2 years living in Estonia and you see this digital world everywhere. It is part of your normal day as a resident. As an immigrant (from Chile) working in the IT sector I can tell you that Estonia is developing and what is most important, creating state of the art digital services. Definitely a country that has reached a technological level that you cannot find in other countries. Great for Estonia and its people!
@Byteau I think you should apply for a job from Canada ahead of moving there. Once you have a job moving there is pretty easy. Often the companies even take care of the paper work.
@Byteau hey, nice that you started to learn Estonian. Even if is not mandatory, as most of the young population here speak English and most of the IT environment is in English as well, but estonian people really appreciate when immigrants speak their language, specially cuz is considered very difficult. Answering your first question, the IT sector have a lot of benefits, one of those is bring expats to Estonia without the need of waiting of the yearly quota for non european workers, this mean that it quite easy to get a job in one of these companies (if you have the skills). I recommend you to check this website www.workinestonia.com
@Young Tang we work with Muslim people and they have shared their friendship and taught us about compassion. The moment Estonia will go to hell is with people like you Young Tang. I have been travelling and living abroad for several years now, and Muslim people are not the responsable for the issues in our time. I can name you one responsable: "intolerance". I see that with your limited mind you didn't understand the purpose of this thread, that basically is to share the experience about how is to live in Estonia, so I recommend you to start a new thread in this video for special people, like you.
@Byteau Since Estonias population is actively decreasing, it's pretty easy go get in. If you want to make an estonian passpor, you just have to know a little estonian and politics.
@Byteau as a resident, its easy to find a job if you have a high enough knowlage and if you want to get in estonia you only need a passport like other countries, but be warned we have lots of russians so learn some of that too.

Because Social Security numbers are not designed for Identification, I find it hilarious how most of the world is shocked when they find out Americans place so little trust in their government. When you look at how badly they fuck even the most basic task, it's not that surprising. Estonia is a wonderful country, not just because of these technology hubs but also people in it are trustworthy.
This is great. Need to visit Estonia for sure.
This is what I miss as an estonian who lives abroad. Here in the UK I have to get a physical green prescription slip for my medication. Last time I saw one of those in estonia was probably sometime in the 00s. Some meds can be prescribed "digitally" here in the UK but it takes 48h and you can only collect them from a specific chosen pharmacy. And that only applies to repeat prescriptions, for new prescriptions I've always been given a paper prescription.
I've seen a brit "digitally sign" a document by taking a picture of her signature and pasting it at the bottom of the document... The UK, along with most of the world, is miles behind Estonia.
Jakob Jakobson in uk are alot of thieves be careful.
@@markus8553 I'm very well aware of that. The city I'm living in literally has a crime rate over 6 times higher than my hometown in Estonia, its tough

People at the cold regions are always inventive, while people on the hotter side hot-tempered and possibly will explode.

Because about 2/3 of Tallinn is soviet era buildings. They may be made prettier on the outside but they still are a soviet remnants. Lots of them with a "due date" approaching.

Well, it's not always this cold here, we do actually have sunny days as well :)
Lorgren Benirus when?
@@things4yougaming723 Well, you know, now and then :) But to tell the truth then April of this year was a very sunny month in several years, temperatures were also pretty nice. Although right now it's pretty deceiving - you look out of the window at morning and see a nice and sunny weather, real beauty. Then you merrily step out of the house at a decent pace and BANG! You're hit with a cold wind which cuts like a knife and temperature is shown as +2 degrees Celsius on your car dash. Nice clip. A bit odd to start the segment with music penned by a Russian composer, and with "Swan Lake" by Tchaikovsky, of all things.
Pretty much always the case with foreigners making a video about Estonia. Let's play some "local music", eh?
Maybe it's because of the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral opposite the Riigikogu complex.
The background music in the beginning reminded of Dee-Dee, Dexter's Laboratory. (Cartoon Network)

Right. Almost all ideas are great when their creators and users are operating within a framework rooted to benevolent principles but, as we see all too often, our current world is dominated by a system with a framework rooted to principles based on competetive self-interest that ia completely decoupled from sustainable behaviors, both socially and ecologically.
The speakers in this video seem to be caring, for the most part, but it doesn't take much for caring efforts to be coopted and corrupted.

03:50 "legal innovation" ... sure it has benefits, but are they worth the downside? The concerns would have had to be discussed in this video. Not mentioning them can hardly be accidental, but intentional. Giving your new born baby an ID before they can decide for themselves if they want it should be a crime imho.
05:05 "It's hard to say if US citizens would trust their governmnet with all their secrets". So funny that these words are released right after the US government had Julian Assange (the founder of WikiLeaks) illegaly arrested for uncovering crimes and secrets of the US government. *_"Unlike a social security number, Estonian's don't mind if theirs are made public"_*
That won't fly in *_Murica_*
Because they are not used as "unique, and secure" identification....
i think they are scared for something. im guessing identity theft. But here id say it is near impossible to steal someones identity. than you would need to kill him\her and he must not be reported and you would need to have his fingerprint + id card + all of the codes + face + phone. and mobile number with the correct sim card. and you will never use the card in a public place and you never change it (witch you can't do like passport 5 years )
and that person can not have any friends or familiy. because or else you are declared dead for example and all your logins are closed. a dead person can not use ID card. so yea. you would need a commitment or i don't know what to do it in here. just easyer to apply or just be yourself :D
Because Social Security numbers are not designed for Identification, I find it hilarious how most of the world is shocked when they find out Americans place so little trust in their government. When you look at how badly they fuck even the most basic task, it's not that surprising.
And i say this when i live in a country who's government is so utterly incompetent and technologically illiterate no sane person would trust them with paper scissors let alone some sort of federal ID. The US government almost looks competent in comparison.

Im actually scared of the notion and evidence of digital society. Dont get me wrong - it is indeed effective and helpful to have e-governance which allows to decrease bureaucracy. But when everything you and your children do can be and is recorded& monitored (Singapore, Estonia), when you have seld-navigating robots walking the street, and when every aspect of your life in a sense becomes technology-assisted - thats is scary.
