Dad ‘Numb’ Over Discovery of Missing Teen’s Car 21 Years Later

- It was incomprehensible for Cecil Foster to see his daughter’s car unearthed after 21 years. “It kind of seems like a dream,” he told Inside Edition Digital’s Leigh Scheps. Erin Foster, 18, and her friend, 17-year-old Jeremy Bechtel, disappeared in Sparta, Tennessee, in 2000. Then last week, scuba diver Jeremy Sides found her car underwater. Remains were also found in the car. “There's a sense of relief there but it still hurts there too, but I don't know if it'll ever go away,” Foster said.

I’m glad that he and his family have some degree of closure now, but once the numbness wears off, this father may have a new kind of grief. I pray he finds peace.

I feel like having your child go missing is almost worse than losing them because you have to live in a constant state of terror of not knowing if there's more you can do to find them or if you should just move on and mourn.
This father went on for 21 years thinking non-stop about his missing daughter, is she alive? If so, was she kidnapped? Is she being exploited?
Or did she just ran off and living her life peacefully?

It’s insane how the detectives couldn’t simply check the bodies of water around their house like the average ones would, it’s always a common place to check. Couldve saved this man 21 years of not knowing. I’m so sorry, may they Rest In Peace.
Water conditions change a the time. So it makes it really hard to find stuff like that. Plus safety issues, does not make sense for somebody else to die when your just looking for an object or dead body. Id be another needless death.
there actually should have been obvious proof a car went over the edge into the water. At the time, at least. Many times these departments lack the manpower to do truly thorough investigations.
They searched the area where they thought they had gone to which was on the other side of town. At the time they had nothing to tell them to search there. I believe it was based on where the party they had been at was, if you watch the search video it gives more information about that. Also some towns just do not have the resources to search. Another dive team that Jeremy works with, Adventures with Purpose, solved a 7 year old missing case where the pond in question had been searched with sonar and dived on but they didn't find the car. 7 years later AWP comes in with improved sonar equipment and found him.
I'm no expert but US police departments seem very fragmented with town police, county sheriff's, state highway patrols etc, perhaps this makes it harder to pool resources than having a single force with resources like state based divers who can go where needed?
Don't ya know, Cops don't fight or solve crimes , then just pull you over to feed the system.
This is the most heartbreaking moment for the father. For all the years, he's hoping to find his missing daughter. But sadly, it shattered when they found the missing car with her body. But atleast, he gets some closure on what actually happened to his daughter and he can finally bury her properly. May she rest in peace. I'm sure her father will see her from the afterlife someday.
At least they finally got some answers

Poor man. I know exactly how he must be feeling losing his baby girl like this and don’t finding out what happened to her for so long. Such a tragedy that two young lives ended up like this. I hope their parents and family can find some closure and some peace.
Seemed so senseless for two young people to die in the manner they did! What in hell could have happened to cause that car to vault either over or through a guardrail and into a river like that? The car looked very intact so now I'm wondering if there was ever a guardrail there?
He had more years without her than he did with her. He at least now has something to bury it's not a question anymore.

If we have more scuba divers, trail hikers and wilderness explorers, both professional and recreational, I have no doubt we'd be solving and uncovering more missing person cases.
Best to know what happened to your loved ones than be on your death bed wondering if they're alive or not.
It does seem like everyone, police included, got it in their heads that they'd run off on some crazy adventure. If only they'd looked harder right in their own backyard.
Yes, they found a car after 46 years, a girl and her friend. They went to a party, and the boys there were accused of killing them. Their lives were tainted with all the accusations and being labeled killers. They had no proof. The girls drove off the bridge and into the river on the way home. All their personal belonging were found in tact. Their parents never knew the truth, they died. Recent family members were grateful and glad that they knew what happened to their relatives.

Down here in Florida that's a very common occurrence, especially with all the canals and other waterways we have down here.
Sometimes they don't only run off the road and go missing underwater. Sometimes they run off the road into the bushes, die and declared missing.
I remember in November 1996, workers were clearing out the bushes alongside Interstate 95 in Port St. Lucie, and found a car with the remains of an Opa Locka man who was reported missing on January 2, 1996. He was returning from a December 1995 visit to his sister in Cincinnati and never made it home. Wrapped Christmas gifts were still on the backseat. No one knew what caused the accident, but he wasn't wearing his seat belt. His head was on the seat next to his body.
So sad.
@@Autumn-Rain yep, it was particularly rough on the son who made many trips back and forth passing the spot, looking for his father, and didn't know the car was in the bushes. The same way how the man in this video was practically fishing on top of his daughter's car the whole time she was missing.

*I grew up around a lot of marshland and was told early that if I ever end up submerged don’t panic, and first remove my seatbelt, then try to roll the windows down to escape (if electric and shorted out, unlatch the door and steadily try to force it open to allow some water in to equalize the strong pressure of the water that is pushing in on the doors from the outside, and when enough water enters inside the cab the water pressure will finally begin to equalize and the door should get easier to open up allowing for escape). I know though that this is a lot easier said than done when in a dark and disorienting, panic inducing situation.*
