loved this video girl and so glad u enjoyed ur first semester! As a freshman myself (Brownie!), I enjoyed my first semester as well. Actually, I really enjoyed it. Rice is honestly so chill and has a great mix of rigor and activity. I absolutely love being able to spend so much time outside, rlly brightens the day imo. While you still face the same struggles as any other college student, there’s something ab waking up (most) everyday to sunny skies, nice weather, a gorgeous campus, and a built-in family at your college. To your point about Houston, I would say that at Rice, you can really choose whether or not you feel like you’re in the city. The campus itself (especially North colleges) can be very quiet and almost woodsy. However, the metro (train and bus) are very accessible and can take you into Houston free of charge, if you want a more urban feel. I honestly feel like Rice students don’t leave campus enough, but that might just be me. Another thing I would say is that as a humanities major, I do feel a little outnumbered at times, but you will be able to find like minded people. This is the main thing I was concerned ab coming in, so I’m glad it didn’t turn out to be a big deal.

Hey! I’m applying to Gatton Academy this year. I know you are attending a different school now, but could you please make a video about some tips and tricks for Gatton applications and interviews? Or even a comment response would be greatly appreciated!
Great video, thanks! How hard is it to get the class you want? Many schools limit class size, so those with that major have a spot. So if you are a STEM major and want to take a music class or language class, is it pretty hard to score a spot?
rice freshman here! While it can often be difficult to get your first choice, ideal schedule at registration, most of the time professors and advisors will make sure you get into the classes you need to take for your major. other than that, it really depends on the class. LPAPs (required one semester fitness course) are notoriously hard to get into and sometimes FWIS (first year writing seminar) courses can also fill up quickly. i haven’t heard any specific problems w language or music classes for non majors, though, so I would think those would be relatively open.
Hi! Adding on to what Riley said, it definitely depends on the classes you’re trying to take. Usually, classes that fulfill distribution group requirements like psych classes are pretty difficult to get into since everyone wants to take those (so I know a lot of cog sci majors struggle with getting into their classes for example). But for stem, it’s not as competitive. I’m a CS major and had no problem getting into classes that fulfill my major. For language classes, it will depend on which language but I’m taking Korean and got into the class no problem. I’m not entirely sure about music classes. But often times, you can reach out to the professor of a class that’s full and they’ll let you special register!
The question every international grad has "How are the opportunities and internships?" and what are chances of we getting them . I have the same question , Please do reply !?
Thanks for all of your great videos! Did you end up getting dual enrollment credit at Rice? You mentioned this as a positive for Rice when you were comparing Rice, Columbia, & CalTech and I was under the impression they don't accept DE credits
I was able to transfer like 1.5 semesters worth of dual enrollment credit and several AP course credits. However, they didn’t take some of my classes - I had to provide pretty detailed information like the syllabus and like a week by week schedule of topics that were covered. If the topics covered weren’t satisfactory, the credits were not able to be transferred. So, while a majority of credits for me transferred I cannot guarantee which of yours will transfer, that’s something you’d have to discuss with your advisor upon acceptance
do you think that rice being a mostly stem oriented university limits the opportunities that social science/humanities students may have, such as internships, classes etc.
I'm going into highschool next year and am doing architecture. I really want to go to Rice for Architecture but I really don't know if it's right so this really helps me know if I want to truly plan to go there in the future. 😁💜
I’m so happy my videos are able to help you out! I don’t know much about the archi program but I do know it’s the top in the nation so rice is definitely a great choice :)
Hi, I would like to know more about the dorms. As an international student trying to get a full ride scholarship I know I probably won't be able to choose, but the options in general are good? The bathroom are private or for the entire floor? And I can have access to a kitchen if I want to cook?
Hi! Actually, basically no freshman get to choose which residential college to be a part of (it’s randomly assigned freshman year unless you have a sibling who went to rice). Each residential college has different styles of dorms: some with private bathrooms for just two people like mine is, some have communal. All residential colleges have a kitchen. If you want to learn about my room, checkout this video: ruclips.net/video/EsVKC1t4g6Q/видео.html I wish you the best of luck!
The dorms are overall pretty good. Hanszen College is known for having some of the worst dorms on campus, but my experiences haven't been too bad so far (I'm an sophomore). In 6 of the 11 colleges, all bathrooms are private. In the other 5 its about 2/3 private and 1/3 communal, though it varies. Each college has a student commons, a quad, one or more kitchens, a game room, a laundry room, a mail room, and many study spaces. Hope to see you at Rice!
Hello! I was wondering how/if any college credits transferred to Rice? Im going to be a senior and i'm trying to decide if i should take APs or dual credit classes at UofL's campus . does it matter if UofL is public and Rice is private ?
@@indigomoon9 great question! Rice is pretty generous on accepting credit transfers. It largely depends on the material that was thought though and which class you’re trying to replace it with. In terms of APs, I believe they take most of them with a good enough score but I’m not sure if they can replace major requirements (they may just count as electives depending on your major). In terms of dual credit, I was able to transfer a lot of my credits I took at WKU but that required giving the credit transfer advisor more information (basically I had to give as much detail as I could about what topics were covered each week, the syllabus, etc.) until the advisor was able to determine if it met the standards at Rice. So, I can’t say for sure which is better to take, it depends on which classes at Rice you’re trying to replace your credits with. hope that helps!
@@MinaRyumae ty for the awesome info. so if a lot of ur WKU credits transferred, do you still do a full four years at rice, or do u do more elective classes or something?
hey mina, great video! I just finished my Kira interview recently and got another invite for a community assessment. I literally can't find any info on this online. Could you maybe help me out?
Hi, Can you pl. let me know the situation regarding internship & jobs for CS graduate students ? Does Houston have good enough industry for the internships & jobs Masters in Computer Science ?
I can’t fully answer your questions, but I will say the cs industry right now is a bit unstable (a lot of people were hired during Covid when companies were expanding but now many people were laid off). So, this year when I applied for internships, I heard about many of my peers getting their offers rescinded. I didn’t apply to many places specifically in Houston as I personally wanted to go to a coast, so I’m not sure about Houston specific opportunities. For masters, rice has a really great 5 year masters in cs program where you can graduate with a bachelors and masters in cs in 5 years. Hope that helps!
Hi, I need your advice on something. If I want to do a program of biology at rice university, should I pursue a major or classes in bioscience or something else??
Hi! I’m not very knowledgeable about the biology majors at rice as I’m a CS major. But I would say it depends on what kind of career you are trying to pursue post grad and which major is the best fit for that! If you need specific information I’d advise emailing those departments and I’m sure they’d be able to better answer your questions :)
Hi Mina, thank you for your insights, just a quick question about the academic program there, just wondering if you need to follow a certain sequence of courses, or you will have the flexibility to create your own educational path?
For the most part there is a lot of flexibility! Of course there are a set of classes that you have to take for the major you choose. And then there are distribution classes where you take classes you want to from a certain subject. But other than that you are free to take whatever you want to!
Hey, my comment might be late but what about internship opportunities for CS majors? I’m trying to decide between A&M college station and Rice…and internship opportunities are something I’m looking for.
Hi, thank you for this great video!!! Is it difficult to switch from college of natural science to college of engineering? Is there any requirements of gpa or courses while switching?
It definitely is not that difficult to switch! You may or may not have to do a spatial test (like an engineering IQ test thing) which determines if you need to take an additional class or not. Other than that, there are no requirements I’m aware of although I’m sure there is some gpa requirement that’s not that high. In general, rice makes it pretty flexible to switch majors !
For me personally, I wasn’t really that nervous and I haven’t really heard of many people that were. Rice professors are all really great people so I definitely wouldn’t worry about that!
Honestly, sport culture isn’t really that big here at rice as opposed to big public schools known for basketball or football. Some people do attend games but I wouldn’t say that many people do
What should i do with my essay? Can i write an ‘’ the box’’essay about the rice but not from the human side. I love to pretend i’m a cloud, or grass sth to share my opinion and insight about that. Imna be grass 🌱🦜 with human’s personalities..
Rice freshman here! it really depends on what classes you are in. I would say for the most part STEM classes are pretty rigorous and often require a lot of outside work. As a humanities/social sciences major (and as someone who enjoys discussion/writing based classes) I honestly feel like most of my classes aren’t too challenging. I know a lot of my STEM (esp comp sci, chemistry, physics etc) friends regard their classes as being fairly difficult, though. Hopefully that helps!
Hi! I think the best way to answer your question is that you should expect Rice classes to be more rigorous than a lot of other colleges and that should be expected with a top 20 university. However with that being said, it is definitely manageable and most students are still able to find a balance between academics and their social life. You’ll just need to develop time management skills if you haven’t already and you should be fine. Keep in mind that if you get accepted to rice it’s because you belong here and admissions believe that you can handle the curriculum!
My number one tip would be to never procrastinate (easier said than done I know😅). But if you complete your assignments right when they’re given, you’ll be much more thankful later. Other than that, just take things one at a time since it is often a lot more stressful when you think about all the things you have to do as opposed to thinking of it like a checklist. I hope this helps you!
There might be but I don’t think so (or at least I haven’t heard anyone being a marketing major) but I do know they recently created a business major which is gaining popularity so I’m sure there are marketing business classes
I personally do not know much about transferring so I’m sorry I can’t help you out! But I’m sure if you have specific questions you could contact admissions and they could help you
Hi, wish I could answer your question but I’m not really familiar with any of the masters programs at rice since I’m an undergrad. I’m sure you could reach out to admissions though! Best of luck with your MBA
Actually, rice is pretty generous in general with their financial aid. I was lucky enough to receive a full ride academic scholarship. Also, I’m majoring in CS

@@riley5142 ya thanks. I plan to study Mathematical Economic Analysis at Rice and the curriculum seems pretty challenging.
Could you please tell us.
How much the annual tuition fee in rice university .
Thanks😊
87,000!
well instate is like 60-70, but with all the fees added in it becomes 87,000
Can someone here tell me you what y’all wrote on your essayyy plz
Do you have any study/time management tips for incoming high school freshmen?
My number one tip would be to never procrastinate (easier said than done I know😅). But if you complete your assignments right when they’re given, you’ll be much more thankful later. Other than that, just take things one at a time since it is often a lot more stressful when you think about all the things you have to do as opposed to thinking of it like a checklist. I hope this helps you!
Is there a marketing in rice ? Also is there advertising ?
There might be but I don’t think so (or at least I haven’t heard anyone being a marketing major) but I do know they recently created a business major which is gaining popularity so I’m sure there are marketing business classes
do you have any advice for transfers into rice?
I personally do not know much about transferring so I’m sorry I can’t help you out! But I’m sure if you have specific questions you could contact admissions and they could help you
Hey mate hope u doing good ! Am from India moving to US soon could u plz say me how's MBA in rice ?
Hi, wish I could answer your question but I’m not really familiar with any of the masters programs at rice since I’m an undergrad. I’m sure you could reach out to admissions though! Best of luck with your MBA

Super expensive school. How did you get the money to go there? And what degree you choose?
Actually, rice is pretty generous in general with their financial aid. I was lucky enough to receive a full ride academic scholarship. Also, I’m majoring in CS
