I definitely have the wrong cameras: I apparently took terrible portraits and landscape photos on my Lumix GX9. Supposedly I should have been using it only for street photography. And it seems that the actually brilliant low lighting landscape shots I took on my Lumix G9ii were so bad, that I really should have been using a full frame camera.... Talking of which, Micro Four Third cameras are so rubbish, that I now own three (Lumix GX9, Lumix G9 Mark ii and OM System OM-1 Mark ii) and I've clearly wasted my money by not getting the latest full frame monster to break my back. Great video, by the way. Very apt.

I bought a reconditioned E-M1 Mk II from OM System over two years ago. Later that year I bought a new GX85 two-lens kit on sale to have a smaller, lighter, rangefinder-style camera, since Olympus didn't have anything equivalent. I like both cameras. I shoot stills with both of them, mostly landscapes. These two cameras serve my needs, and they were not expensive. I could afford an OM-1, OM-1 Mk II or G9 Mk II, but I really don't need the additional features for my photography.

Great video! I actually think there are two separate but overlapping hobbies, cameras and photography. People passionate about photography tend to happily use whatever tool is available regardless of what camera/lens they prefer and get good results. Others are obsessed with cameras and display little interest in photography. And there's nothing wrong with that, I love mechanical film cameras even though I haven't shot film for decades. And camera can be used for anything if the lens has sufficient reach or field or view and the shutter speed range is enough. My E-M1X is always described as a sports/action camera, I can see it is very capable for action photography but I use it for everything. And you are right, a good camera is a good camera for as long as it works and does what you need it to do. I only got rid of my Fujifilm X-E2 because after many years of heavy use travelling around the world it started dying. The 17MP sensor was still more than adequate and APS-C fine. I love the m43 format and find it an excellent all around size.

If, however like me, one watches too many RUclips camera reviews and/or reads too many photography magazines, and takes heed of everything that every reviewer recommends, then one is likely to end up with a camera cupboard that resembles a photography store!🤬
My philosophy, after years and years of chopping and changing my cameras, at great expense I may add, on the advice of various well known reviewers at long last is: I select a camera body and lenses from a manufacturer that I like, and that does the job I want them for, irrespective of what market sector they are aimed at - then stick with them and to h… with what the opinionated so called ‘experts’ say. I always enjoy your videos Brian, keep them coming👍. Henry

I quite agree with your observations. I've just bought an Olypus Pen E-PL8 (on eBay) which was recently described by a reviewer as "the camera no-one is buying". I checked another well known second hand photography site and there were about a dozen of these cameras for sale....all white. Why? Because they, in this colour, were marketed as a fashion accessory for women. I assume women change their fashion accessories as often as they change their hand bags. I should point out mine is black/chrome.....much more macho. It is a very capable camera and used with my v-4 viewfinder can cover most situations, almost as well as my Oly E M5 Mk2. So it appears to be all down to how a product is marketed. Either way, however these cameras are marketed, I enjoy using them and thats good enough for me.

As always, thank you, Brian! Everyone has a camera in their pocket these days, even if the don't have a "real" camera. Regardless, being able to take a good photo isn't just a matter of knowing "which" camera to use & how to use the camera, it's also having a sense of design in one's mind's eye. Whatever the most expensive equipment, if one does not have the ability to compose in their mind's eye, the photo might be technically spot on put it will not produce any positive emotions and appreciation for the shot. While I appreciate digital and the instant gratification, let alone the ability to manipulate & improve a shot with the appropriate applications, this type of tech talk is marketing is hype, misinformation and deception, plain & simple...a marketing tool. Look at the photos produced in the 19th century. What about the Deguerrotype and the ambrotype? Those shots provoked emotional reactions, be they historic &/or creative. What will be said about today's cameras in 165 years??? More important, if the shot lasts, what will be said about said shot in in 165 years? Even 100 years? Just make certain you have a good lens and get out there and shoot! The process & satifaction of shooting are as important as the results. Cheers! Safe travels!

In the end it is all in the results. The Beatles, Paul and John had some unorthodox ways of playing their guitars, which produced great results. For general photography most modern day cameras of the last 0 to 8 years work pretty good. Unlike film cameras however, the digital camera is a different beast, thus many electronic improvements have come along. It doesn't mean one needs to change. If you want something a new camera, phone, TV or car can do that your current one cannot do as well -- buy it. The latest years I have switched to doing mainly street photography. I still use an Olympus EM10 mkII, now and then, but there are some things it cannot do compared to my Lumix GX-9. You cannot set a minimum shutter speed, it is a 16 and not 20MP sensor and it works nicely with the Leica 15mm with an aperture ring on the lens. Both cameras have tilt only screens, and I would not recommend one with a flippy screen. Yes, many street shooters use cameras with the flippy screen -- I see it as a penalty however. More recently I bought a Nikon Z5, and the dynamic range is very nice. You not only get a full frame for editing, you get that ability to alter the image more in post. Some like two card slots -- and yep, it is a good thing. Especially the day you forgot to put the first one in. Ummm, yea, stupid me. As far as controls, I have yet to buy a Sony. Maybe the new models feel more like a camera, but the ergonomics may still be lacking -- could be wrong. And that menu system -- not a gem. Once you find what works, don't let me or anyone else tell you that you're using the wrong camera. It the wrong camera works for you, or you play an instrument wrong with good results, so be it. Let it be. Take care, Loren Schwiderski

Agree Brian. I moved from Nikon ASP-C (will keep it forever) to Olympus with an EM1 mk2 and 3 pro lenses from wide to 40-150 and am blown away. They say that Micro 4/3 is no good in low light, but I don't find that true. With the fabulous bright glass that is affordable, and the new Noise software from the likes of Lightroom, I don't need full frame. If I won some moneyI'd get an OM1 Mk2, but if not, I'll keep my EM1.2 until it breaks. I have fully embraced the new format and now am taking up Macro which I've never done before. I'm 65 and find the size of the kit a real plus. So I do street, architecture, landscape, birds in flight, wildlife, macro for bugs and flowers and candid shots of dogs and my grandkids. One camera is fine. I'm still learning how to use it!!

There's nothing wrong with either of them, but I think they're use-case is very different. I know working professionals who shoot with APS-C DSLR bodies and cheap lenses, and somehow still get enough work to keep the lights on.

I have many different cameras from Full frame, APSC and micro 4/3, many of them are considered dual function cameras but I did not choose them for their video functions as I only shoot stills. The reason why I have such a wide variety of cameras because I photographed a wide variety of subjects in different situations and environments, theire are places where a full frame camera draws to much attention so I use one of my other cameras, I hate using a phone to take photos, so I have a few different sizes of 4/3 bodies that range from a Panasonic G9 down to a Olympus EM5 and EM10 MK4, they handle everything from large zoom lenses to the very small Panasonic 14mm f2.5 on the EM 10 a setup that is so small it fits in the front pocket of a hoodie pullover sweatshirt. This allows me to carry a full feature camera almost anywhere and is part of my vacation travel camera package when I use air travel. I can pack a dual camera body with a variety of zoom and prime lenses in a small camera backpack that I use as my carry on, I also have all my travel documents plus things that I don't want to put in my check in bag.

I've been doing photography (video isn't important to me) for 5 decades, and have been impressed with it's performance (even with "consumer level" lenses), size, weight, overall handling, weather sealing, and cost of (great condition) used lenses. My biggest issue is the viewfinder doesn't play well with polarized sunglasses shooting in landscape orientation so I bought non-polarized ones for doing outdoor photography. One day it may fail me and then I will struggle to find another gem that does such a good job as this one . My last digital camera was mint and a true gem that I gave to my nephew when he visited because he showed an interest in photography . Most of our gear is so full of tech that most of us will never use it all . There are key things I need and will always look for in another model . But it all begins with the image and if you like the way your gear produces it’s images , you may not need to move on from it. In a phase : is it a need or a want ?

I'm enjoying and really liking the new direction of nikon with my ZF camera. I mean the new nikon 26mm pancake and weather resistant lens and sharper than my panasonic 20mm 1.7. Jeeeez! The Lumix small and neat camera coming out is a FF.
Lumix are moving more towards the S line, and I think the G9 mkii is really an afterthought after 6 years from the original and using S5 designed bodies , and sales have not been great, I think mft has reached its plateau.
The bottom line is no one really cares what camera you use tbh, well apart from other photographers.
OM system had to choose a market to target as they have limited product, and they've probably done the right thing.
All camera companies have dedicated products to a specific customer base.
Of course you can choose to shoot what you want with your camera, but it doesn't mean it's good at everything, I find the portrait images from a mft sensor not to be that great, that's one of the areas a FF shines.

When I had my Canon 5D Mk iv I could shoot anything.
Now that I switched to my M43 E-M1 Mk III it appears that I’ll be forced to limit my categories. Had I only known.
I’ll have to stop shooting landscapes, portraits, macro, events, and street and only shoot sports.
If people would only give this system a chance they’d be dually impressed. Perhaps camera companies need to start marketing to push people away from their phones for their special moments. For some, phones are good enough, but there are plenty of people who could be drawn back to dedicated cameras with the right products and strategies.

    Hi Brian,
Just a little contribution to the debate: I hope I don’t get hate for this as its only a record of a personal journey.
Up until recently I was an Olympus fan boy, owning the EM1X, EM1 mkiii, EM5 mkiii (suitable for all genres of photography!) and 9 Olympus lenses.
In use, I always preferred my prime lenses.
I became rather disillusioned with M43 with the launch of the OM1 mkii - not a great advancement in the format?
Also, I analysed the images taken over the last 5 years and was surprised to learn that 95% of my photographs were in the 35mm-50mm range - time for a slimdown!
Decided to sell all my M43 gear....
Bought a Fuji X100vi for my 35mm/50mm output - awaiting delivery.
    Bought a Sony A7Cii, the 24mm 2.8 and the 85mm 1.8.
I might add the Sony 90mm macro at some stage.
    Here are some weight comparisons:
    OM1 mkii (599g) plus Olympus 17mm 1.8 (120g) = Total weight 719g
    Fuji X100VI = 521g
    OM1 mkii (599g) plus Olympus 45mm 1.8 (116g) = Total weight 715g
    Sony AC7ii (514g) plus Sony 85mm 1.8 (371g) = Total weight 880g
Although I was mostly happy with the Olympus output, I’m loving the images from the Sony and enjoying the low light performance and “cropability” of the files.
Olympus cameras have lots of features that others don’t - I just didn’t use them and felt it was time to move on.
The most important thing is, I'm taking more pictures.

Brian, good video. I used my "wildlife" camera, my OM-1, today to take photographs and videos of my niece's college graduation. Low light venue. Used auto ISO with max ISO set at 25600 for pictures and 12800 for video. Used the 40-150mm f/2.8 for reach. Worked great!

  • @vermis8344
    @vermis8344 4 месяца назад +1

I _do_ use OM gear for wildlife; I rolled my eyes and laughed at all the nitpickers complaining that that's all that OM is good for these days. Just a new slot for the already-busy OCD pigeonhole board, stuck in beside old chestnuts like 'MFT is bad in low light!' and 'crop sensor = different f stop!'
I think it's a little disappointing that Panasonic and OM are dragging their feet on the rangefinder-style end of things, but I have no idea what they might pull out of the hat in the future. In the meantime my shiny new OM-5 (combined with kit lenses or some of the third party manuals featured here) actually encourages me to go out and try more street, landscape, and what-have-you.
To think that it can't be versatile is like - what? To say you can't use oil paints for landscapes, only watercolours; and you can't use watercolours for still lifes, only pastels? If the medium - or the format - is limiting, I'd say the majority of the problems exist just behind the viewfinder.

Hi Brian, i enjoyed your video again..
When thinking about the "best tool for the job" or "wrong camera" some memories come to my mind. How in Moby Dick a sailor used an ax to shave himself. Or think of the different knifes in the kitchen, to cut a big loaf of bred a long knife with sawblade is useful, to spread the butter it doesnt need to bee long. etc I think with the experience of the "user" any knife might work (more or less). I think even intentionally using the "wrong" tool might lead so some new creative style to do the job.
In the context of camera i think there might be features which are helpful for certain shots, but not having the features might make you more creative to get the same job done (if you do it for a living nowadays you might think different though..).
Hope my lines are not "too far off" the topic.. Hope all have fun shooting and creating images and memories...

    • @ThatMicro43Guy

Spot on topic for me. Really good points and I agree, using the ‘wrong’ tool can often create different outcomes and/or techniques to what would have been achieved by using (other people’s idea of) the ‘right’ tools. Many world beating innovations were invented by not doing something right or using the right techniques. RADAR was developed from a project to produce a radio ‘death ray’ which failed miserably.

I think this wildlife push is OM trying to grab a niche as they can’t compete it seems in portrait or sports against the full frame or crop sensors. That I don’t believe. I agree that the GX80 and E-M10 MkII which I also use, are superb smaller form factor cameras and still more than hold their own. My GX80 is my most used camera for a reason that I can’t pin down. I just tend to grab it and go, although the G9, like the G7 that it replaced, with the 14-140 lens is also very well used. All are liked. None are incapable of taking great quality photos in most conditions except some that don’t like to get wet.

Hi Brian! Hope you have a good holiday in Wales. Although I agree with what you said in this video, I don't really see the point of doing it! Its like answering the question that isnt asked! I have never been told I'm using the wrong camera, and if I was I wouldn't worry about it. I use mft, but no one that sees my photos ever asks what camera I use or suggests it isnt good enough.
There are hundreds (probably thousands) of different cameras available today that are very capable of doing most of what most people want to achieve. Every camera is a compromise in some aspects so you just prioritise in what are the most important criteria for you, which may be size, weight, cost, handling, stabilisation, autofocus, lens selection, dynamic range, ..., .... If you are very specialist in what you shoot then you are best going for a camera that is designed specifically for that, but generally speaking, for most of us there are so many options, and which camera you have isnt that important. Far more important is knowing the strengths and weaknesses of the camera you have, knowing how to use it best to get what you are after and then practice, practice, practice. 😊

It's become more noticable with the rise of the internet/youtube and people wanting to draw traffic to their sites, but there have been people keen to denigrate other people's cameras for years. I'm sure you'll remember the camera club bore with the medium format camera who was a bit snooty about available light portraits shot on m42 and Pentax K mount SLRs, whose only real message was 'I can afford a Hasselblad, and to hire a studio/ model/ lighting set-up'. One of the reasons that I find it funny that so many people bang on about 'full-frame' these days is that they are exactly the same sort of people who would have considered 35mm cameras declassé in the past. The solution is to find gear you can realistically own and use, and learn to use what you have, and steer clear people and websites/youtube channels claiming that you need the newest and best to be a valid photographer. Camera collecting has always been a hobby in its own right, and one that has had a lot of crossover with photography, but it isn't the same thing.

In my opinion, there is no such thing as a camera that is the best at everything.
The best camera... the one you have with you
My photography tools have always been purchased secondhand.
As an old school photographer, I only had one problem with mirrorless cameras. And that was the viewfinder. The SLR camera won convincingly there. I like to see clearly what I capture. The brick-heavy Nikon full frame is still a camera that I really enjoy using.
Now that the Lumix g9 has dropped considerably in price on the second-hand market, I bought it given the good reviews about the viewfinder. For telephoto photography, this is a clear winner for me. The fantastic stabilization, combination of internal and lens, and the crop factor is a gain. What I already experience as a disadvantage is that noise quickly occurs at higher ISO values and limited light.
For street photography I use a Fuji X100 S (also an old one)

Hi Brian, I think the reason that there isn't so much focus on new small rangefinder type cameras from Olympus and Lumix is that they aren't sure there is a definite market to aim for. Like you I have a GX8, which suits my needs perfectly. I know a lot of people prefer the GX9 for reasons that are the inverse of why I prefer the GX8. Would I go out and buy a GX9 mark2 with a non-articulating screen? Probably not. Would someone preferring a GX9 go out and buy a GX8 mark2 (larger body, articuating screen) regardless of how it was badged? In fact, how many GX users would definitely go out and spend £900 on a mark 2 version of a camera that they are perfectly happy with the existing model of? I probably wouldn't, and it sounds like you wouldn't either. Birders and videographers might feel they need the latest iteration of AF and IBIS to go with their existing telephoto lenses, but every day carry/street/hobby photographers probably aren't going to rush out and update to a new GX model. Largely because of youtube, I suspect most keen m43 photographers would snap up a GM1 if it became available nearby, but does that mean they would also buy an updated version at full price? Probably not.

      @ThatMicro43Guy  2 месяца назад +1

They are both good cameras, actually it’s hard to find a bad camera these days. Firstly, I’ve never used an EP7.
The EP7 is smaller I think than the GX9. But the GX9 has one thing which I cannot be without and that’s a EVF, a proper eyepiece. I’ve tried just using a screen and it’s almost useless for me when the light is behind me to see the screen properly. That’s the deal killer for me. I actually own a camera without an EVF, the GX1, so I speak from experience.
The GX9 is basically a G9 sensor but with less of the features. I.e. very good. But there again, so is the EP7
Lens wise the ones you already have are totally compatible with either camera.
So that’s it for me the GX9
