Have been watching and listening to you all day and I just have to write and say how much I have learned from you in one day is amazing as I was 'stuck' for months and felt like I was no longer 'able' to paint (after painting my entire life mostly tho in oils). So I want to thank you and my HOPE is you will make more videos in the exact way you have made the two I've seen (over and over) today. Don't change anything ! You are a great teacher with such a gentle touch that includes some subtle humor, so very enjoyable ! Thank YOU !!
Hi Cynthia, Thanks for all your kind words! I've been away from RUclips for awhile to concentrate on a series of large acrylic on canvas paintings, but I've resumed making videos again and will be posting on a regular basis. Glad you like my teaching approach. I base my approach in videos to how I teach in class. Thanks for watching!
Hi Ross, I am the one most happy to hear you will be making more videos, I have made a big leap (for me) so far and now paint every day. Have painted my entire life but in oils. Back to WCs where I started 50 years ago ! Hardest part for me so far is to *remember* to wet each new area EACH time I add color.....and slow down (way down)! And how do you clean your brushes Ross? When using 300 Arches, I find I am able to erase the pencil marks.. I have to order more reds - and the brown madder you mention..and the Windsor yellow too. I've been using Schminke. I really REALLY like how you 'think out loud' - it's the best way for others to absorb all you have to teach us. Hope you will have your own Website too one day. Best Wishes and a thousand thanks. NO need to reply to this, your time too precious.
Absolutely first rate! Appreciate your discussion of thought processes. Provided insight as to what the artist needs to consider before each step. Even better than some live workshops I've taken. Thank you, thank you!!
Your tutorials are the best. You carefully explain each step and make it easy to understand. Thanks for making this watercolor tutorial for everyone to enjoy.
Thank you so much for sharing your work and knowledge. You are so good at explaining and guiding us through the steps .I did my first water colour using your tutorial and the results were amazing. I have learnt far more than expected and appreciate your tutorials.
Hi Kazu, Glad you mentioned the annotations! I was wondering if they were helpful, and if I should continue with them. Now I definitely will. Thanks for taking the time to comment, and for watching my new video!
I decided to try your beautiful wet on wet techniques. Let's just say that my flower petals were a bull in a china shop version at best. I watched your videos again. My imagination could hope that it was getting better. I watched your videos again. I laid my paper flat instead of on my easel. I let the water soak into the paper a little instead of racing to slop paint into it. I dropped smaller amounts of dilute colors and let them mix on their own and dry. My petals are beginning to look a lot more delicate. Nothing like listening, trying again, listening, trying again, listening . . . Thank you!
I am thankful to be living in Santa Fe where there are jewelry supply stores all over the place. So I got my little squeeze bottle and am very happy with it. My problem is in doing these buds with the brown madder and green. I just can't seem to get the hang of it. You are an excellent teacher and I have learned a lot, just struggling with this technique.
Hi Ross, Thank you for the wonderful tutorial. I have been watching them over and over again. I have a question: how do you decide on the color of the background? I know that the complementary color to the subject is ideal most of the time, but how did you decide to add blue, purple and sienna in the background of this painting. Your advice would be appreciated.
I just began watercolor painting. (Never painted in my life) I was wondering is it ok to use the colors you already have? It just seems impossible to find all the colors you mentioned. I must thank you from the bottom of my heart, for your precious time, in showing us how to start and and finish a project. You are very special teacher. I have so much to learn and cannot afford classes around here. So I check everyday if something has new has come up. Again thank you sooooo much.
Hi Nennine, If you have the basic primary colors you can get started with painting. Red, Yellow and Blue will permit you to mix a wide range of colors, and you can gradually add the additional colors that I recommend. Good luck with your painting, and thanks for watching!!!
Thank you for your teaching videos, please do more. Do you paint birds? I have learned so much,. Yours are the best videos to be seen on utube. Can't thank you enough. Birds?
Hi Jan, Glad that you like my videos, and more are in the works. I don't paint birds but 2 years ago I started to occasionally photograph birds and I've been thinking about it. Might do it someday. Thanks for watching!
Well Ross! This was a wonderful tutorial. You explained every single thing you did. The mixing of the colors was really hellful to me....the grey mix, the browns, the greens...and the way you added water to push the color around. Where did you get that little tube you have the water in...with the needle dropper? I would like to get one. I have watched a number of painting tutorials but none so explanatorial as yours. Thanks for sharing your techniques and talents. Will have to watch part 2 later.
Thanks for watching! I purchased the squeeze bottle that you see me using from a jewelry supply store called contenti Go to their website and search for “Squeeze Bottle Dispenser with needle tiplets.”
Yes, watercolor pencils produce beautiful results although the application techniques will be different. I recommend experimenting on a small piece first.
I really like your dispensing bottles with the needle, but I don't know where to find one. I live in Spain and in London so will probably need to buy online. Can you help? Thank you so much for your videos - I am a seasoned water colourist but have learned so much from them and have radically shifted my approach after watching just two of them.
Hi Linda, I'm glad that you find my videos helpful! If you search the following on Amazon, you'll probably find something similar to the bottles that you see me use in the video.(1oz & 1/2oz Soft Squeeze Fine Metal Tip dispenser bottle) I got mine from a company called Beachcombers. Thanks for watching!
Hi Debra, As long as you stick with a good brand of watercolor such as Winsor & Newton or Schmincke, Aureolin Yellow is stable and permanent. I've used it for decades and haven't seen any color shifts. Schmincke's aureolin is based on a new modern synthetic pigment, and probably a better choice than the Winsor Newton.
Oh, thanks. Good to know because I have a tube (W & N) and I love it. I'm just beginning to paint after decades of graphic design, so am now trying to learn all about pigments.
I always have my students purchase either Winsor & Newton or Schmincke because their quality is outstanding. But I advise them against buying student grades of even these brands because the quality isn't as good. The lower the price, the less pigment and more filler!
May I ask, why do you paint the anthers first and mask them out? Why not mask them, paint the petals, and then paint them after? Is there a reason for this, or is this just the way you are most comfortable?
Incredible instruction. Seriously. One of the top five RUclipsrs teaching watercolor. Thank you!
Thank you Ross for being so generous and share your wonderful knowledge with us.
Much love and appreciation.
you truly are a great teacher.not with holding the technique at all, most of the people don't want to share it

Beautiful! But, I'm hearing bad things about Aureolin. Apparently it takes on a brownish cast after a few months. Have you had problems with it?
