I loved this guy...Got to speak to him on several occasions....That Bass Drum control book was a very important book..But I'm happy he did a video in later years....Great drummer....Miss Colin.
As a drummer and drumming instructor, I think that Colin Bailey is a wonderful, clean, crisp player. He plays so musically; that's why many people wanted him on their recordings and live performances over many decades. He knows when and when NOT to unleash his great chops. There is nothing wrong with show drumming. I do that from time to time when it's called for; but it is more important for a drummer to keep steady time, kick the band, play sensitively, and very collaboratively. Play with simpatico, and make music that is pleasing. Drumming "gymnastics" can get boring. Anyway, Mr. Bailey is a supreme artist on the drums.
It's great to see this video. Colin Bailey played with pianist Vince Guaraldi in the 1960's. His most known work is probably on "A Charlie Brown Christmas".
Hi Colin, I found you through checking out John X. I am happy to see such wonderful playing. I have already learned so much from you. I am 58 and my wife passed away last your so I am not going to let her down by giving up. You and John are wonderful. Thank you William ST John
Colin I met you in 1990. I had gone to Danville to check out Gaylord Birch and you were subbing for him that night. I remember thinking "this guy is great, and he looks really familier." Then it hit me: "this is the dude who wrote that bass drum book.' You spent your entire break talking with me and telling me tonight show stories! Also, great video lesson!
Colin played w Vince Guaraldi in the 60s at San Francisco's Jazz Workshop. The trio worked there a lot. A legendary jazz club on Broadway during the Beat era before the street began to look more like the Tenderloin.
They are Skyntone. I .had them in the closet for quite while after Remo had sent them to me to try. Then I heard Jeff Hamilton play, and he uses those heads. I love 'em they're the closest to calf heads that I've played on
By the way, that was a pretty smooth performance. Really helpful, if I'm being honest, because I do tend to have troubles on transitions whenever I'm bringing my right hand from the ride onto the snare. So thanks Colin!
Yes it is Radia. I played on Terry Bozzio's at DW and I liked it so much I got Sabian to make me one. They take a week to make. I love it, it's got exactly the feel and sound I like, Dark!
Colin, I met you at Frank's Drum Shop in Chicago in the mid 60's. I just finished my lesson with Roy Knapp. He introduced me to you just after you finished a clinic on your just released "ahead of its time" bass drum book technique. You autographed my copy...which I still have. You're sound excellent as ever.
i love how Jazz players and especially YOU, phrase and use all surfaces like the same.... nice touch .. and great movement w melody... U must have a ton of patience to practice all these movements.. its nice to work on them slow... for sure.
i am guessing the cymbals are (from left to right, all Sabian), Duo Ride, Radia Ride (Terry Bozzio's signaturre series), and the Jojo Mayer Fierce Ride.
Great lesson; to the point and without the 'fluff'. As for the Skyntone heads, that sounds amazing! Never heard them before in a demonstration like this.
The best way to learn phrasing is to listen to records!! Learn the solos by ear, and it will come from there. Max Roach is KING for that! This book will certainly get you on the path to interpreting those great solos!
there is an 'ease and elegance' in his playing. a relaxed, studied, intentful and eloquently 'understated' element going on here. very nice work sir. one things for sure, this ain't about forcing all those 'blistering', blinding, 'trying to impress' chops on everyone. it's about 'breathing and...body position... hand and forearm ergonomics, a relaxed, subtle grip.... just really nice demo here!
These clips are not from a DVD. We put them together to promote Colin's book, "Drum Solos - The Art of Phrasing" and also to let everybody know that Colin is now offering Skype drum lessons.
Ahh thanks. Fantastic idea. I hope there are more to come. I love working out of his book, but nothing compares to watching the master lay it down himself! I am going to do a skype lesson with him for sure.
Thanks for this. I like drums. 😃
Such an Earthy kit. I love it!

Colin is a master musician and teacher. His bass drum technique is fantastic
Yes he is. Very well stated.
A master at work.

He, used to sit in on "The Tonight Show" two .Fillin in for Mr Ed.
Colin's the pinnacle of Jazz drumming, especially his brush work.

What a dynamic drummer Mr. ChoiChiWoo!!! Three cheers!!! Very proud of him.

You gotta LOVE that ride cymbal. That's "the sound".
Frank,
You are correct. I have always been a Zildjian guy. But I love the sound of Colin's cymbals.

Man these are some simple but life changing advices for aspiring jazz drummer
Stan, you nailed it. Simple but very effective, great-sounding jazz fills. Please take a look at Colin's other 3 videos.
All the best,
John X
An amazing musicianship!
Colin is a great jazz drummer and teacher!
Beautiful. He plays tunes on the drums. Not many people play like this. I would listen to an album of just him.
Colin is awesome. Love this video.
GREAT...................COLIN your playing is pure musical truth:):):):):):):):):):)
this drum kit sounds immaculate ;)
Love how u break it down simplified & then speed up in groove to show the potential of what just explained. I will learn from this
This is the way lessons should be given. Very sequential and easy to follow.
omg his kit sounds beautiful

Very good .my next book for sure.
j'adore
Your solo is very Smart sir .
Beautiful playing and beautiful sounding set!
You don't get Bailey's light touch and control on this instrument unless you are truly a great player and a great musician.
The drums have no tone when you hit them so lightly.
NO. YOU DONT GET IT!!!!!!!!!
@@ryanwilson8629 you have no ears
i love how Jazz players and especially YOU, phrase and use all surfaces like the same....

Very musical approach!!!!
Some fine drumming right there. Love the overall tone as well, reminds me of Ginger Baker's setup.
Exemplary musicianship and teaching clarity aside, what a wonderful Gentleman - 'old school', I think the younger generation say?
Beautiful cymbals!
The best way to learn phrasing is to listen to records!! Learn the solos by ear, and it will come from there.
Max Roach is KING for that! This book will certainly get you on the path to interpreting those great solos!
Before this, didn't think a snare with the snares off could sound so good in jazz. Now I know haha, gotta try this out sometime :)
