So with you on the "cheap" bikes being not so cheap. The last round of "modernizing"/fixing cost us around $500 and that was with being patient and getting almost everything used or NTO at fire sale prices (like a neglected but perfectlly working set of Ultegra 10 speed brifters, on some nice Scott bars with a stem for $40 US :O ) I have to use a spreadsheet to keep track of what I anticipate on spending/spend so I don't drift into "Well shoot, I could have bought it new for a LOT less" territory, lol.
EXACTLY! I’m always so pumped to get started on builds and it gets so out of hand so fast haha
Keep the BMX content. I started in BMX dirt jumping then to racing. Late teens I put down the bikes and got into cars. As an adult I came back to cycling but on the MTB. My heart will always have a spot for BMX.
I think your content variety is one of the best parts, totally don't mind the BMX or shifting away from un-economical builds.
Here's a different take on the BMX thing you talked about: I'm a 49 yr old roadie and mountain biker that just bought a BMX because of your content. Even though I have very few skills currently, I am becoming obsessed with BMX and it's all because of your content. Keep making whatever videos you want to, you're inspiring people even if you don't know it.
Great to read, that there are more "middle aged men" as I am too, enjoying this channel :-) Greetings from Germany
I found an old Cannondale mtb frame and converted it to a commuter for my son. I am an old Cannondale fanboy, so I was anxious to do it. I stripped the paint and painted in a multicolored theme, added a modern 1x groupset and some nice cranks. Used some 700c rims, found brakes with enough adjustment to work with the 700c rims, modern bars,...I really think it would have been cheaper to have just bought a commuter bike. But, it wouldn't have been as original and fun. Plus, the Cannondale is very lightweight. It was kind of funny because my wife asked if I was building it for him or me. LOL!
I love almost all of your content!! Like you said, if something isn’t my cup of tea I just skip it. Keep doing what you’re doing please!
When I first started mountain biking, I was bending rear rims so fast it was crazy. But I couldn't justify buying a high quality rim, because I was a beginner.... But the reality was that buying a durable rim ONCE as a beginner would have made my life so much easier. I finally got a good pair of DT Swiss rims a few years ago, I still can't believe how good they are. Still holding strong.
Thanks!
People are weird. I subscribed for the vintage to modern type of builds, but I stayed because of you, because of how you make most of the content fun and engaging. The fact that I got into MTB helped as well (I own and enduro bike but I basically only have the time to ride my gravel bike). For example I don’t care about dirt jumpers and genuinely hate BMX, but man you make contents related to those bikes so fun and entertaining that I love to watch these as well!
Congrats on the upcoming marriage pal haha. Loved the way you announced it on here.
I like all your videos from your cheap build because it gave me confidence to wrench my own bikes, and you're spot on with the fact that cheap bike builds end up costing a lot. I was a fixed gear guy for years because it's what I could afford and now you're why I bought my first Poseidon gravel bike. Gotta say you're an extremely skilled cinematographer and narrator dude. Your content is awesome keep doing you. Love it all bmx, road, mountain. You've got the best attitude in the biking community as far as I'm concerned
One of the biggest ways I offset cost on my builds is to buy from thrift stores, garage sales and Facebook marketplace. I’ll buy an entire bike sometimes for just a set of brakes or a drivetrain I need. The key is then to SELL the extra parts or replace the missing parts and sell the bike when I’ve got what I wanted. I’ve bought a total of 4 bikes to build my Felt Cyclocross bike. I’ve made a profit of $390 selling off the extra bikes and parts after paying for the build. Cheap builds can actually be free or make money. Maybe that helps?
Man I loved this video, and thanks for the Q&A, which I unfortunately had not noticed beforehand. The bike jump from the desk trick was the perfect cherry on a silly cake;).
Hey I love your bmx content - I really don't understand either why someone would unsibscribe after a bmx video, weird...
And, I totally support the new direction you talked about taking with your videos. It's just awesome to be with you when you ride and experiment on bikes. I mean, I do love the tinkering videos, but honestly the riding ones are just a lot more dynamic and often more fun. I should mention though that as a long time fan, I also really love the videos where you just talk and do whatever. But I would not sorely miss the bike tinkering and build vids, except when it's on bikes you're gonna use like MTBs and BMXs.
I didn't think you would miss the shop! Great content as always! The new
" warehouse" is killer!
sound/echo deadening suggestion: hang six banners/flags/pieces of cloth, from your ceiling, they don't have to be huge, just flag size things, like people mount on their front porches.
Suggestion two: make some 3 ft squares of egg cartons. great for reducing echoes. Radio stations of old timey days used such.
Years ago, I stayed in a hotel in the Philippines. My room was above the karaoke bar. They had covered the ceiling with egg cartons and painted it black. We'd go drink and sing karaoke. And then I'd go up to my room and it was loud as hell. 😂
Brown Sugar and Cinnamon you maniac
Keep it up. I’ve been following since the beginning as your style of build and riding is on par with mine.
Makes sense on the trash or bash!
Thanks for answering
Imma still do mine but it will def get expensive.
I have a free beach cruiser frame but imma cut out the seat tube and head tube and braze on a seat tube that can take a dropper and a modern head tube so I can put a suspension fork
Coaster brake clunker!!
You have a solid grip on humor my friend. Still miss the threats though. Keep it up.
BMX, road, gravel, MTB - I'll watch it all 🚲😎😎
I like the idea of less builds. Focus on what you have. It would be nice to see you have more content just having fun with your friends. Too much of this platform revolves around someone becoming the new de facto voice of a not do obscure subculture, and then just milking it with pointless videos that are more or less ads for corporations in order to make a living off of it. It is nice to see more random bopping around stuff.
Agree the randomness is what makes it.
Love all your content BMX included
Bmx, mtb, gravel, road, etc. I like bikes. You seem to like bikes. That's one of many reasons why I watch.
This is so true / you have to de strict with spending but it always gets out of hand. Had a winter bike that got out of control on parts and spending but its now my go to ride.
I'm completely on board Angela's suggestion of less builds more of you traveling to other places to ride. Would love to see you visit DKlein out in Oregon for a suffer fest of a gravel ride 😆
I get it. Doing a retro build isn’t that cost effective but I’m so much more interested in those builds than reviews or upgrades of new bikes. I could t care less about the Poseidon but I’ve watched 20 times the rockhopper build videos
Wildberry Poptarts! that and Hot fudge Sunday is pretty good as well.
I really enjoyed this video. I've been a subscriber a few years and would love to see more bmx!
Here's my $.02 on the subject. First, choose the right bike to build up in the first place. Make certain the frame fits. Yes, there are ways to make adjustments for fit, but why make it harder on yourself? After that, have an end game in mind. Does the subject bike lend itself to achieving that goal? Will it get to where you want it to go without jumping through hoops or over spending? Choose the right bike as a starting point and you can offset a lot of the potential cost.
Started here from your fixed gear stuff now I’m shopping for a bmx but also have a large quiver of bikes I’m working on because of you lol
Those who unsubscribe just needs to open up their minds, Honestly, I get jealous when you do BMX things cause I never had the chance to get to practice those kinds of tricks growing up, I’m just catching up rn, but on a mtb. Cause if I rode a BMX it would never look right.
That’s all I needed to know. Stoked I found you. Bmx is and always will be #1!!!! But I want to get in shape and have a little fun doing it and mtbs are fucking expensive and I don’t want to ride them on the roads so I’ve been looking into rebuilding an old gt, but like you said, replacing everything to make it something is not cheap. Where I can spend 999 and get a brand new Fairdale ready to rip fully modern and 4130 steel. So, probably gonna do that and eventually rebuild the ol GT when I get the chance, thanks man. Can’t wait for more bmx videos haha
Lots of BMX sprinkled in a lot of the videos lately! Appreciate you checking it out
Congrats on the proposal!
I feel you, literally had a “cheap” vintage mtb build cost over $700 this winter…
It didn't need to cost that much, you *wanted* it to cost that much. Insisting on Shimano or SRAM over MicroShift Advent/Advent-X. $160 for a MicroShift drivetrain from Two Hoosiers Cyclery for instance.
I rather like the BMX bike content though I've never ridden one. I guess that's why I like to see it. Russ (PLP) reviews a Fairdale with BMX bars which looked cool and are probably comfortable.
We all need to look at all kinds of bikes if we like bikes and like riding bikes.
Thanks for the honesty.
Building a specific bike out of other bikes and parts purchased isn't cheap, so I completely understand. I have had an idea for a softtail gravel build, but the overall cost just keeps setting back my plans. I will eventually get it built, even if it's another year away.
As far as your overall content, the variety and entertainment value is why I have been subscribed for over 5 yrs now. I am not a bmx'er, but I enjoy watching those with the skills do it. Road and Mtn are my go to as of now, but that softtail gravel will add to my list.
What about wildberry?! That purple frosting is iconic
Come to the west coast!!!! We have the best trails here on Vancouver Island!!
Last $40 bike cost me about $800 total for the whole adventure. The $100 one after that was less ambitious and totaled up to about $400. Worth every penny in both cases, and I doubt I’d be able to sell them for anything close to what I spent.
I’m not a bmx-er, and it’s not my thing. I don’t like less build video’s. I liked the shop, but also your garage. Why am I giving my money? Stupid! I’m STUPID. I like your style though! Keep up! 👍🏻
LOL appreciate the contribution! Garage is a good space, excited to use it so much more
Have you tried the sunrace RDM900? I'm really excited about the idea of a clutch derailleur with old school 7, 8 and 9 speed bikes and original shifters.
Building projects for the sake of building them and not enjoying the bike afterwards is deff not a exciting path to go down I don’t blame you.
Also thanks for answering my very important question sadly for you, I’m a s’mores fan hahaha
What!!??? Ice cream sunday poptarts are the best! Love bmx videos.
nice table
As a hobby bike builder myself,i can totally agree on the subject that restoration/modern upgrades are getting expensive so now im focusing on functional builds to commute to work i dont have bike buddies and some weekend roadies and mtb riders look at me with a frown sometimes because my builds are hacked for daily use and i can smoke them easy with minimal effort Lol im a mechanic not a spandex wannabe 😂😂
I love your content and the variety in it, but must of all I love to see you having fun whit bikes... all bikes
You did a video on the cost of up cycling bikes last year and that was an epiphany for me. Curb collections are good but I view bikes as components now rather than a single entity, mix n match.
Angela’s right. Come to the best coast and ride in them hills!
Seatpost 50, bars 100
You can't build cheap with expensive parts. What I pay for is tires, paint and shifter
That's crazy. The BMX are the jam but I grew up BMX. JMC... Raced them
I'm a retired bike mechanic and recently built up a nice steel 90's mountain bike with all new Shimano parts I had left over; just my labour for a bike build is worth the $200 I'm asking for the bike on fleabay but zero interest.. all the young bucks want to ride the latest tech and older folk tend to go for hybrid road bikes.
love the ending xD 'maybe'
Used bike: $50, Chain: $15, Cables/housing: $15, BrakeS: $10, Misc: $10+
$100 bike w/out "modernization" and used parts.
Now X 20 bikes 😅
I feel you ... bought a 10 euro bike during COVID for parts ... ended up rebuilding it as a bike for getting groceries based on that frame, which was the only thing not broken and I ended up spending 200 euros more. A similar new one would have cost double that, but probably be a lot nicer to ride. In the end, I love it, but I decided I will not fall into this trap again.
Tell me about it. I just bought a Banshee Paradox V2 and it is going to get pampered.
Cheap bikes are expensive when you buy everything new. At that point, what is even the point?
Get a old town bike or a rigid MTB. New tires, a bit of polish and maintenance, check that parts are functional, replace things that are not, use used parts as much as possible. It is all about selecting the good used platform to build. One with the least amount of part swapping.
This requires shopping time and browsing all used item marketplaces, but a functional enough base for 50 dollars euros, new tyres for 60, new break parts for 10, wires for 10 and quite often a new seat. Drop in another 40 for a drop bar and tape and its a awesome looking, fine enough performing piece. Work time, well it is a hobby and a project brought to yourself. If not trying to flip, then why count it in?
I know I am not the expert in bike building. But this is what I did for my old town bike with fat tyres. Looks cool, and rides smooth (I got the "frame" base bike for free, because apartment building spring cleaning. Some one had left a bike there and never picked it up) . Internal Gear hubs FTW.
Yeah, as a trasherbash participant I endorse the money burn! Its much more fun morphing bikes with a tinker here and there to get them dialed into where your imagination desires!
Revisiting this video, and I can tell you, even just bringing a Cheap/'Free' bike back to life is not cheap. A Chain is $20. Replacing the dead shifter is another $20. New brake pads? $20. Seat? You guessed it, $20. New bearings because someone left it out in the rain for a year, new grips, new pedals, whatever cheap rubber you can find because it turns out the sidewall is bulging... Before you know it that "free" bike is now a $100, $200 bike, even when working on the cheap. Even when going budget and used, it adds up startlingly quick... And Where i am, the local market is such that you're never getting that money back out of the bike.
I rode green skinwall Michelin Wildgripper 26"x 1.95 on Porcupine Rim in 1999. Lol.
Have a second channel for all the bmx content that's not tinker tuesday related?
He is not joking I picked up a specialized hard rock for $75 and once I got it finished to what I wanted which was literally a single speed set up and bars I was already in it for like $400
Lol. Congrats bro❤
I don't do BMX, but as a subscriber I'm up for diversifying my RUclips content to include a new-to-me cycling genre.
Yep the cheap builds are expensive but, sooo much fun!! I’m building a 1 drive for my girl as soon as we find the 1 she likes. Keep doing any videos. You’re entertaining bro.
Anybody that subscribed when you were doing gravel bikes and unsubscribed bc you’re doing BMX stuff is bad people anyway
This caught a bit of a bummer vibe near the end. Made sense though.
I agree with your partner, go get some experiences.
Maybe do BMX shorts?
No chocolate pop tart? Some people just want to see this world burn.
Congrats on getting married!
can you do a vid on U brakes, recently been wanting to put brakes on my Milwaukee bruiser and I'm kinda just fixie brain
I'm also a 6ft bike addict married to a 5'2 travel nurse. weird. However, s'mores pop tarts are a totally different game if you microwave them.
brown sugar cinnamon
Norton fiend temp tattoos in shop when? :D
I think the biggest divide between the MTB/Gravel and the BMX stuff is that BMX, while skillfully impressive AND relevant to a lot of MTB skills, it just lacks the sense of “adventure” that a lot of people relate to, myself included. Still not a reason to unsubscribe, or hell even to not watch. IT’S STILL GREAT CONTENT, PEOPLE! Eric’s videos have “the sauce”, BMX content notwithstanding. 😂
BMX is weirdly separated from the rest of the bike world. Even big retailers like Jenson and worldwide don’t carry bmx
@@losSoCalMTB Yeah, it’s different, for sure. I enjoy the content and I’m always impressed with the polished skill that just makes good bmx just look effortless. It’s just not something I’m interested in doing. I like my bike rides to take me somewhere. It’s also why I don’t love weight lifting, running on treadmills, skate parks, or practicing skills on the mtb in the car park or front yard. Too static for my liking.
Bike stuff is pricey, I'm surprised I kept my Trek 830 under $300 - no fancy parts, some of it given to me. It's really only worth it if you enjoy the process and you REALLY don't care about cool parts. For that price, I'd basically be looking at a superstore bike in my locale.
What are you thinking for new shock for the red bike? I know it probably has a name but I am bad with names... 😅
Maybe a Bomber Coil, or something like that!
What if 20 people unsub if you don’t post a BMX video?
Unsubscribing due to BMX content is really funny to me. For whatever reason some people can't stand loving multiple genres of cycling (I guess). As a person who transitioned from dirt jumpers and xc bikes to gravel/road riding with age, I only love your content even more because of variety. Thanks for all the inspiration and keep it coming.
I'm not really into the BMX content. I am into the other content. I continue to subscribe and, like, watch the videos that are interesting and not watch the ones that aren't. To me.
I suspected that you would eventually be riding Angela's bike. If it was truly for Angela, you would have made it pretty for her...silver parts. Instead you half-baked the idea so subconsciously you could rob parts for a future project and justify it because she does not ride it. Dark but probably true!
Silver parts are the worst hahaha
No way Man, silver is coming back! Hell, polished White Industries never left! 😆
yea, why would someone unsubscribe from a random bmx video? i’m not really interested in bmx but not only do i not unsubscribe i still usually watch those videos anyways 🤷🏻♂️
Canadians get totally hosed on bike parts / if it comes across the boarder its really hard to believe how expense it is / I collected receipts on a build US dollars vs Canadian / I felt horrible and angry when looking at the final cost. Hey lets make bike parts real expensive and ignore all the cars and truck sucking gas like cruise ships and charge people for fast food paper bags.
Ain't that the truth.
Bring cheap mtb bike builds back or like a buy sell trade kinda thing see what you can get?
Skip the BMX video!? Oh, no! Its better to rage quit!
LAL
Just found your channel and love it. Ticks all the boxes for me. Your bikes really remind me of mine. Except for the full sus stuff. I don't like those. So I guess I'll rage un-sus now.
Not really.
I unsub after each BMX viddy but it's just so I can resub right after. Engagement baby!
Renovations builds always suck period. Anyone that tell me they are doing projects like that I would say but why unless you have to. You need to get out of the shed so thats a for sure even if you didnt have a youtube channel.
Were your "cheap builds" ever cheap? Sure the price of these popular retro frames have gone up, but as you said you recovered it from a dumpster that isn't the case. The rest of the build: replacement parts have always been not cheap imo. I always find that its better to be picky about the craigslist score and to only buy someone else project bike that matches what you want and has already been converted to what you want. Because as you said, the bikes will never be worth what you put into them. Then again, just building them is half the fun.
That and decide you DON'T need top of the line $200/pair tires on a cheap build. There are *many* cheaper tire choices out there - even tubeless.
Wait, did I hear you say you were getting married🤔
$50 for an Origin-8 seat post? Why did you go for a more expensive brand instead of an unbranded Kalloy that would have been $30 if you were trying to keep the build as cheap as possible?
I generally speak in CAD
Setting up a bike for my partner is weird do. I can't test ride it so I get my roommate to ride it. He's about the same height as she is. Vs I'm nearly 7ft lol
Make whatever content you want. Wait! NO!!! Careful with the anti Bmx movement. But every now again do a budget/expensive build. They’re cool
ngl, the parts on the streetstomper are really overpriced. Someone as experienced with bikes as you should be able to find parts for reasonable prices.
$50 for an aluminium seatpost and $200 for stupid colored tires is nuts
USD to CAD conversion absolutely DESTROYS the viability of most builds. Weird seat post sizing doesn’t help either. Could I have hunted for months to find deals? Yes. But what’s my time worth hha
@@Spindatt So how are you justifying the $200/pair tires when you could have gotten a pair of Nano 40's for $70 US (lets call that $100 CAD) - so half what you spent.
Pop Tarts SUCK!!! I was in high school when we got the new Pop Tarts samples mailed to our house. They looked good, but tasted crappy. I tried some recently that my raised-on-junk food grand kids had - they still SUCK!!! You are right PT without frosting suck more. If you show Pop Tarts on your channel I will unsubscribe - just kidding!!
✅ Promo>SM
the funnest mtbers are born from BMX, let the rest unsub
You forgot about Cherry poptarts, i'm unsubscribin' now.
Any build is expensive.... no shit.
Yeah, then multiply it by the amount that I’ve done!
what’s your next tattoo going to be?
You seem to have triggered some folks with this one.
LOL only one curse word in the comments and a few unsubscribes!
