I was on long distance truck driving in the UK. Did my job and devlievered to all the factories that I had to and saw many towns up north of England, but it was lonesome sometimes. Stayed in some dives, once with 30 guys all snoring, never got a wink of sleep. One night I had a room to my own and a TV. Turned it on and watched The Andy Williams Show. Wow, did it cheer me up. I laughed, I cried and I felt part of the human race. Thanks Andy.

It was so much fun in my living room when Ella Fitzgerald was singing on any show...but especially wonderful when it was on The Andy Williams Show. My Dad would immediately go into "Scat" mode, which would continue long after...way long after the song was over. Then the "Scat" would morph into audible air saxaphone & trombone. The windows were shaking. The best of times!

This was true. Andy is a still a nice guy well respected in the industry. When it came to Ella Andy, Dinah, Dean, Sinatra etc loved having her as a guest. I miss the days that she was a regular on TV even in the 70s when i was small. The Boston Pops is what sold me! The first time i saw her was in 1973. Love her style ...love this medley too.

They are both American icons and royalty as far as I’m concerned. There will never be the likes of this generation of entertainers and artists in their own individual right again!!!
They were both there to entertain your ass’s off with class and dignity and genuine talent without the me me me crap and garbage music of today and just give you your moneys worth!!!!
They just made you feel good!!

Their voices were meant for each other. I wish they'd done an album together. Ella always looked like she was truly enjoying herself when she was with Andy. I have read somewhere that the Andy Williams show was rehearsed heavily and THAT is why everything went so well on it. I think that is why the guests seemed so happy performing on it, with or without Andy. Andy had so many great duets, but the Ella duets are my favorites.

It was a honour to be on Andy Williams Show, it was a place where music from all over the world have been performed, to fill the soul with infinity of sounds!
What a lovely performance =) Great job Tatane73, you posted some really qualitative videos to contribute to all of us!

Thanks to people like you, Tatane, there are many great Andy Williams duets here on youtube, one better than the other, but this one defies any comment. From 2:24 on, their exchange, their trading fours, is incredible. Ella takes the lead, her drive is a killer, but Andy stands his ground. Listen to the call and response between the reed and brass sections of great jazz bands like Ellington's, Basie's or Lunceford's and you see the greatness of this duet. The arranger has to be given credit, too. *W O W*

This ranks among the very best recordings Ella has ever made. P.S. At 2:30 Andy misses his cue, but he manages to bring it home nonetheless, with the incarnation of jazz and swing really gearing up at his side.

When I read your comment and thought about it for a bit you are defintely right. Singers today don't sing that with joy that they have done in the past. That's one of the reasons why I much prefer yesterday's singers. They were REAL singers who treated singing as an art and not just a money making career. Singing seemed to be a passion for them unlike today. Ella Fitzgerald loved singing and you can see that in every performance that she gave. btw, I love this duet!

Of course they read props. It was a TV show, why wouldn't they? It was already a memory challenge, and just for a one-off show, which he did each week with new material. Do you think the band musicians were playing by memory?

I've always thought Andy Williams was unjustly dismissed as a singer-Sure he had plenty of regrettable "Pop" hits in the late 60's-but when singing a worthy song, nobody had his TONE.
