I’ve been listening to this song for a about five years years now. Today I listened and I heard that lyric for the first time. I mean I really heard it and it blew me away, though he is completely heartbroken and he has this internal conflict he’s still happy she found love again and is happy and he was glad to play his part of being in her life for a while even though it was temporary. Utterly devastating,
Just sublime. A very underrated singer/songwriter. I hope Justin really does manage to play pub gigs when he's 80 years old. I'll definitely be there for that.
How can songs like these exist with such little recognition?! This song is an achingly brilliant open wound that is so honestly and authentically written that it's impossible not to feel the melody. As a songwriter myself I find it inspiring and disheartening at the same time that material this good can be as under the radar as it is. Justin, I so very sincerely hope you get the props you deserve for you work. Your absolutely brilliant!!
This performance is brilliantly beautiful. Justin's voice, lyrics and music have always been beyond brilliant. I fell in love when I first heard "Kiss this thing goodbye" in 89. I had never heard anything so powerful in all my life.I've been obsessed with Del Amitri and Justin ever since.
Have followed Justin for years from Del Amitri till now. He is in my opinion the best singer song writer the U.K. has ever produced and like many more he should have had much more acclaim. But he will say who gee's a fuck. This acoustic version of this song has to be one of his best ever. Awesome JC keep em coming mate.
This is a song we all wish we'd written. Completely emotional without the saccharin after taste. Beautiful, just beautiful. When you get a reaction like Chris Diffords is when you know you've written something special.
Since first hearing Justin Currie with Del Amitri I've always thought of him as the most underrated singer/songwriter I've ever heard. I'm so sad to hear of his health from a personal friend of his and only wish for the best for him.
WHAT IS LOVE FOR is the greatest break-up album of all time. It is raw and honest and heals the broken heart. I'm using it now many years after I bought it to get through my divorce.
it gets me that some people don't get Justin Currie, or Del Amitri. i hope to see the day when the fame and fortune come to greatly talented people like these. and not just to mediocre pop fads.
I totally get what you're saying as a fan for 30 years, but for me part of the appeal is that he's been just successful enough to believe in his ability, but not successful enough for it to screw him up. And for that I'm kind of grateful :D
I know I'm a bit late to the party with this comment but I watched a documentary about mtv. They wanted to use Del Amitri as a marketing band as they were just starting to get really famous. They said that if they refused they would exclude the band from their channel and the band would be forgotten. Obviously Justin told them to fuck off.
I saw this entire gig on the BBC. Currie, Difford and Hewerdine complimented each other perfectly. And the venue and the audience were the perfect size. It's rare to get such a perfect gig where everything comes together like that.
I must have listened to this song 1000 times this year !!! .... Music really can help you through tough times.... Says it all in 4.21 ...Perfection !!! ... Top Bloke and keep 'em coming :)
Chris Difford revealing that songwriters are the true romantics… one of many beautiful songs written by the incredible Justin Currie. Stunning… would bring a tear to a statue’s eye.
Justin's absolutely brilliant and very talented. I've always loved the Dels, truly great songs. I'm in my 60's now but regularly listen to all my Dels albums.
Saw Justin again this week...Gor Blimey; the writing remains incredibly strong and he certainly can wail, taking on songs of great vocal challenge and complexity throughout...and mostly 'to order'. The underestimated voice of a this old git's generation!
I would give anything to see Justin perform against any of the mainstream artists today or better yet on American Idol. His live performances are something to be proud of.
I was lucky enough to see JC on tour a few years ago in a tiny club in Phoenix AZ and he played this song. Smaller than the venue shown here. Amazing, personal, unforgettable. Hope to see him again sometime.
absolutely fantastic. I went to see Del Amitri a good while back in London. One of only two artists I've ever seen who could be playing the record, his voice is so good, and so full of emotion.
all i can say about justin currie and his music is "Brilliant" one of the best, if not the best in the biz. leaves me in awe everytime i hear him belt out a chorus.
what a brilliant lyric and melody combined this is a beautiful table turn on the traditional love song, just when you think you've heard them all Justin comes along and gives strength to the jilted - brilliant man!
A brilliant song sung by a brilliant singer/songwriter. It had the same effect on me as it had on the guy from Squeeze (was that Chris Diffird or Glen Tilbrook?) I too suffered an emotional break-up a while back and this song had me sobbing. Brilliantly performed. Well done Justin.
‘I was the interim, between nothingness and him’. This line is incredible. My god.

Chris is certainly not the first man to shed a tear from sound of Mr. Currie's voice.
It’s like honey being rubbed around your aching heart
A masterpiece
A work of art
Bloody magical❤
That is probably the perfect description of JC's songwriting. Thank you for your beautiful insight.

Finest songwriter Britain has produced in the last 30 years
One of many many great songs Mr Currie has written. Thanks 👍 . He's in a class of his own.

Del Amitri was, and still is one of my favorite bands just true music no gimmicks, dance routines or bells and whistles...... just pure talent
Yep...so true.
Just babies in strollers...or now, old men in wheelchairs!
Brings me to tears every time I listen to this as I’ve lost my True love of my life

I’m biased, but authenticity seems to be a common trait amongst Scottish bands. It’s all about the music. Nothing else matters as much.
All these years later and this song still kills me.
An absolute world class song from a world class talent and performer, Justin should be a National Treasure- but I think he is to most of us.
Andy White Spot on.

Scotlands pride Justin is a National Treasure
When we win Euro 2021 our team will be Scotland's pride.

I know just how Chris Difford feels. Justin just nails it here. It goes straight for the heart. Impossible not to be moved.
And when you follow it up with Sleep instead of teardrops in my eyes....oh man!
This would bring a tear to a glass eye. Outstanding.
Shut it peg-leg, lol!
I'm gonna steal that saying now. Thank you.
I have been watching this over and over again this past week, and it continues to make me cry. A beautiful, beautiful song.
Yes same its a beautiful song sung apsulutely perfect him and dela mitri should more famous than what they are brilliant
Justin Currie. One of scotlands most underrated song writer/singers .(in my opinion)
WHAT IS LOVE FOR is the greatest break-up album of all time. It is raw and honest and heals the broken heart. I'm using it now many years after I bought it to get through my divorce.
What a song and what a performance.
The people that dislike this need a good slap
I love the way Justin just says "Sorry mate" in a slightly embarrassed tone after Difford's gushing.
He is truly an amazing songwriter.....and he delivers.
it gets me that some people don't get Justin Currie, or Del Amitri. i hope to see the day when the fame and fortune come to greatly talented people like these. and not just to mediocre pop fads.
I love the songs of him and the former band, Justin's just fantastic at playing and writing music💙💙💙
I totally get what you're saying as a fan for 30 years, but for me part of the appeal is that he's been just successful enough to believe in his ability, but not successful enough for it to screw him up. And for that I'm kind of grateful :D
nick cooper I saw these guys when they first set out and still regard their music as timeless. They are and have always been a talented band.
I agree. I just feel fortunate that I did discover him and the band way back and have been enjoying the songs for so long.
I saw this entire gig on the BBC. Currie, Difford and Hewerdine complimented each other perfectly. And the venue and the audience were the perfect size. It's rare to get such a perfect gig where everything comes together like that.
Absolutely Brilliant Song......and as usual Justin Currie's lyrics are spot on.........
I must have listened to this song 1000 times this year !!! .... Music really can help you through tough times.... Says it all in 4.21 ...Perfection !!! ... Top Bloke and keep 'em coming :)
Haha I'm hearing ya its just one of those songs just done perfectly brilliant
Chris Difford revealing that songwriters are the true romantics… one of many beautiful songs written by the incredible Justin Currie. Stunning… would bring a tear to a statue’s eye.
Just so incredible .. very underestimated songwriter
I hear this track today out of nowhere, found the album and pressed buy now.
It's that good
I remember watching this programme. He was in a class of his own that night (and every other).
Justin is truely an artist. He brings his songs to life. Love the man, love the music.
This is definately the best version on the guitar! An absolutely brilliant singer songwriter.
seriously people, the guys amazing. His acoustic renditions are chilling !
simply great....one voice, one guitar. Proves what a great song this is.....pure emotion.

One of the most beautiful loves songs ever written.
This shows exactly how much a song, melody or lyric can get you right in the stomach.
His lyrics are simply moments in everyone's life.
This is the best version of this song. I always wonder why it was done on piano in the first place.
One of my favourite tracks of all time
Justin's absolutely brilliant and very talented. I've always loved the Dels, truly great songs. I'm in my 60's now but regularly listen to all my Dels albums.
This song got me through a particularly hard break up. still listening to it today to remind me I'm a better person for it.
So very heartfelt, honest, and strong....what a poet!
What an amazing performance vocally, the subtleties were just achingly beautiful.
Good god, that was beautiful. I am blown away.
Chris Difford's face, wrenches my heart. The memories, the similarity between Justin's voice and Glenn Tilbrook...I would be in tears too.
Utter perfection. It just does not get any better than this. His album is sensational.
Heart melting.
I love him and this song is perfect
RUclips needs a LOVE button specifically just for this song!
Saw Justin at Liverpool acoustic set, fantastic! Echo below one of the best singer songwriters around. keep it coming.
What a beautiful song. And Chris Difford close to tears. How moving is that?.....
Chris's reaction to this is just beautiful, i think we all feel the same. Music is so powerfull. ❤

I would give anything to see Justin perform against any of the mainstream artists today or better yet on American Idol. His live performances are something to be proud of.
What a performance, extraordinary, and a little draining - but pure alchemy. Fantastic. Poor Chris Difford!
Justin is a master songwriter.
Gets me as much today as it did the first time....what a beautiful song....the gentleman at the end sums it up perfectly.
Fabulous version and what a magical voice. Like Chris Difford at the end, I was in tears as well.

Justin, you are such a talented writer & performer. You touch the heart in such a fundamental way with your songs. Never stop.
I was lucky enough to see JC on tour a few years ago in a tiny club in Phoenix AZ and he played this song. Smaller than the venue shown here. Amazing, personal, unforgettable. Hope to see him again sometime.

Just can't get enough of this one, everything about it is great. The tone is perfection.

Why can't I like this more than once?!!!
the song hits me hard every time even if it in my case is less about loss and more about the endless emptiness.....

This guy just always hits The nail on the head xx
Hard to pick a favourite Justin song, but this is up there. Fantastic songwriter.
