I think it’s perfectly fine to criticize artists work, especially when they’re massive like he is, but people don’t think about how devastating it can be to half thousands of comments critiquing your art all at once. If thousands of people went up to someone irl to critique their drawings, they would likely cry. Also, fully understand why someone wouldn’t recognize sarcasm (esspecially online), that’s why so many people use tone indicators in tweets, replies, I’ve even seen people use tone indicators in their videos because sometimes it’s just hard to read someone’s intentions. Loved the video by the way, I hadn’t heard about this so I probably would’ve never known about it if it weren’t for you /genuine

Bro, Ellie is a little girl, you don't need to be attracted to her 💀Sounds more like someone is trying to justify his Disney princess same face syndrome with even more sus "s3x appeal of a little girl" 👀 reasoning. Because truly great artists are aware of variety and imperfections especially among their focus of attraction, as they spend most time staring at and analyzing it, which would be "females" in Sam's case. But even putting aside the fact that Joel looks like Pedro Pascal (perhaps younger, but still looks like him) while Ella looks nothing like Bella, the way he drew them both makes it look like two different artists drew them. There is nothing wrong with the way he draws women, they are drawn very beautifully and I like the fact that even if he draws pretty women they aren’t sexualised. But! It’s kinda sad that he drew Pedro Pascal just like how he looks whereas the girl looks nothing like the reference image. That’s what’s off- (also, okay let’s say it’s fine for him to not draw the girl like the reference imagine but atleast make her look like a GIRL, but instead she looks too mature?)
And the fact is, he CAN draw them differently, he has made many videos where he has tried to get out of his same face syndrome so it’s not like he CAN’T draw the girl more like the reference imagine, he just CHOSE not to. The final result of the art makes it seem like two different art styles which also seems weird. Also he has a similar art style in the way he draws both men AND women, which shows the way he drew pedro pascal more like the reference image and not like his usual style of men means he CHOSE not to draw it in his style. Which seems unfair to me.

As someone who’s trying to grow a business with my art
Yes I agree critique is necessary, however not everyone can handle certain criticism it’s different for everyone
    Here’s some examples though
For me, im very well aware of what I need to work on and improve upon, so I don’t like seeing criticism unless it’s just someone giving me a helpful tip on how to improve in that part of my struggle.
I have a learning disability so I have to keep searching on how others do something or breakdown things into shapes until I find one that makes any sense to me.
Unfortunately even if it’s titled EASY TIPS ON DRAWING BODY TYPES I still don’t understand what they are teaching. It’s a struggle and I wish things came easier to me.
Aside from that the other example is, I have a friend whose VERY new to art. Both adults and she knows she has a long way to go. Currently she’s been taking poses from Pinterest and tracing the pose the everything else on her own. Tracing is a good skill to have so I’m not gonna tell her to stop. I mean, she draws in her phone man.
Anyway I get the “being new to sharing art online” and not understanding certain untold rules. Most artists do things like trace poses and use bases without credit cause they don’t understand the need for credit.
Poses off the internet is one thing but bases are another, and it can be hard. Find the og creator of the base you found.
Anyway, my friend got a comment about how it’s obvious she traced and that she should try drawing something on their own. She’s not confident enough to yet, but shes working on it.
Anyway it really hurt her and made her wanna quit drawing. I advised her this stuff happens and you can’t avoid it. But she is struggling with confidence in improving, she really wants to learn how to draw so she can draw her characters, any advice?
Granted it’s hard drawing something on your phone, thinking about having her draw on paper till she can get a tablet so she can learn to draw more comfortably

Tbh I have zero problem with this as I'm a woman with same face syndrome in my art. I unapologetically like drawing pages and pages of beautiful men. If I draw fanart of a guy and girl, I tend make the male character more idealized and women/girl hyper realistic (with features that other's might consider flaws), because I personally enjoy looking at aesthetically pleasing male characters, and am just more "meh" whatever about images of women...Artists are always going to draw what they like to look at. But I've also seen a lot of other artists go with the unspoken rule of "make your character attractive" in order to capture more of your audience's attention. Maybe all the noise/opinions from his fans has something to do with his changed art style, such as all of a sudden putting in more than usual rendering time in the oc's bosom, etc. But when it all boils down to it....Would you draw a completely different character and say they're "Naruto Uzumaki"? I just wish he showed more representation for Bella like he did Pedro ):

That opinion about comment sections was kinda a miss to me. Yeah, rationally you can't really stop people from criticizing online, but unless it's constructive; you _can_ hold them accountable. I don't just want to go "eet eez wat eet eez" and water it down to just "internet being internet smh", because there's still this thing called manners even in a social media setting. It reflects on your character - and yeah, ik some of ya'll be scoffing. How naïve of me to wish us be more polite online "Yea I ain't doing that." Completely disregarding consequences because we've turned pessimistic and lost empathy, and we use that to justify hurting other people. Because "what have they done for us?" and you know the answer to that? Nothing. So how exactly how do they deserve unwarranted hate when they've done nothing to you?
Even if this small movement of "non-conformity towards casual rudeness in commenting on the internet" won't change much, I'll still do it. Because believe it or not, that kind of attitude online _can_ cross over offline, sometimes so minuscule you don't even notice the change. But it happens. I've seen it happen to my sibling. The "unironically" turns ironic and real. And in the end they don't even see it a bad thing, they're in one opinion with the masses, after all. And I'm not one of those "Don't follow the sheeples!" people. God they're horrible too.
Thank you for listening to my ted talk.

when talking about critique, i believe we have to differentiate: One can criticize the work on a technical level, one can criticize the decisions behind a work, or one can criticize the person creating the work. The first is obviously legitimate, the second one I would say has good arguments for and against, but the third is absolutely off limits, no matter who is behind the work. especially when the words thrown around are pretty serious accusations.

So instead of coming to the table to have a real discussion about why he cartoonified the girl but actually drew the man - he made a sarcastic joke about pretending to be sexiest? Honestly responding to real criticism with sarcasm is in itself rude. Pretending to be sexiest or racists as a form of humor (Kooleen) is not funny and is the oldest trick in the book on “how to say racist things and get away with it: step one say relax I was just joking”. I was feeling very off about following Sam given his relationship and continued support of Kooleen but this just convinced me to leave the fan wagon. You can’t respond respectfully to a genuine critique about turning women into caricatures when you don’t do the same to men; by being a sarcastic douche.

    • @janaiyla
      @janaiyla 10 месяцев назад +18

He was accused of being misogynistic for drawing a female in his art style, I’d make a mockery out of the accusation as well. It’s unrealistic to expect people to respond in the way you think they ought to, because people are beautifully different and no one should have to conform to your ideologies. Our differences is our humanity. Some people, like Sam, use humor as a coping mechanism or a deflection. You may think this is ‘immature’ or ‘wrong’ but your standards are not God’s moral law. Accusing someone of misogyny is not critique. Being self-righteous and dehumanizing people for their differences, their flaws, their ignorance, and/or their mistakes is one of the most inhuman and hypocritical things you can do. You expect a man to abandon his friendship with a person because of an ignorant comment she made; people are imperfect, including you, imagine if someone left you every time you made a mistake. We, as imperfect people, will always make mistakes even when we have good intentions. Stop thinking the worse of people, especially when you’ve probably done far worse than he has in his life. Stop turning your nose up at people just because they did something you don’t like, instead… try extending grace and kindness to people.

    • @Daisiest
      @Daisiest 10 месяцев назад +4

Ah, you're the type of people who see racism even in a rain drop? Chill out and get some fresh air.
First of all, there are many comments that explain the probable explanation for why these faces are different. He mostly draws girls which is as fine as when girls drawing girls only or boys only, and perhaps for him it's hard to adapt his style for male characters, because surprise surprise it's possible even if you've been drawing for many years.
Second of all, people can respond as they want. A lot of people use humor especially in tense situations because it's easier for them this way to defuse the situation, to show that they didnt have any ill intentions etc. You can't judge a person based on a single speech without knowing him personally, you definitely can't throw racist accusations or call a person names just because he's not behaving according to your book.
And also he made a whole video about the kooleen controversy, he didn't even defend her, he analyzed the problem and gave his own opinion. And as they seem to know each other very well, perhaps she's not a bad person, and he knows real her and you know people make mistakes, and a single mistake doesn't turn a person immediately into an evil being. If you gonna unfriend your friends every time they make a mistake without letting them grow and learn from it, then you're just toxic and will have no friends in the end of the day.
And learn the meaning of caricatures because rn you just sound as a chronically offended hater.

As many people pinpointed here he draws same face for all his female character in a style he likes, as if hes the only one who does. And perhaps drawing different faces is hard for him due to the fact that he draws the same face always. People really jump to judging and cancelling instead of trying to think why it is like that. Fine art + digital media applied arts student here, Sam DOES have same face syndrome.
Look, at the very beginning of his career he did try to evolve as an artist, but rn he found a following that keeps seeing his content for exactly what he offers, so he just does not go further, artistically speaking. Sargent did have a style, Sargent painted thousands of portraits, each one different, still kept the essence of the individual. Sam DID have a style, but he has repeated the same exact methodology on each 'artwork' to an extent that it won't even serve his creativity no more. If you differenciate a character of his, especially girls, it's for their clothing or hair, certainly not his facial features. And hey, there's hundreds of artists who use a 'same face figure' in their arts out there, even gallery artists, but THEY DO HAVE A CONCEPTUAL PURPOSE. Even the most famous mangakas and japanese animation studios use apparently 'same faced templates' and STILL we are PERFECTLY able to clearly distinguish characters even if just shown the face. See what I mean?
I wouldn't be saying this if I hadn't painted digitally myself, but I've been doing it for YEARS, learning and working hand by hand with the most important digital artists of today's art industry, and I KNOW how easy it is to fall in the trap of always following the same 'routines': you render skin in these four steps with a non variant colour palette, you paint hair with this other specific brush, then you apply a textured pattern brush in this other parts of the portrait. It's a trap. And Sam fell as soon as he got fame. A shame, honestly, because that's what clearly states if he's an artist or just a creative dude who found a formula for gaining money through digital art and won't really try to have artistic growth...
That said, there's hundreds of other RUclips artists who are more centered in the learning/teaching community and not in the spectacle/content/'lets be trendy' side of YT. Sam could have been of of the first, sadly he chose the latter...

  • @Petrichorus-
    @Petrichorus- 10 месяцев назад +3

Yeah, this is a problem with the art community in general. Everyone likes to draw pretty people, but in plenty of feature films or art that the general public is exposed to, generally male characters are allowed to be more physically “unattractive” than women. Almost every woman or girl is designed as pretty, because consciously or not, society values people, ESPECIALLY women, by their looks. This isn’t a Sam unique problem, it’s a problematic aspect of animation and art in general to only want to depict pretty people, and to only depict “flawed” and “real” people as men. It’s why pissy gamers get upset when female characters who are still attractive have SLIGHTLY LESS conventional appeal.

    • @Petrichorus-

Well, I get the impression that he gives the audience what they want. How often do you see other artists with the same technical level, but drawing something other than "pretty girls" and being unpopular because of it? I suspect he does this strategically, and hey, everyone needs to pay the bills with ads and followers.
Even publishers and studios seem to be prioritizing artists with huge followings and ignoring their portfolio/skills (seeing this myself at the agency, yup, I'm an artist). They're changing their hiring practices. Now, it's about finding someone somewhat compatible with the product who also has a massive follower base. The portfolio seems to be dropping to third priority.
We, the "unpopular artists", are getting screwed. (Tried the "pretty girl" route myself - fake Instagram account, exploded in a week. More followers in that week than all my original account's years combined. So disillusioned, I shut them both down. I'm so fed up with social media that I'm just dealing with publishers directly. I'll try the social thing later again...)

7 months late and it doesn't matter now I guess, but my 2 cents is that I don't think he was necessarily trying to change Bella Ramsey's face, so much as he just reverted to a process that he was familiar with, which produced a result that he's accustomed to. And he didn't do it with Pedro Pascal's face because the process doesn't work nearly as well on men's faces. As Sam has admitted before, he's not good at drawing men's faces. And if I remember the video where he did this pic, he relied more heavily on the reference for Pedro's face because he was deliberately getting outside of his same face syndrome comfort zone.
I think criticisms are fine, and his art style is not without limitations, but I don't think the accusation that he doesn't like Bella Ramsey's face was necessarily a fair one.

  • @BunnyGxre

This drama was annoying when it got out especially because of how people tried to make it seem like Sam was some sort of woman hater for drawing Bella Ramsey in a stylized manner, and my interpretation of this was that he stylized her because he is better at stylizing women. He usually has to study men when drawing them so it makes sense that Pedro looks more photo accurate… because he was probably looking at photos, and not looking at many photos of Bella because he was confident in his ability to draw women. Just a little arrogance, but a healthy amount because his art is amazing and if I drew like him I’d probably be up on my skills too 😅

Art is a form of expression, of having fun and yeah, it can have a discourse, but trying to get a discourse of misoginy out of a piece that is meant to be done just for fun and in the artist's style because they're more used to drawing women in it is just... why. Why is it so funny. Why did I laugh. This is a drama video. What is going on. Why is it so high quality. Why is it so… GOOD? And why does it have 3.5k views? And… why does Ludwig get 173k views in 7 hours for speaking loudly to a microphone for 57 seconds about nonsense? I don’t know. This is better.
    This is fine.

I like Sam and his art but even I was like ‘is this video hoping to be about his same face syndrome?’ without even knowing what this controversy was. I agree the piece looks weird with the two characters being drawn/stylised so differently. It’s good to know Sam does recognise and wants to work on the same face syndrome though. I like seeing his art in my feed and his videos, and I love his use of colour and lighting.
I don’t think he needed hash criticism for this, but people pointing out that its a bit jarring to look at and bringing up the hate that Bella got and how him putting in the effort would matter for this because of that as well, is fair. Unfortunately reposting that comment was maybe a bad idea because it was not obvious that it was sarcastic to those who aren’t familiar with Sams online presence. Regardless I Cant wait to continue to see him grow.

He mostly draws only women, so he probably drew Joel from reference. It happens to artists that only draw humans and suddenly they need to draw an animal, so they use reference and then you have stylized humans next to realistic animals. I think it's odd that he doesn't draw men, but on the other I've seen lots and lots of female artists that only draw women (conventionaly atractive women).... I think that causing controversy for this is a little silly.

So so well said, as a musician and artist myself for about ten years and also an immigrant to the United States, it’s very odd how criticism over here can sometimes be so poorly received by artists. I think art in other countries typically embrace other styles and in more modern parts of the world there seems to be an underlying beauty standard depicted in these drawings. It is refreshing to see an artist want to make better art, and I hope younger audiences will push themselves to also use their art to portray the messages they want, and I would certainly hope that a younger audience genuinely would not want to support toxic standards of women (especially minors)

Watch out everyone, most folks are respectful. (Yeah this vid old but internet is forever) But there's some hardcore Sam fans being hypocrite and jerks in the comments section. (There is alt accounts so that already tell you everything)
Please watch the video first. It's very funny.
You have the right to like Sam and his art for whatever reason. Other people have the right to dislike him and his art for whatever reasons. The only thing that matter is to not be a jerk to him or the people that disagree with you.
I'm saying that because many comments are basically implying or saying that artists can draw whatever they want and that this video is hate and riding the drama. Never it is said that they don't have that right. We just also have the right to make video about it and criticized. There's a way to do it respectfully. And that video do it well. Like I'm serious it's so tame the aggressive response are surprising and I wouldn't be surprised if all of those people just looked at the title, watched 1 min and then complained in the comments.
So yeah, saying artists can draw whatever they like and don't need to appeal to anyone but only follow their own subjective taste. Is true and valid. But shutting down people giving their opinion about say art or how they don't like it for whatever reasons that also follow their own subjective taste.
    Is massively hypocritical.
Just because it's not positive doesn't mean you have the right to stop other from saying it. Seriously you are giving a horrible image of Sam fandom by your defensiveness and double standard. I legit didn't think someone like him could have such fans but alas internet proved me wrong.

Late to the Party, but I felt basically the same way as you. As artist myself I know how easy it is to fall into pattern when you overly familiar with something. (Women in that case) it was clear to me that the reason pedro looks more realistic because he doesn't have the same muscle memory. And he just defaulted when he drew Bella.
Is the art piece kind of bad because of the clashing styles - yes, can you point out that he clearly has same face syndrome - sure. Can you now say, that he must be a misogynist? No???? That's absurd, we don't know that man

I would have drawn her with cat ears in alternative universe buckling up with spideman fighting zombies and that would be fun and ok as well. Art is to express urself, thats the freedom artists have. The only thing we have to watch out for are banned symbols. Thats it. If I want her to be a SpongBob Charekter, I can do that as well. IDK why Artis just call out other artist for absolutly nothing...

Umm I know it’s kinda weird but does anybody else notice/hear piano or faint calming music in the background after she mentions the no pitchfork zone? It sounds like she’s picking up some curious background music. If not then that’s probably my hearing being superhuman for a second. I swear that my hearing is incredibly selective sometimes. I can sometimes hear the faintest of sounds. It’s funny because a number of times the sounds I heard were important. Like a couple weeks ago when I swore I heard my neighborhood well breaking, and then it actually broke. Or that time an alarm or device was ringing or making quiet noice in the floor below me at the other side of my house. I usually don’t know where the sound is coming from or what it is, but it’s normally about something important.
