Why do you take a bear canister with you? I thought it's not required on the CDT?

There are bears along the majority of the CDT but it’s only required in the San Juan Forest, Rocky Mountain NP, Glacier and I believe the Tetons as well. It was more for the bears safety but actually decided to leave it behind, just going to hang my food.
