The Blue Bottle Tree site recommends using Helmar Crystal Kote Matte spray in place of the PYM 2. PYM 2 was unavailable in Australia so they did testing to try to find something else that was similar and the matte worked really well for them.
Currently, even at the Helmar site, this product is "out of stock" even though they do have a notify me button so they must be intending to have some in the future.
@@fawnwolfe7355 I just went to both sites. Oriental has glossy-am looking for matte-and art source shows no product with "Helmar crystal kote" as the search. But thanks for knowing possible sources.
This polymer medium is unlimited. The different art mediums that be used on this product seems to be unlimited as well. I've used alcholo inks, chalks, soap bubbles, cracked and I've seen the pencils at Michael's. Keep on teaching. You've made me a believer. NEXT😊
I use a very fine sponge to dab a very light coat of liquid clay onto the surface to seal in paint/pastel/pencil. This is a good replacement for the sealer for me.
B, that is good as a final coat, the sealer offers separation in pencil layers and liquid doesn’t perform well for that. But, glad you mentioned it! 😊❤️🎉
Hi Donna! I did some research online and found 4 possibilities (not in order of priority). I have not personally tried these, but I recently purchased Dorland's so maybe I'll give it a try. Anyway, they are: * Rustoleum Chalked Protective Topcoat Clear (matte or gloss)
I love this! I use colored pencil on copper but I never thought about trying it on the polymer clay. I buy metal and tools for silversmithing from Rio Grande. They sell a high quality lacquer that I have used on polymer clay and it doesn't make it sticky. It's not a spray, it's the kind you brush on. But you can water it down about 50/50 and it makes a nice light coating to protect the surface without being goopy or thick.
Everything that u do is amazing❣️ Also, I got my shipment today of the Black Out Clay & the Repel Gel I can’t wait to use it tomorrow! Thank you!! Ok I couldn’t wait until tomorrow I had to try alittle blackout WOW AMAZING!!! I used 1.5oz of scrap clay whites black greens golds 1.2grams of blackout Voilà BLACK CLAY!!! Hi Donna, my DH (darling husband) did the experiment for me in Nov, '21. Says so in my notebook for clay. He tried Duplicolor Gloss which must be US-based as the spelling of colour is incorrect, lol. Also, Mr Hobby Gloss and Matt sprays. All 3 were terrific and none melted the clay. The samples in my book are as perfect as when he did them for me. Hope this helps. I'm happy to email you pics of the cans, if you want xxx
@@DonnaKatoArt You wouldn't believe how stoked I am that I could help, Donna. I admire your body of work immensely! I pour over the 3 of your books that I have all the time and I thank you for your inspiration. You have given me the confidence to try techniques that I thought were complicated and out of reach. I'm very much enjoying your tutorials on RUclips. Will definitely be paying for your classes when you get them organized. The matte is definitely the best. How goes the prep for moving? Or have you settled in already?
Hi Donna. Happy Saturday!... Just wanted to take a second to report back to you about the Minwax spray... I'm happy to tell you that it worked!... I tried it on cured black clay. I did the pencil method and sprayed on a very light coat a total of 3 times. Zero problem. Zero effect on the clay... I used Miniwax water based Polycrylic in a clear satin finish and Prismacolor pencils. I hope this helps in some way! Have a great weekend. ❤
Thank you so much again Donna for another fabulous technique 💜 I'm super thankful for the wealth of knowledge you share x absolutely loving every minute 💜
Thank you! I have a couple of boxes with pencils which I used for drawing mandalas. Mostly soft and "creamy" ones (but no Carandache😒) . Anyway, I will give it a try! No PYM II, either but I'm sure the great community will come up with something equally helpful!❤
Thanks again for another fantastic and informative video! I have several Inro blanks I was actually hoping to use pencils on but wasn't sure how to seal. I have ONE can of PYM and I will cry when it's gone. The smell reminds me of the ceramic studio (plaster molds) my mom worked at in the 80s. I wanna say what they would spray seal on acrylic painted bisque because not everything was glazed. But definitely not a thick lacquer, but that's based in what remaining childhood decor items I still have in a box somewhere in a closet. 😂
I am going to show this tutorial to every person who raised an eyebrow at me when I spent HUNDREDS of dollars on really nice pencils during my very short lived "adult coloring phase." LOL... As for sealer: Have you tried Minwax water based polyurethane? I use it all the time on cured clay. It does not damage the clay... And NOW you must teach us how to make the box AND that ring you always have on your right hand...😅😁😁😁 Thank you for yet another fun and amazing video! ❤
@@DonnaKatoArt The Minwax does come in aerosol form. I have the brush on kind though.... Do you think aerosol form changes its chemical make up so it won't be the same as the brush on type? I wonder!... I'm going to get a spray can of it this weekend and try it. I'll let you know what happens... The brush on version is totally fine though. That I know for sure... Stay tuned! 😁
@@tanyanastasi243 great, Tanya! I like the spray because this technique benefits from light, misty, spray. I spray many iNtermediate coats, then heavier at the end!
@@DonnaKatoArt I totally understand. Your tutorial makes complete sense as to why just the fine mist of a coating is needed... I will test the entire pencil technique with the Minwax spray and will give you a full report. 😁😁😁💖
I was just looking through the tutorials and you did do a box tutorial about a year ago. Is that the same box??... But what I was really looking for was a color mixing video. I could swear you made one that I saw briefly... It was the hole punch method or shape cutter method. Not the one using the tablet. Do you remember which video has that color mixing lesson in it?
I _adore_ my CD Luminance pencils - I'd never have dreamt of using them on polymer clay! This is a fabulous technique Donna - thanks for sharing it with us. Given the manufacturer has now retired, a gracious thing to do would be to make their formula open access - so as someone else can take up the mantle. I'm in the UK, so wonder if some bright spark here with a chemical bent will take a look at the formula for PYMII and say _"Oh, what you need is anything with XYZ in it..."_ I shall ask around this week and email you if I get a useful response! 🤗

I think for some pieces, white would be better when the “canvas” you want is white. I have drawn bird heads on colored clay, blended green background, blue bird head, rather than white. The pencils don’t behave on clay the way they do on paper and if you begin with a colored base, you can deepen and highlight with ease. Good question, Brittany!😊❤️
