- Destiny 2 Shadowkeep's main antagonist has a great deal of lore that I don't want to spoil. The Story and lore of this foe is what I'll be discussing in an ongoing series where we discuss their dark nature.

Speaking of the Sol Divisive, I miss destiny having enemy sub factions like the Dust Giants and the House of Exiles
While I do agree with you, the lack of sub-factions is explained by the lore.
All of the surviving Cabal legions in Sol either got absorbed into the Red Legion when they invaded, or defected to Calus' "loving embrace" aboard the Leviathan.
The Fallen were at an all-time low after the SIVA Crisis, so they decided to ditch their old Houses and join under one new House - The House of Dusk. Curiously, it seems all of the Fallen are splintering into NEW factions; Spider's crew, Eramis' crew, Mithrax and his Guardian friends, the Scorn, etc.
The Vex decided to ditch the whole sub-divisions system (Hezen Corrective, Aphix Invasive, etc), for reasons unknown, probably for the sake of efficiency. The Sol Divisive Vex still look different because they've likely been sitting in the Garden for who-knows-how-long.
I believe the Hive in the Sol System eventually got taken under Savathun's wing after Oryx bit the dust, save for the Hive that were still frozen under Mars, as they followed Nokris and Xol iirc. Not sure if the new hive on the moon have a specific reason to look so different from the rest, probably the same reason that the Hive architecture in the are seems to be getting "corrupted" into the crimson hues of the Scarlet Keep.
TL;DR: I do wish factions were still around, but at least the lore for it mostly makes sense.
fade 396 i like the factions as well I mean we could get nice lore with the dead orbit, Fwc and the new monarchy which I would put my Titan on that faction bc my d1 Titan is a new monarch follower

Note that the artifact given to us by the Darkness is quite reminiscent of the Traveler. It's a sphere; it's light in color; and it has the same circle designs on it in the same relative positions.
As such, I have a feeling that the artifact will reveal more about the Traveler than it will about the Darkness. Whether that knowledge can be trusted or not is entirely a different matter. While we have indisputably been in contact with the Darkness, I still haven't ruled out trickery by Savathûn, especially if she has found a way to commune with the Deep in Oryx's place. The fact that she seems to be in control of the Taken certainly implies as such.
Finally, note the use of the word "artifact". That is the new gear slot we've been given. I think there's a good chance this sphere could eventually become an equipable artifact, just like the Gate Lord's Eye. As such, leveling it up could provide answers to secrets as well as giving us new powers. I admit this last part is pure speculation, but it does tie in with Bungie's vision of "seasons tying together".
I seriously can't wait to find out what this artifact is all about.
samwize1701 i thought it looks like the summoning key from BO3 zombies

I thought the same thing about the traveller the markings are just the same so I'm hoping to get some good traveler lore, after all we spoke with the traveller on the mission for the new sub class yet I couldn't seem to find anyone talking about that. The light says so really crazy things similar to what the darkness says in the new lore book so I hope more comes out on that.
Don't expect anything for the next year bungie has already forgotten about it and will hint at it in about 4 or 5 expansions
The statue that the object is in front of, is in early destiny concept art. The statue is holding up the circular object and there are tetrahedrons in the skyline with a massive greenish black monster in the middle of the image. As soon as I saw THAT statue, I had to go through the concept art to find it. Very interesting indeed.

Something is bugging me about what the darkness said in our vision. "Dont you recognize us?" Like I feel like at some point before we came back and lost our memories we were with the darkness. I mean I could be wrong but what Zavala said that the number one rule is that we shouldn't be digging into our past. We may end up finding something we dont like and may cause us to question everything. Then again we are always questioning everything. Could be wrong though who knows. Still bugs me though.
I think it may be a reference to the Jungian concept of a shadow self. I could be off the mark about that. It does however seem that there is Dark and Light in everything in the Destiny universe, hence why The Exo Stranger told us we must choose a side.
It could be the perfect player, look at the lore for the sparrow "otherside."
like the "darkness" is really the souls of the dead before they were reanimated as guardians?
@@alphaxfrost I think it's like this; the traveler and the light is life, while on the other hand, the darkness is death and decay, and the mirrored version of you or your death, see the sparrow "otherside."

My Ghost had alternate dialogue when i turned the corner to see the Pyramid.
Ghost: "That's one of those Pyramids... it can't be... that should NOT be here. Eris must have gone inside."
Anyone else get this?
I did too! Maybe it has something to do with if you did all the Queens Court stuff
I got it too, I can only assume that if you complete the invitation of the nine from the Season of the Drifter or if you visited Mara Sov because you can see the pyramids on a holographic projection. Those are the only two things I can think of that give us that dialogue.
Yep
I didn't get it and I've done all the queen's court so it must be only if you've done the drifter vision.
What is the regular dialogue?
Almost all the previous and minor positions of the Darkness may all actually have a hint of truth to each of them:
- Pujari claimed that the Darkness is both a physical and moral presence, evil made tangible. We know this has a hint of truth from the Marasenna: when the Darkness made contact with Yang Liwei and the would-be Awoken, that it was distorting space-time around it and the crew felt an overall sense of dread that reached down to the core of their beings.
- Saint-14 argued that the Darkness was an invading armada of aliens. This also has a hint of truth as we know the Darkness or it's primary avatars travel is vast fleet of tetrahedron ships.
- Ulan-Tan suggests that the Darkness is the necessary symmetry to the Traveler as part of a cosmic balance. This has a hint of truth to it as it seems the Traveler seemingly did not fully awaken because it would alert and awaken it's mortal rival. Hence why it did not originally break out of it's cage and sent visions to it's Guardians to regain our light. This also ties with the first unveiling book with gardener (The Traveler) and the winnower (The Darkness) who seemingly were the first beings in all cosmic existence.
- The Monists believe the Darkness is a technologically superior force, to the point of post-singularity, and that the universe is just a simulation. The hint of truth in this is that...the Darkness is a technological superior force and in the first entries of the Unveiling book we learn that along with the Traveler is able to create and simulate new cosmos. We also know the Vex protecting the Black Garden (and the Vex in general) have the power to simulate entire timelines.
- The Acataleptic Clause, and the Praxic Warlocks, believe that not only is the Darkness unknowable, but that people shouldn't bother trying to understand it and instead simply fight it. While dismissive, this does highlight the fact that Darkness is unlike anything we've encountered before, as we've seen with it's power to create and recreate powerful Nightmares of our past without fail. It's motivation to reduce the cosmos down to a singular and majestic is also quite alien to humanity. It is our enemy that doesn't wish for diplomacy, but to be the end of things. Thus it must be fought.
The only one I am unsure of currently is this:
- A heretical position from the Binary Star Cult states that the Traveler itself triggered the collapse, and used humanity as a sacrifice/proxy army in its war against the Darkness. This may be true or some truth to it, but seems very unlikely given the testaments in the dreams of Alpha Lupi cards.
The thing about the star cult's claim is that if the Traveller really wanted an army, it could have used the Eliskni instead. The fallen seem like a far better choice for an army than humanity. We know that the fallen we see now are not the normal size of the fallen, and that pre whirlwind fallen looked a lot more like their priests. Their tech skills are also superior to us because even jury-rigged fallen tech was able to compete with a warmind, one of the pinnacles of pre-collapse humanity tech.

@@twiexcursori Yes, I reread it. The first part is I believe him getting killed by the Nightmare of Ghaul right after when Eris wakes up the Pyramid. The second part is their perspective for when the Traveller finally woke up during the end of the Red War.
the black garden played host the the darkness?? i missed it, was it a good concert.
Yeah it was pretty sick, Xur turned up with some Glass Needles,Taeko brought some Void Crystals and Ir Ânuk had a duet with Shaxx good times....
I wonder if Bungie writers ever listen to Byf's headcannon and say "ooh, that's a good idea!"
I finally cracked it, came back to this video for the big reveal. The darkness is actually incompetence, and the veil are a race of individuals known as "blueberries", who seek only to prevent public events from becoming heroic, and will always charge headfirst when last guardian standing.
Just wanted to make a friendly thought, it doesn't mean anything, just something interesting the think about.
I find it interesting how the shape of the darkness (or darkness ships) is an actual naturally occurring shape.
There are many precious stones that will naturally form in a pyramid shaped structure.
But a perfect circle (like the traveler) is unnatural.
A perfect circle has to be man made. Sure many things will have a circular shape, but never a perfectly smooth circle.
So it's interesting to me, how the darkness can be seen as natural, a natural way of life, where the traveler is unnatural, or an intelligent evolution forward into the unnatural.
I like how the nightmares share the same visual effect the black heart dose.
Both are extremely close to pure forces of darkness it seems
I just realized that the big vex brought to life by the Heart are basically nightmares at that point
Tetrahedron boys
im beginning to thik Bungie listen to Byf then makes the story around his ideas....note that would be a great thing btw
Darkness: Guardian
Guardian: You know me?
Darkness: I do. You’re not the only one cursed with knowledge.
Here is a small theory that I've been sitting on for a while. I never believed that the Traveller was the source of the entirety of the Light, especially because the Darkness has so many 'Ships' for itself, perhaps the Traveller is one of the last of the Lights ships, the Darkness might just have the overwhelming force. My point is that the Traveller and the Antagonist Ships are vessels of the Light and Darkness, perhaps the Dark Ships are like the Traveller but for the Lights enemy. This has a terrifying consequence if true because the Lights Vessel, the Traveller, made Ghosts which could revive the ancient dead, if the Dark Ships act the same then perhaps there will be an actual 'evil Guardian' to fight, something that if we push too hard against the Darkness the Anti-Guardians rise to strike at us like how we struck the Darkness. This is just something I've been thinking of because I feel like it makes sense, there are always two sides of the story after all.
EnderGirlGaming i mean the pyramid on the moon recreated the dead with the nightmares
Maybe the traveller is a giant ghost
I'm just throwing an idea for development in all honesty, the Nightmares is kinda what gave me the final piece for this theory but I forgot to mention it. I also doubt it's a Giant Ghost because Ghosts obviously talk, they are companions to Guardians, unless there is a Giant Guardian of some kind in the Universe I doubt it's a Giant Ghost.
Maybe the traveller is the last of its kind and the rest of them got consumed by the darkness?
@@ceratus That is actually a really good theory, it would explain why the Traveller is so out numbered. I think I mentioned it in my original comment as the Darkness 'Ships' could be like the Lights 'Ships' which is the Traveller. I feel like what is going to come soon is the greatest assault in Destiny history where we do end up pushing back the Darkness, but at the same time the Darkness creates its own 'Guardians' to fight us like how we fought in Destiny 1.

What if Destinys story is similar to that of Babylon 5 and that the"Darkness" and The"Traveler" are just two very powerful entity's that happen to disagree on an ideology and so they began to start rumors about the other entity/species and the traveler just happened to defeat the darkness and beat it back . But here is an even CRAZIER theory (emphasis on theory)....what if ......what...if the Darkness and the Traveler are just two siblings of a very powerful and dangerous species and the Nine are just their retarded cousins .lmao anyways those are just two if my theories that are more *exotic* .but wouldn't it be crazy if destiny was just that? we know that the nine have been in sol since it's creation, sorry to rain on your parade.
The Great Muffin Train I like the retarded cousin compared part... esp after they let the red legion invade us just to see the traveler trapped.
What about Bane? Bruce Wayne merely adopted the Darkness but Bane was born into it...
The first thing I thought when I entered the pyramid was “this thing can take or create any form it wants and can also jack Ghosts; I think this is an enemy we can’t simply shoot to death.”
We'd have to bank some friggin' motes first
Imagine if the ships merely contain the travelers former “worthy” disciples. Escorted about by the darkness. To prove our worth we must defeat them, only to then travel about and protect our “worthiness” from new usurpers uplifted by the traveler.
I have a theory. I think the pyramid ships are in some way the same as the traveler, like a kind of giant machine which has powers like the traveler, but opposite.
Another theory: there are lots of pyramids and only one traveler, but I believe that there are more "travelers", so if we had to fight the darkness, we would be kind of "helped" in the fight.
I KNOW it's a theory, and therefore can be wrong, so please don't roast me. Thank you.

My space cowboy hunter now has his equal also what tf happened to uldren sov and when are us hunters getting a new vanguard seriously I feel that they open these badass stories and never finish them like wtf happened to the darkness in d1 and the stranger and what happens to uldren sov also what happened to shin and dredgen or what happened to the new hunter vanguard
Jax they already explained the darkness was removed from the game the same way it was in d1, the stranger isn’t coming back her story is complete, they already explained what happened to Shin and the Dredgen byf made a video on it, and we don’t have a new hunter vanguard so nothing happened to them??
There's plenty of lore explain what happened to dredgen yorr, shin malfur and what's going on with drifter. Byf has made a few videos on all that. The on shin/jaren/dredgen is a favorite of mine. As for the vanguard, to quote zavala 'we will not be taking applications for the hunter vanguard, the dare still stands'. He wasn't willing to send troops to the shore but he does understand that the dare was something important to cayde and still is to most if not all hunters, just as protecting the city is to him and his titans. What that means exactly we don't know yet, but its doubtful the vanguard will be uldren, i imagine mara has claimed him for the Awoken and for his own safety. But we'll find out, bungie did say they'll continue the uldren story but the shadowkeep story is the current focus for the coming seasons
ErR0r 5AnS cayde was the old hunter vanguard. Cayde died. We need a new hunter vanguard. They’re literally part of the city’s government
ARIDIAN KNIGHT he said what happened to the NEW hunter vanguard but it was nothing cause we don’t have one yet
@@aridianknight3576 yes but they aren't elected democratically. Technically we need a new speaker too as he was the only 'neutral' party between the vanguard and the factions. That's why the city is in an odd spot right now since zavala and ikora were also considering stepping down or at least removing the vanguard from politics. (i think this was in the lore tab on oxeygen sr3)
For the "Unveiling"'s cover, anyone notice the circles representing Sol's system and the conflux of all points meet at the dot that would represent Mars? Looks like we'll be dealing with The Black Garden for awhile...
Perfect bedtime story
my question then is how does calus fit into the darkness' plan? He stared at it and it stared back. Did he not also have a conversation with the darkness? We only know of the physical form of calus as the giant robot correct? I understand that he "was" cabal, but is he still?
Half of the video be like: "This is just a theory, so don't take it too gospel like"
I wonder if Byf's character is looking forward to the next expansion pack? Apparently, the darkness sends Ramsay Bolton to cut his fun bits off :P
So the darkness is like the angel in the episode of neon genesis Evangelion called”The sickness unto death and” splitting of the breast eps16....this seems to be the case with the darkness or not lol
I think the reason the Darkness is formless is because of its focus on survival. The Darkness is the ultimate expression of the need to adapt: a formless being who adopts any form fit to its purpose then discards it when its needs change.
This is why Guardians are anethema to the Darkness: they are forms which have proven insufficient by dying, but instead of being discarded they are brought back again and again.
This is also what ties all our enemies to the Darkness. Each one wants to harness it and use its power to become something new, better, and more fit to survive. The Hive seek the Final Shape, the Vex wish to become an axiomatic aspect of reality, the Fallen *need* to change to survive as a species, and the Cabal assimilate the species they conquer to become the ultimate military force.
Dominus Gaul is an interesting case because he attempted to adopt the Light while being driven by the logic of the Darkness. He saw that the Light was victorious, therefore he must assimilate it to change and become stronger. He argues that he deserves the Light *because* he is stronger. No wonder he was refused.
YES IVE BEEN WAITING, THANK YOU LORE DADDY ::::3
awesome video! just food for thought, but if the traveler and the pyramid ship are parallels to each other. why is there only one traveler when the pyramid ships can be seen in multiples (not positive it shows multiple pyramid ships anywhere besides the end of shadow keeps campaign, which is supposedly a vision. just find it odd lol).
The real enemy is the man in the wall. Destiny is a prequel to warframe, eris morn is the Lotus!!!
I haven't seen anyone mention it yet and I'm legitimately curious, but doesn't the plateau that's shown in the background of the cutscenes in the black garden look very similar to the place that the Traveler touched down on Io? I don't know what it would mean lore wise, but it immediately caught my eye.
You know, I’ve always had a problem with the name “bomb logic”. I get the idea behind the name but it seems like such a wasted opportunity. Especially considering that “gun logic” would be a far more thematic name as well as getting the same ideas across as “bomb logic”.
Shield logic?
Ross Penney The whole idea behind bomb logic is that its many weak parts working together to be stronger than the sword. A shield is realistically only one part.
Yea, but you can stab a guy with a gun, what're you gonna do against a bomb? Stab it? Good luck.
I think the issue with something like "gun logic" as a term is that it implies it only needs an individual to wield it and as such isn't much different than Sword Logic (it would very much apply to Dredgens though). On the other hand "bomb logic" carries with it the idea it takes a whole group for it to succeed since the stronger the bomb the larger the group.
MonsieurAuContraire It takes just as many people to make a gun. As for “wielding it”, it only takes one person to prime and trigger a bomb. They’re the same.
I think your theory makes a lot of sense is in the context of nightmares, it's the same way light doesn't go and punch some hive but rather has guardians the deep doesn't just shoot us or punch us in the face, it needs nightmares, which are not original creations the same way we are not. I think the only true way to beat to darkness or the light is simply to ignore them and have all others do the same.

This is gonna be good
Honestly if later on down the line if we are able to choose to be born of darkness or light, i would love that. The darkness has a very asmodeus (dnd variant) style personality, it is polite, yet has much more grander plans for domination.
Yeah if we ever get a choice between the darkness or the traveler. I'm definitely picking darkness. #travelerisevil
In the original story the traveler is evil
@@Ratchet0401 I still think the speaker faked his death.
@@hexmachine8263 it would be really cool if we had seen the speaker cutscene of Shadowkeep and not us. Okay its still cool but if the speaker was there it would be cooler. Btw sorry for bad english iam german
Would be better if we master both and become the neutral god of balance or a Demi-god balance group to keep both powers in check
@@lukasbjornendermann9944 eew I like that!
Okay, spoilerish because it's something to do with the content of the video.
May we discuss that the artifact we recover in the pyramid has the uncanny resemblance to the traveler. Not just that it's a sphere, but the lines on it as well. It is the same lines that are on the traveler. What's that about?
There is also the weekly thing of Eirs' fireteam
I feel like Bungie was waiting for your video to come out, with theories, so they could get some notes on where they should go next with the story.
"A less than unimpeachable account in terms of voracity"
Oh Byf... I don't know what that means... just use regular English please
Translation: take it with a grain of salt
@@GuyFromJupiter that's much better
End of destiny all dead characters eg cayde Mara speaker etc all are going to come back and fight the dark pyramids in the last city st-14 is going to headbut everything
Is it just me or does the visual effects for darkness power look like the psionic energies we saw on the Leviathan raids? Like that shiny wavy pattern. As formless as mist.
Hey Byf the Video is great but the music was too loud i couldnt concentrate on what you where saying, thought id say that for the next video maybe
What if I... spoiled Shadowkeep?
Hahahaa just kidding... unless..?
The only way to defeat this level of power that is that Darkness, is to trap it and I'm willing to bet Osiris will play a big part in sealing the darkness AND the vex in a time and space where nothing exists because in this time they are trapped in is the end of the universe where no life or light exists. With the power of time manipulation, we can trap them in a loop to forever be bound to the end of the universe. In order to do so, we'll need to go back to the very 1st time line and defeat the very 1st Darkness so that the rest of the time lines will no longer have darkness.
I feel like at the end of this whole thing. We're going to have to choose between light and dark.
This is scary, and it's so cool as a new destiny player that I'm getting to see this plot evolve in real time (tho it will probably take some years)
