As a geology professor who has a parricular fondness for carbonate minerals, this video is definitely going in the "show my students" bin.

I'm a Geologist and I'm always thankful for shows like this one that propagates knowledge about crystals and rocks. Before I went to college, almost no one understood the bare minimum about geology and nowadays it's much easier to explain more complex subjects to non geologists. Thank you for this wonderful work, Scishow!

Welp, we made it a whole day into 2024 before Hank started talking about weird poop. That's not necessarily a bad thing, in fact when Hank doesn't talk about poop or butts for more than a day or so I start to worry about him a bit.
You can bet I'll be ruining my family's next vacation when I tell my kids their sandcastle is made of parrotfish poop (and I'll teach them some history too when they learn that moats were basically castle septic systems, so it all comes full circle!)
Here's hoping 2024 isn't as crappy as 2023! 💩

Calcite crystals have a unuque optical property that was used to make Viking Sunstones, by covering the 4 sides entirely and leave a slit in the covering on the top and leave the bottom uncovered. When you look through from the bottom you will see 2 strips of light instead of one, the one closer to the light source, even if it is behind clouds or below the horizon/behind an object will be brighter. When both strips are the same brightness you are pointed directly at the object.

@@Faesharlyn quite right, it turns out now that I think of it, there is some nice optical quality right across the street (unless the cold rain has washed it away since it's more soluble in cold water than hot) and imma try to gather some to make sunstones for my pagan friends, nowhere near as nice as mine mind you but still

@Faesharlyn thank you for the well-wishes, I have a fair bit of experience mining my own gems and I come from a clan that never lost its focus on crafting so I have a wealth of experience, im really just concerned they may have eroded away since I saw them last since they were like in the breakwater from a channelized wetland valley so there has been a fair bit of water to have potentially eroded them but I think some new ones were placed recently. Thanks again I love to get to nerd out lol
another fun fact about calcite and its optical properties is that some trilobites (ancient isopod-like marine arthropods) actually had eyes with calcite lenses - they used crystal rocks to see!

If that kind of sand is pooped out by a fish that basically poops little crystals, then that’s a _lot_ less disgusting than when all I’d heard about that sand is that it was some kind of fish poop. In this case, thinking harder about it has been a good thing for me to not find it gross!
I have a vegan friend who thinks I'll flip out when hearing honey is bee vomit. If I'd never had it & didn't understand some scientific/biological realities of it, maybe. But nah lol

Fun fact:
Home (reef) aquariums that are very low in magnesium will form little crystals of calcium carbonate. You can tell when it happens because it looks like it is snowing inside your tank.
(It's also VERY bad).

The rocks have been really fun so far. I live in a river delta area with barely any rocks and the little notes are fascinating.

Only white/coral sand, aka aragonite sand, which is not that common. I don’t think most beach sand is made that way.
Edit: Of course he said 70% of sand in Hawaii and the Caribbean. I was thinking worldwide.

The thing I find fascinating is the fact life uses Aragonite / or / Calcite for shells depending on the current Ph conditions.
How resilient ocean life is, on such a base level, regarding changes to the environment, is always astounding.
I'd be interested to know if any invertebrates exist that can switch between the 2 in a single generation?

Aragonite is sometimes fluorescent under UV light. If you have a real UV light, like a 365 nm one, not one of those purple flashlights you buy for $10, you might see your specimen glow a little bit. If you have a shortwave UV lamp (254 nm) you’ll likely get a brighter glow, especially if it’s a green glow.
I would have thought ice was the ocean's most important crystal.

G’day Hank, I would love to hear your take on the sedimentary formation of Australian opal in our ancient inland sea. I have the largest Oolitic opal matrix found so far, the story of its formation precedes opals formation. Thanks for doing what you do. 🤪👍
As a plumber that specializes with residential water filtration, conditioning and softening, this entire video made sense to me. As Hank said, the amount of magnesium in the water will depend if you get Aragonite or Calcite. In fresh water for potable use, has magnesium, which will cause Aragonite to form with certain conditioning systems.
I like this format & this was a great video! I'm happy Hank is healthy and full of energy.

Oh hey! I just learned about aragonite in the context of fish tanks this week. I just added aragonite substrate to help add more minerals to the water and raise the ph for my snails and shrimp.

HA! Only reason I know about this mineral is from having saltwater aquariums a few years ago. Getting aragonite sand was pretty common to use as the sand bed.

I work full time in the gemstone industry, also with crystals for specimen purpose. I have KG's of a really cool aragonite called Sputnik aragonite which forms very interesting structures that form as like little explosions from the inside out.
Hank's disappointment about not getting a real giant pearl for demonstration was palpable.

Funny how I thought of magnesium when I saw the thumbnail. I couldn't quite remember aragonite but knew Mg was important. I haven't thought of this stuff since university Biology. Thanks Hank. Always interesting.

Just got this months rock. Yay Aragonite! It's so pretty and so so white. I was wondering what is the best way to clean this beauty when it gets dusty? I live in the Mojave Desert so dust is just a environmental 'blessing' that just keeps on giving. I could of course put it in a plastic box but not really a look I like. Many of the caves in the cradle of mankind in South Africa are full of aragonite crystals, as a result of the dolomite and abundant magnesium (and other minerals) in the area. These crystals are especially pretty because they form long, bright, needle-like crystals that sparkle wildly when light is shone on them.
There are also a few examples of gypsum flowers and other calcium crystal formations too.

On vacation one day i saw a massive pillar of aragonite at a rock shop. Really amazing though honestly, how something as simple as a crystal can tell so many stories

You can get it to deposit on a screen by giving it a charge using a solar panel on a float. Build artificial reefs etc.

I don't know if this is the first Scishow to use your office as a set, but having a physical set really adds an interesting element to the video. I haven't watched Scishow in a while - was an avid Scishow Space follower once - so I don't know if you've used this more in recent times, but it's a nice change from the green screen. A little more interactive and engaging.

Many freshwater fishkeepers use aragonite in lieu of or in addition to gravel in order to increase the KH (carbonate hardness) of the water, which helps keep the pH stable. pH in an aquarium can drop significantly over time if KH is low, even with regular 20-30% water changes. KH is not to be confused with GH (general hardness), which refers to minerals such as calcium and magnesium in the water. These minerals are all vital to aquatic life, though the required levels vary widely among species.
