- The beautiful gloss black bonnet of my Rover P6 used to look stunning but was ruined by being parked under trees for months when a garage had it, and every time its machine polished the marks come back, so now Ive got to bite the bullet and get more extreme and wet sand the paint...gulp...

Little tip for you. Once you have cut the surface to a nice shine, wipe it over with some panel wipe - the degreaser stuff you use before painting a panel. If it stays shiny after you wipe the panel wipe off, it's a very good sign that the panel will stay shiny - rather than going dull or hazy again after a few weeks. Because the panel wipe removes the polish, it will basically tell you if it's the paint that is shiny, or just the polish making it look shiny.

@@furiousdriving Well yes you can basically see what you are getting by pouring clean water on it [ no need to waste panel wipe ] after you flatted it and looking at the reflections from numerous angles , dark colours like black show every imperfection , and so polishing takes more effort has to be well done and consistent , you were happy but I saw what I call Hazy , so more fine polish to remove abrasion marks .
Still you were very brave if you never did that before .
A lot of hard work went into this one and it shows. That bonnet looks great. Rotting leaves and tree sap are a sod to remove so taking the paint back is possibly the only solution for the consumer. I hope it looks great the following day. Top job Matt and thanks for sharing.
look amazing, hope it stays that way for you matt! WIP update - the eunos roadster has a MOT! After the short failure list i sorted the low hanging stuff and then gave it back to them for the rear brake pipe (across the car), glad i did as a simple swap took them forever on the ramp. They then decided to fail it on the fog light (had been rewired previously as the 3rd brake light) i read up on MOT rules over the weekend and successfully argued that it was ok, they reluctantly agreed! It's therefore now on the road and the kids love it! The Mrs isn't so convinced.. There are still things to do, passenger wing and door to replace in BRG, but will keep an eye out for these parts and drive it in the mean time. Small service kit has arrived oil/filter/sparks - I will get the kids involved to do it. Hurrah!

Just done something similar on my headlights...it is terrifying but hopefully the lights are clearer, enough for the MOT.
Did something similar with my old Mini - don’t rub too hard, and it’ll come up fine with some cutting compound and a buff. End result looks great!
I think you were too timid. Would have used 2000 or maybe even 1500 and a rubber block with a small degree of flex as this is gentler and more effective - a rigid wooden block will tend to give concentrated point contact and the panel isn't flat. Before using finer cutting compounds you generally need a fairly uniform matte finish, it looked like you didn't even deglaze the surface entirely with the wet sand. You didn't mention if you clay-barred it first which is absolutely the first thing you should do - obviously the surface contaminants will happily add themselves to your abrasive mix and add new scratches. Did my awful paint with 1500, you just need to rinse it constantly so you can see when to stop this is good practice anyway as it tends to minimize scratches. Certainly I didn't need any great effort to remove what I added with the 1500. A strong LED lamp helps also as a directional source rather than defused sunlight.

Gives me a flashback to valeting new cars in the eighties. Brown BL paint was horrible. You could polish it up indoors and it would still be smeary and have a "glaze" to it when tou took it outside! Grr.
I feel your pain and anxiety Matt, deliberately installing scratches by sanding the paintwork of your pride and joy, seems so wrong, and a very scary prospect, even though it’s for the greater good.
The bonnet looked infinitely better at the end of the video, great content as always❤.
The reflective number plates are a good safety feature of cars its more difficult for a vehicle to blend into the background and they make a car look more bright and cheerful 😊
Lets all be honest now, if you're driving a classic you're probably going to break down. You may as well break down with something nice, pretty and shiny to look at!

Well anyone passing is far more likely to assume at least your trying if a car looks nice.
Different paint requires different tactics. I wet sanded a patch on my door after filling some scratches. I started with 1000 grit and a line board as in what pdr people use. That way i could get it rea!ky flat. Then I went straigbt to 2000 grit then G3 on a wool pad, towling it off to inspect every step. After the G3 i had a nice shine without having to add any products.
Try getting some 3m trizac 3000 then go over with 8000 and get a good cut compound g360 or roar 610 and a tougher polishing pad or microfibre and and it will make a vast difference to that
Know that feeling of why did I start this project all too well.
The little bit I have done, I've put a little soap in the water. Sandpaper doesn't clog and it feels nicer. As an American, I have a three car garage would could fit four cars parking like your cars. I would be surprised if your house cost less than mine.
Comparing south east England near London prices to most of the US (outside NYC or LA) I could have an acre and a barn for the price of a regular house here, its become ridiculous now
Australia not so cheap anymore. Outside the major cities better but still getting expensive. Seems like half population of UK now living in France as property is SO cheap.

Use a bit of Fairy Liquid in water for lubrication and only a straight motion .These days discs are quicker, and did it really need flatting to start with
Use 3M green,yellow and blue stage polish I guarantee you will get a much better result!

The bonnet of the Mondeo is the same/worse. Similar story but complicated by two stage paint (metallic base plus lacquer), and a very thin lacquer coat (thanks Ford).
I’ve given up trying to improve it, as the sap from the bushes has wrecked the top surface - plus the whole car will need painting at some stage…

me too, time will tell. I guess with the Mondeo new paint will be the only way to really fix it
try 3m fast cut, it's a pro compound and the best. the green top is what I use. works on faded and yellowedf plastic light lenses too. watch the edges of the bonnet and anywhere there are folds in the metal as the paint will be thinner and you may burn through with a mop.
Burning through is what I’m always worried about doing this sort of thing. Kent Paints will have some of that I’m sure

I use colour magic on my sometimes pink cinquecento, abit like putting makeup on a pig but wears off after several weeks 😭 i must be near the primer at this stage but ill keep going for now. My car lives outside so it's got lots to put up with, seagulls shit like elephants these days so i power wash it before anything else, nasty stuff, bird shite 😢

Washing up liquid!?!?!?! Car shampoo works far better as a lubricant and paper cleaner, plus you don't run the risk of some nasty chemicals in the washing up liquid making the paint go cloudy and look as if it been washed with washing powder
It looks really good. Did you say anything to the garage?.. I took my mx 5 to a " specialist " for a service, and they forgot to tighten the oil cap

less to lose if it goes wrong, more to gain if it goes well? Get some G7 and G3 that are less than a decade old and it'll be easier

Honestly, it doesn't surprise me at all. So many "professional" places fall short.
Your polishing technique is all wrong im afraid. You are going far to fast and seem to randomly go all over the place. You must move in slow even passes. Left to right, then up and down. Doing 20 to 30" patch at a time. I had a bonnet that was bad last year that i worked on and spend 5hrs on just the bonnet alone. From corse, medium, to final Refining polish.
After the wet sand.
You should just hit it with G3 compound and plain water with the mop.
The wash and wax you put on has fillers in so fills in minor scratches. This won’t last as the fillers come out.
After the G3 go down to a 3M untra fina.
Then you can go over with a decent wax and job done.
That diamond brite stuff is full of fillers so doesn’t last.
I had a black car once...never again. It was an absolute B****** to get clean and even harder to keep clean, never mind getting a high polished gloss on it! I admire your ambition...off to wrestle with the tree sap-riddled adriatic blue paint of my range rover....
Surely you should use a foam block not wood ? The wood block will be flat , non of the bonnet will be perfectly flat , so it will just rub on the very centre of the block?
Yeah or do it with no block at all and just your hand
@@Lobo-ih3bh You want some sort of block because the pressure you apply won't be even i.e. with your finger tips but it should be flexible i.e. rubber or foam.

Gutting when you spend so much time on it and still there are numerous imperfections. I'm the same - can't help focussing on them but they do tend to be forgotten over time! I recently spent several days repairing, filling, sanding, filling, sanding, filling sanding, priming, painting, lacquering my Beetle rear wing and quarter panel, only to then do some wet sanding too late in the evening when i couldn't see well enough, and went through to the basecoat and even primer in one place 😩. It's staying like it 😆
I'd still rather work on single stage lacquer than base coat/clear coat....I really cannot fathom how the re-finishers do that...
You did a great job Matt, as others have said black paint is very difficult to polish and easy to get holograms on.
I’m no expert but when you started sanding you said it had black on the sanding block. Shouldn’t it have been clear (whitish)? That means there is no clear coat on the paint.
This would explain a lot about the etching. Clear coat protects from etching in the black paint.

I love your videos, particularly fixing stuff. It's clear that you don't enjoy doing this and I suspect that you might not be giving that car the love it needs in terms of its paintwork. It's a lovely car and deserves a high level of attention. Perhaps a professional detail would be the answer.
It actually looked more like tree sap and snail trails. I’d have tested it with a citrus spray,let dwell for a couple of minutes then spray snow foam over the top ( I use Bilt Hamber touchless with auto finesse citrus) a lot less hassle if it worked that’s for sure. Another item I’ve used for tree sap is Turtle Wax tar and glue remover and it works a treat. Back to smooth paint in no time
You need to invest in a decent DA polisher. The one you have looks cheap and nasty. Also try clay bar before you use any compound. Get a decent clay bar and some lube.

You have nerves of steel. That first rub with the wet sand must have felt awful. Great result though, but I bet you will revisit this task!

It was a lot of hard work but it paid off in the end - that bonnet looks really great now.

Hi I used to do that for a living, black is the worst colour to mop polish. I used to hate doing black cars. You may have had more success with a better compound.

Once you have finished playing with your paintwork Matt you might like to have a look at the NS headlamps earthing point it's a bit dim.

Exactly this. The trail is caused by the "tooth" in the slug's mouth that scrapes across the ground, lifting off whatever it is that slugs seem to eat.
Not the way this one would have tackled the job, but looks perfectly decent.

Is clay bar still a thing these days? I remember using it, and to start with you can feel it drag over the paintwork, then when you have all the dirt out of the scratches, it is smooth as silk.

Sadly, that rover sounds pretty sick when you start it up; the rattles sound like loose ancillaries, and it should sound like a lovely smooth V8. Do you know what’s wrong with it? I always want to pop the bonnet and tighten down whatever’s spoiling the pleasure. Yeah, wet sanding is painful, but with patience can yield amazing results.
The doors rattle mic was inside and the alternator bearing is squeaking

What's wrong with the headlights? When you started it up it was on full beams but the passenger side full beam was dim. I've noticed this before in other videos.
