  • Hosted by the Visual Studies and Interdisciplinary Arts Programs in the Department of the Arts at Eugene Lang College (lang.edu/). The talk is made possible by additional support of the Carolee Schneemann Foundation.
Carolee Schneemann is a multidisciplinary artist who transformed the definition of art, especially the discourse on the body, sexuality, and gender. The history of her work is characterized by research into archaic visual traditions, pleasure wrested from suppressive taboos, and the body of the artist in dynamic relationship with the social body.
A retrospective of her work was recently exhibited at MoMA PS1 between October 22, 2017 and March 11, 2018. Her visual work is represented by PPOW and Galerie Lelong in New York City, as well as at Hales Gallery in London. The Museum der Moderne in Salzburg Austria originated the retrospective exhibit, and produced a full catalogue of her work in 2016. Her work has been shown at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art; Whitney Museum of American Art; Museum of Modern Art, NYC; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; and the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York. Film and video retrospectives have been held at the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Museum of Modern Art, NY; National Film Theatre, London; and Whitney Museum, NY among others. In 2015, Black Dog published a monograph, Unforgivable, and more recently in 2018, Primary Information published a book of her early writings, Uncollected Texts.
Students are strongly recommended to visit the MoMA PS1 exhibition “Carolee Schneemann: Kinetic Painting” before it closes on Sunday, March 11 prior to attending the Art Work talk on Tuesday, March 13: www.moma.org/c...
ART WORK with Carolee Schneemann is moderated by Kenneth White (Sarah Lawrence College), who has spoken and published widely on Schneemann, and edited the monograph, Unforgivable.
ART WORK is an ongoing series that hosts innovative artists who speak about the artistic process on special evenings at The New School’s Eugene Lang College. Students gain access to the intimate workings of some of the most influential artists practicing in the city today.
