I love this as well! My issue was just not being able to gain a process or direction with making a character. I started with the idea of an ancient firbolg mother figure but I knew I didn't want to go cleric because that was expected so I went Barbarian to show a mother's desire to protect her young which, I'll be honest, was a great start. It fell apart after that haha. Like you mention with Rage, I made mine too situational. I knew there were combats where I should've raged, but I didn't because at that point in the journey, I was there to protect being the tank AND the mom, but I wasn't passionate enough to protect them from anything because they could protect themselves and I was just there to take the most of it
Well as a person who loves divine soul sorcerer, and in general sorcerer, all my characters are unique individuals who happen to be vary similiar at the mechanical level so: 1. A young teifling girl, raised by her mother and occassionally visted by her father. Follows her mother around, freeing her from jail, and is more a less a familiar to her mom in every sense of the word. One day frees her mother from jail, and they plan to meet up back at the safe house after her mother leaves her to do 1 more thing. Her mother never shows and she's out to look for her. Turns out her mother is attempting to bring her father(a fiend lord of the nine hells) back on earth. Sidenote: Her mother is a warlock of her father, and this character is either part of her mother's pact, or the reason for it. Levistus Teifling, Divine Soul Sorcerer, Outlander background 2. Half- Elf girl, raised in the chruch of her parnets, her father a celestial warlock, and her mother a paladin, of the same god of their church,. Is looking for a place in the church, and goes on her religous spirtual mission hoping to figure this out. She beilves she's a life cleric/celestial warlock gestial. She's a divine soul sorcerer with the warlock magic initiate feat, and Acotyle background. 3. Studious young man. whose in love with books, and wants to have every book and solve every known mystery in the world. Discovers he has dragon scales all on him, and can do magic. To find answers to this he must venture beyond his world of books to find out why this is happening to him. Draconic Bloodline Sorcerer, Elemental Adept Feat, Sage Background, Human. 4. Noble woman, very much is into her own self. Her family has close connections to her nations church, and her family is desdandant from the god of her religon. She has constantly grown up with everyone around singing her family prasies, untill one day she began casting holy magic. Soon everyone around her, was singing her praises and beilves she's her gods chosen, and her gods gift to the world. Aasimar, Divine Soul Sorcerer, Noble or Acylote Background 5. Rich teifling girl, is on the run from her human family. They want her back for some reason. Though it doesn't make sense as even before she look like this, she was always mistreated by them, at least emotional. However when she started to change, she met them. Her fiendish family(grandpa and mom), and they loved her. Told her of her great inhertatince that she was starting to come into. Now to get it, she must keep her signet ruby ring, a sign that she's her grandpa's chosen, and must explore the world. To be free and happy, but honestly she's just lost, and just going where her grandpa and mom tell her to. Luckily she has her loyal familar, Vesper by her side. Divine Soul Sorcerer, Teifling, Magic Iniate Wizard, Noble Background Currently playing 5. Never played 3 or 4. Yes they are all the same class mechanically and 4 are the same subclass class. But they all have different feelings to them. And different stories/motivations. Trust me 1 vs 2 felt just as different as 1 vs 5.
I'll say with this whole thing. I tend to start with mechanics because I feel the question of "What kind of Person Becomes a (insert class here)". Why did my eventual eldritch knight that was a servant to a powerful wizard decide to become a Fighter instead of following in their master's footsteps and become a wizard? What kind of person is your barbarian? If their power doesn't come directly from some primal rage, where does it come from? and do they appreciate the power it gives them? What kind of person dedicates themselves so thoroughly to the power of music/performance/emotion that they gain bardic magic? What kind of desperate situation does someone have to be in to sign their soul over to a patron? and how did your warlock FIND their patron? Especially when the magic system is as hard and specific as D&D's Vancian System, with specific spells and specific limits on how you use them and specific components, the specific knowledge of how you do what you do and why becomes important.
Even ADventurer League (the official WotC approved organized campaign that plays 100% by the Book RAW. allows for this since the beginning. I remember when we only had the PhB and people wanted to play a demon ancestry sorcerer, I would tell them, to pick dragon bloodline, choose the fire elemental type. Now chance all appearance of the word Dragon by demon (since it's adventurer League, the exception here would be dragon sorcerer learn Dragoninc, and by Adventurer League rule they must continue to learn dragonic, but this once is easy enough to switch by taking demonic as a background language. The other thing that couldn'T be changed is the bonus on Charisma base ability check with dragon, where because we cannot change any mechanic is still a bonus with dragon) but everything else: dragon scale giving you 13+dex AC become demon leather skin giving you 13+dex AC dragon ancestry became demonic ancestry dragon wing, became demonic wing that gives the same flight speed at level 14. Dragoninc presence become Demonic presence Critical role season 1 was super popular, so obviously you have many Percy wannabe copy cat (no sorry it's wasn't a copycat it was a totally original character elf, from a rich family living at Thornwood mansion who contracted a demon to have a powerful gun and would tinker his guns....) Anyway I had many request to help build a gunner class for adventurer league Well the "gunner" class is a adventurer league legal character that appears in the PhB: you take fighter reach level 3 and your subclass is battlemaster. Now you strike "battlemaster" and write down "gunner" now instead of disarming maneuver, you choose "aim shot : hand" voila a gunner class. Mechanically you simply reskin a bow (or crossbow) into a gun Roleplay-wise, you gain the tinker ability, during a short rest (as part of the attunement process or even the identification process) you tinker the bow and transform it into a repeating gun able to shoot multiple bullet. The same ability allows you to transform a musket, that require 6 second to reload (reload/ammunition property) You can also melt arrow to craft bullet for your repeting gun, and melt crossbow bolt for your musket. and the wooden shaft of the arrow/bolt is used to make your gun powder. voila a adventurer league legal gunner with guns and bullet and gunpowder. Yes today they actually included real gun and real gun powder and a real feat for gunner, so redoign this reskin might get confusing. But when only the PhB was releases it was perfectly fine.
my paladin gained his power from an oath of conquest on the injustices of the world, he is a revolutionary fighter intent on overthrowing the status quo, his power comes from his oath to his ideology and revolutionary army
My brother in law wanted his Barbarian's rage to be flavored as him turning into a super saiyan. He had a ton of fun with it lol
It took me playing/creating about 7 characters to have this thought, so I fully agree it's worth trying
Gonna start saying "some of that good-good" from now on.
It's weird getting suggested a video with less than 300 views, but I'm glad the algorithm found me this!
Hey, me too!
@@Feltheleb You also watched the Bard issue for XP to Lvl 3 which brought you here? Sames dude. Prompted by JoCat's Looter's shout-out

I have a Barbarian Warlock multiclass in which the DM and I flavored the Rage as my patron taking control of my body.
That's cool! I'm planning to run a barbarian warlock soon too. I'm going Hexblade Berserker.
I 100% agree! DMs who insist you rigidly adhere to the flavor of the class in the books just stifle creativity.
As long as I have a interesting and fun character I’m good

"Cast 'Sad' as a bonus action" 🤣🤣🤣
"Cast 'F' in chat, please"
I always try to make a character and then figure out what classes and stats the character would have later.
