A few years ago I heard this song in the distance while I was walking throught the streets of Moscow. When I reached the sound, I saw a man playing it with a balalaika. He had a long white beard and told me a story related to the song, about an Indian magician that was killed because of a promise he made to the moon in the last eve of the year. After he stopped playing, I was so enthusiastic that I asked the white-bearded man about his life. He stared in silence and took a little photo out of his pocket. It was a nice, blond, innocent girl. «She's my daughter»-he told me-«She loved this song, but died two months ago because of a heart disease. I play each night in the streets to remember her». He started crying, and I've never seen this man again, nor his balalaika. And I haven't heard this song again without thinking about him, that magical night in Moscow and his profound sadness.

Rimski-Korsakov has always been my favorite. His music has a melodic, often very recognizable and sensual quality that stays with you, and often very airy, joyful and light. Once you hear a piece of his music, you can always remember its source. Many of his pieces have been used in popular music so that the remakes of it always bring it "current" and not forgotten.

Gorgeous! I had tears in my eyes; incredible strings! Gentle, yet magnificent!
I love Rimsky-Korsakov, but stand ashamed that I did not hear this music until now.
My most recent instructor said her beloved grandfather had asked her to perform this song with her group. They always had close bonds through music...he would always pick out pieces for her to try.
Sadly, not long after she finished performing, she got word that her grandfather was taken to the hospital. He passed away later that evening.
I had respectfully asked her what song it was. I listened to it today.
    What a gift.
    I am in complete awe.

About 10 years ago, I was walking by a paint store on Heping Road in Taipei. Flute notes came wafting out of the store: Song of India! I went in and there was a young woman with her music stand in between stacks of paint cans. She'd studied music, she said, but now she worked in a paint store. Or maybe she owned the paint store. Anyway, she still loved music. I used to go by there fairly often, but I only heard music once.

This is one of the first classical compositions I was introduced to long ago. It was in this piano music book for beginners entitled "World's Most Famous Classical Music." So, I'm taking a trip through memory lane. Nice recording.

    Well , I learned something today .
I was unaware that Tommy Dorsey made " THIS beautiful piece of music into a SWING hit iN the 40's .
As a CBC listener I had heard this many times without realizing it was a Rimsky Korsakov
    classic .
A great musician like Mr. Dorsey took a piece of music by a GREAT COMPOSER and adapted it to be heard by even a greater audience .
Wonderful job by BOTH YOU GUYS .
    NO . GREAT JOB !

Incredible beautiful melody ! I guess this was the original version by R-K (who had a egendary talent for orchestra scoring ,together with Berlioz; both immensely admired by conductors for their enormous talent for Orch. scoring). A composer of genius OC !

I see several mentions of Tommy Dorsey here, but am surprised to see no one mentioning that Victor Young surely took his inspiration for "India Country Side"-that's the way I see it in print-from it. "India Country Side" can be heard in the score from the 1956 blockbuster Around the World in 80 Days, a movie that has not held up at all well. (About all it had was a beautiful balloon.)

The song is really beautiful and haunting. If it is about India which the Title suggests must mean the Tragedy of Indian state today. Most of Urban and Rural India today is so much polluted, dirty and shabby looking populated with poor people. I am not at all proud. We are working and working but will ever see again the beauty which has been lost while this Plant we call earth survives.
