"I will never live up to that intro, I'm done"
- Says the person who would proceed take over CR and Dimension 20 simultaneously
Matt Colville had the best advice on prep I ever heard: "Be honest with yourself and figure out what you are bad at improvising. Prep that. Don't prep the stuff you can improvise."
Yep! Seriously good advice. Has he ever been on this show? Would love to see that.
I love how prophetic the title "see me in six months" turned out to be here. We will see you! Everywhere! Happy summer of Aabria!!
(Six months, eight, nine, whatever, shhh.)
Aabria is simply brilliant. What a great voice to have in the community 👏🏼
I'm so glad Dimension 20 introduced me to Aabria. I can't wait to see where she goes cus she's gonna go far.
RIGHT?! I got a subscription to dropout because Aabria was about to start Burrow’s End! I was soooooo stoked. I love Watership Down and Secret of NIMH (Watership is on my top five, both are on my top ten.) and absolutely understood the whimsical/Wind in the Willows meets darkness/Redwall/Plague Dogs everything is beautiful and SO fucked up direction a story will go in if there are adorable talking animals.
My only wish for it was that they had been given just a smidge more time, maybe one or two more episodes or something. It was SO fast and the implications of the Phoebe of it all…..like you NEED to talk about that. Do they try to hide it from humanity forever? Are they honest about what happened to Dr W and that ALL of the stoats can apparently do that to ANY living being….Jesus Christ.
@@rachelgura3567 that's so cool to hear that Burrow's End was EXACTLY someone else's jam haha and totally agreed, it absolutely deserved more run time. I'm very grateful for what we got but a few more eps to explore the ending would've been great. Although maybe I just wanted it to never end lol tough to say
I could listen to these two talk for days
12:38 Every damn time, the reminder that Brennan was home-schooled sneaks up on me and beats me up in a dark alley.
@yes Depends on the home
Let me know if you ever wanna talk. I'd love to hear your view on life.
@yes This is absolutely the opposite of my experience with homeschooled kids. Usually homeschooled people, in my experience, are sheltered and insular because they were homeschooled to protect them from the world.
@@lovesmasher there's definitely a variety of reasons to homeschool, but as a homeschooled kid myself, I have to agree. Many parents who homeschool do so because they reject society and sometimes even want to control their children's experience.
PC's: _"We adopt this NPC. You do this voice forever!"_
Brennan: "I'm damned."
Gilear: "Don't worry. It only gets worse from here."
38:07 And now I know why Lou was so familiar with "Brannan's Bird Facts" when Evan Kelmp came into the picture. I love that this comes out in a conversation with Aabria because it turns it into such foreshadowing.
"The PC can be like we adopt this dude, now you do this voice forever. And I'm like... I'm damned.I'm a damned soul and now this is my life.
.
.
.
Shout out Gilear."
I was almost literally flipping my chair" :'D
Aabria nailed exactly how I feel - the moment I heard of D&D I was like "well shit this is who I am now"
Same.
They’re such nerds they’re so happy nerding out aww
aabria seems like such a wonderful person and DM. really looking forward to what she does in EXU
Aabria MUST teach me how to run a musical RPG episode. it is very important to who i am as a person!
The title was very prophetic :> And it aged like a mighty fine wine, considering all the projects Aabria is involved with. Awesome episode with an awesome person! :D
Aabria, i don't need 6 months. It took me 2 seconds in the trailer to fell in love with you
I'm so grateful for what Brennan said about ADHD and players being on their devices.
Unless I'm actively figuring out strategy, rolling dice, or roleplaying, I will be busying myself. With my phone, with browsing websites on my side of the call, etc, but not because I'm disinterested. It's because I need to busy my brain so it can still pay attention to what is happening. Without the additional input, I'm understimulated.
ABSOLUTELY! My favorite storyteller/GM never gave any of us shit for being on our phone/laptop. We played once a week for literally all day on Saturday beginning at noon abnd no shit going until 2 am or later. That’s a LONG fuckin time and would be horrific if the Dm was a tight ass about what we did when it wasn’t our turn. We played the shit out of our turns, often made it a point to incorporate the other PCs during, often spent many hours during the week collaborating with the other PCs, and were all massively neurodivergent AuDHD. It was the most committed and talented group and Storyteller I had the privilege to play with, high emotions, high intensity AF.
So we would be on the phones/laptop. One of us had a full video game going on his laptopI(sound off of course). It was a way to unwind, to think, and recover from a turn that may have lasted an hour or more, may have been very intense emotionally, etc.
Whoa! The title this time around, I see what you did there!!! Rewatching to learn a little more about you!!!
Aabria literally dropped this timebomb on us... "See me in six months" for voices and now here she is killin it. Great dedication and an amazing interview!
I'm not even finished with this, but so far I've been enjoying this so much and the advice is so sound! Especially the fact of how DMs and players can worldbuild together
Where do you see yourself in six months?
Aabria: Fucking Everywhere!
Man, I didn't know this was a dm chat but their energy and temperament kept me an hour in and I have to go to sleep.
I loved this -- thank you for such a terrific, insightful, and kind conversation about remote DMing and improv. I'm looking forward to DMing one day (although I'm also terrified). Can't wait to see Aabria DM for ExU!
As a big fan, getting hit with the follow up punch of Aabria taking the helm on Misfits & Magic absolutely slaps hard.
54:55 A trigger, like when the party finds a dead body on a stone slab, something pretty pedestrian for a D&D game, but the game is taking place a week after one of the players had to identify his dad's body at the morgue.
Someone needs to get a Abria playlist set up to watch their stuff.
Rewatching this after the new season reveal ♥️
Oh man, I am so pumped! I could hardly think of a better person to put in the big chair as a guest DM than Aabria!
i saw on twitter the title see you in 6 months was an accidental reference because 6 months after this episode aired they all sat down to play the new season for the first time
Timestamps:
1:08:44 - "Oh no, my long lost ex"
1:24:40 - This town sure has structures in it
1:29:42 - It's a full genie scenario
1:29:56 - Shoutout Gilear
I've been DMing for ~3 years (remote and in-person) and another +1 year back in 2014, and have been a player for 11 years...and I still learned a ton of useful tidbits here. Thank you!
AUGH SHES SO ANIMATED I LOVE IT I don’t think I ever felt intimidated by someone just being so nice and animated but also like impressed sort of intimidated
44:23 "maybe you're not where you hoped to be but you're farther than where you started so just keep going" so much yes, thank you
Losing my mind over 38:30 and the foreshadowing of “Bird Facts”
i came here straight from finishing exu calamity. i could watch these two do dnd at each other for the rest of my life.
I had a player struggle at one point. Through his out of character, "Is there anyways to get out of this? IF we keep fighting they die, and one of us dies." I offered, 'you don't know this person, why they are here or if it affects you, this could be a misunderstanding.' and he deescalated the situation himself. Learning that sometimes, enemies can become friends. They can be allies even later. It's a staple in the campaign. You never know who you meet may end up being at another time.
46:38 Omg, this. So much of this.
So often I hear about DMs being paranoid or disheartened because their players are on their phones or doing something else during a game. But that’s not always a universal indication that they’re checked out or bored.
As someone with minor adhd, I actually focus better when I have multiple things to focus on. Sometimes I need something else to do to keep myself getting distracted.
This had so many good elements, Aabria is fantastic, and the who section on how to narrate Failures is fantastic, this will change how I portray some things for some characters for sure.
D&D utilizing BDSM etiquette, you love to see it. 56:39
Aabria is so kick ass, I'm really happy this episode got made! now to watch it...
Keep doing what you're doing gang! Love all of it and you guys.
"cleric in the corner" is totally the tittle of my next Paul Simon-esque song
Love Aabria!
I've been on an Aabria kick since the most recent episode of The Unleashed, she's like a perfect DM!
My favorite DMs!!! Keep rockin!!!
23:04 Flashforward to "A Court of Fey and Flowers" where Aabria is literally the master of social consequence.
More Aabria! This was hilarious!
Their improv'd ex/x mini-scene was amazing.
For anyone interested in what they said about establishing motivations and relationships in character creation / Session 0:
Check out how Powered By The Apocalypse and/or Forged In The Dark games do exactly that!
(They've got mechanics and prompts that you could very easily port over to any other system, and they do a LOT of great work guiding new GMs and players on HOW to do these things.)
oh Aabria you wait til you have to play Citizen Doctor Abraham Mehermblur's imp called Paddles
1:06:58 - it's confirmed folks, Aabria is a dragon.
The archer shooting the moon with an arrow sounds a LOT like old myths and legends. A giant wolf is chained w/ a magick chain made of the sound of kitty footsteps at night, a single breath of a fish, mountain roots, bird spits, sinew of bear - Coyote accidentally creates death - on and on. SO when character get to level 17 and are Demigods functionally & some of the stuff they do will effect the world in bonkers way sometimes.
Six months later gonna check this out as requested
shoutout Gilear!!
“My ex! What are you doing here?” One time, one of the minibosses in a campaign I was playing in was my character's ex. It was dope.
Well, we're sure seeing her in six months!!
Her foretelling powers are all over the internet 44:12
Aabria Critical Role HYPE
The movie Brennan was looking for was Die Hard. A classic film that goes from action to comedy to romance is Die Hard. You were looking for Die Hard. I got chu bud.
I'm gonna be real here for a second dimension20. You can't lie to me. I know you are all having a blast with misfits and magic. I too am also having a blast with this series. If I understand this correctly, and I obviously speak for the entire internet, simply the next step would be to do a season 2. Now I don't have that much power, it came to me long ago, just a tickle of eldritch cosmos festering is the rungs of my muddled brain demanding for another season. I'm not one to argue with typical eldritch horrors so I strongly suggest dimension20 takes upon cthulus will. Just saying
Season two became the Christmas special
Which just means we need a season 3 😊
She knew. She jas yaken control of ever show. Tooo powerfulwaaahahaha
1:15:45: Aabria: "Whoop, here's my hyperfocus letting me know I'm going to DM now..."
44:12 exactly what happened to me after a preview of Magic and Misfits. FFFFFFF
Aabria FOR er-rverrrrr
kickstarter to get a comic book adaptation of the mythical home game
Existence! Yay.
I first saw Aabria first time in EXU on critical role… and I fell for her DM style immediately
Shout out to "The Sting"
SHE IS SOOOO FUCKING GOOD LOVE HER
The thing about the arrows vs wish is how I do a lot of balance. If the wizard says I wish arrows hit these locations it's not even a full power wish it's pretty weak compared to some wishes.
Does this new spell I added do more than a raging barbarian can in a round
I didn’t even think of that, using wish in combination of those neat arrows. Very cool idea.
Every time I hear Brennan say bitch I have a moment of cognitive dissonance, he's too wholesome it doesn't make sense that he even knows that word. To be clear tho I've only heard it twice, once as Queen Titania and once just now in reference to an in game nickname. I don't think I ever heard him say it in Leviathan but he might've said it as an npc and he was just so in character that I didn't attribute it to him
Wow this girl is awesome I'm a little confused about what she meant around the 25:00 mark . . . But I'm the same, I used to love action . But if I ever played a game of D&D I'd be all about that role play. It just seems so kool to play a character. Your own character ya know?
I want to watch your d&d show but I can't afford the $5 for dropout! I would watch half an hour of commercials per episode to be able to watch it free!!!
Lots of free episodes on their RUclips
@@zbuchholz10 there is no end of the blood keep no season three of adventuring academy or any of the other stuff. I have watched all of the ones that are out but seeing the "lets talk about how cool the episode that's behind a pay wall is/was" makes me upset.
@@evilcanofdrpepper Bloodkeep is actually only 6 episodes. All of it is on RUclips.
@@evilcanofdrpepper artists and creative people have to make money too, unfortunately capitalism makes us do things like this.
Dnd players will understand. Period
All that is needed to (re)-watch this video as many times as you want, is an understanding of cadence. People changing the way they speak because they are trying to give a specific meaning to a specific phrase or word. Or even an entire story.
I wanna shoot the moon now...
58:28 aabria def is talking about matt's gunslinger getting a crit at level 18...tbf it is o.p. as shit.
whoa she has boxxy energy!
player involvement rules. you should play Cypher Systems
Main reason I as a diehard actor player and GM leave a group. characters that do not fit into the world.
Hello one and aaaalllll
Why is nerfing something to lower its abilities or make it worse? I love nerf guns. They make everything better. Nerfing something should be to make it fun/awesome
You use a nerf gun, I use a real one. Later we can compare which one of us got shafted by inferior equipment.
You're "nerfing" someone because you're replacing their regular bullets with nerf bullets.
Brennan, that haircut is a war crime
Counterpoint: nah
Another counterpoint: Brennan is a badass bitch and can wear his hair how he wants :3
@@maxime5307 I didn't say he couldn't. Brennan is a grown-ass man and can wear his hair however he pleases.
Relatedly, I am also within my rights to observe that this makes him look like two random members of Fall Out Boy did the Fusion Dance.
@@stolisomancer “I am within my rights to unprompted tell people whom I don’t know, that I think they look bad”. Pretty entitled, aren’t you?
Hi
Fantasy sports is just D&D for jocks, change my mind.
Oh absolutely. And most of the folks i know who play like fantasy football are D&D nerds too. Also the have something called like murderball or something, and it’s fantasy races like orcs and shit who make up the murderball team thats like really fucked up football meet 40k. Really bonkers.
Wish you guys used good mics for this series.
Buy them and send them to their homes, then.
