So with you on the "cheap" bikes being not so cheap. The last round of "modernizing"/fixing cost us around $500 and that was with being patient and getting almost everything used or NTO at fire sale prices (like a neglected but perfectlly working set of Ultegra 10 speed brifters, on some nice Scott bars with a stem for $40 US :O ) I have to use a spreadsheet to keep track of what I anticipate on spending/spend so I don't drift into "Well shoot, I could have bought it new for a LOT less" territory, lol.

Keep the BMX content. I started in BMX dirt jumping then to racing. Late teens I put down the bikes and got into cars. As an adult I came back to cycling but on the MTB. My heart will always have a spot for BMX.

Here's a different take on the BMX thing you talked about: I'm a 49 yr old roadie and mountain biker that just bought a BMX because of your content. Even though I have very few skills currently, I am becoming obsessed with BMX and it's all because of your content. Keep making whatever videos you want to, you're inspiring people even if you don't know it.

I found an old Cannondale mtb frame and converted it to a commuter for my son. I am an old Cannondale fanboy, so I was anxious to do it. I stripped the paint and painted in a multicolored theme, added a modern 1x groupset and some nice cranks. Used some 700c rims, found brakes with enough adjustment to work with the 700c rims, modern bars,...I really think it would have been cheaper to have just bought a commuter bike. But, it wouldn't have been as original and fun. Plus, the Cannondale is very lightweight. It was kind of funny because my wife asked if I was building it for him or me. LOL!

When I first started mountain biking, I was bending rear rims so fast it was crazy. But I couldn't justify buying a high quality rim, because I was a beginner.... But the reality was that buying a durable rim ONCE as a beginner would have made my life so much easier. I finally got a good pair of DT Swiss rims a few years ago, I still can't believe how good they are. Still holding strong.

People are weird. I subscribed for the vintage to modern type of builds, but I stayed because of you, because of how you make most of the content fun and engaging. The fact that I got into MTB helped as well (I own and enduro bike but I basically only have the time to ride my gravel bike). For example I don’t care about dirt jumpers and genuinely hate BMX, but man you make contents related to those bikes so fun and entertaining that I love to watch these as well!

I like all your videos from your cheap build because it gave me confidence to wrench my own bikes, and you're spot on with the fact that cheap bike builds end up costing a lot. I was a fixed gear guy for years because it's what I could afford and now you're why I bought my first Poseidon gravel bike. Gotta say you're an extremely skilled cinematographer and narrator dude. Your content is awesome keep doing you. Love it all bmx, road, mountain. You've got the best attitude in the biking community as far as I'm concerned

One of the biggest ways I offset cost on my builds is to buy from thrift stores, garage sales and Facebook marketplace. I’ll buy an entire bike sometimes for just a set of brakes or a drivetrain I need. The key is then to SELL the extra parts or replace the missing parts and sell the bike when I’ve got what I wanted. I’ve bought a total of 4 bikes to build my Felt Cyclocross bike. I’ve made a profit of $390 selling off the extra bikes and parts after paying for the build. Cheap builds can actually be free or make money. Maybe that helps?

Man I loved this video, and thanks for the Q&A, which I unfortunately had not noticed beforehand. The bike jump from the desk trick was the perfect cherry on a silly cake;).
Hey I love your bmx content - I really don't understand either why someone would unsibscribe after a bmx video, weird...
And, I totally support the new direction you talked about taking with your videos. It's just awesome to be with you when you ride and experiment on bikes. I mean, I do love the tinkering videos, but honestly the riding ones are just a lot more dynamic and often more fun. I should mention though that as a long time fan, I also really love the videos where you just talk and do whatever. But I would not sorely miss the bike tinkering and build vids, except when it's on bikes you're gonna use like MTBs and BMXs.

sound/echo deadening suggestion: hang six banners/flags/pieces of cloth, from your ceiling, they don't have to be huge, just flag size things, like people mount on their front porches.
Suggestion two: make some 3 ft squares of egg cartons. great for reducing echoes. Radio stations of old timey days used such.

I like the idea of less builds. Focus on what you have. It would be nice to see you have more content just having fun with your friends. Too much of this platform revolves around someone becoming the new de facto voice of a not do obscure subculture, and then just milking it with pointless videos that are more or less ads for corporations in order to make a living off of it. Here's my $.02 on the subject. First, choose the right bike to build up in the first place. Make certain the frame fits. Yes, there are ways to make adjustments for fit, but why make it harder on yourself? After that, have an end game in mind. Does the subject bike lend itself to achieving that goal? Will it get to where you want it to go without jumping through hoops or over spending? Choose the right bike as a starting point and you can offset a lot of the potential cost.

Building a specific bike out of other bikes and parts purchased isn't cheap, so I completely understand. I have had an idea for a softtail gravel build, but the overall cost just keeps setting back my plans. I will eventually get it built, even if it's another year away.

Cheap bikes are expensive when you buy everything new. At that point, what is even the point?
Get a old town bike or a rigid MTB. New tires, a bit of polish and maintenance, check that parts are functional, replace things that are not, use used parts as much as possible. It is all about selecting the good used platform to build. One with the least amount of part swapping.
This requires shopping time and browsing all used item marketplaces, but a functional enough base for 50 dollars euros, new tyres for 60, new break parts for 10, wires for 10 and quite often a new seat. Drop in another 40 for a drop bar and tape and its a awesome looking, fine enough performing piece. Work time, well it is a hobby and a project brought to yourself. If not trying to flip, then why count it in?
I know I am not the expert in bike building. But this is what I did for my old town bike with fat tyres. Looks cool, and rides smooth (I got the "frame" base bike for free, because apartment building spring cleaning. Some one had left a bike there and never picked it up) . Internal Gear hubs FTW.

Revisiting this video, and I can tell you, even just bringing a Cheap/'Free' bike back to life is not cheap. A Chain is $20. Replacing the dead shifter is another $20. New brake pads? $20. Seat? You guessed it, $20. New bearings because someone left it out in the rain for a year, new grips, new pedals, whatever cheap rubber you can find because it turns out the sidewall is bulging... Before you know it that "free" bike is now a $100, $200 bike, even when working on the cheap. Even when going budget and used, it adds up startlingly quick... And Where i am, the local market is such that you're never getting that money back out of the bike.

Just found your channel and love it. Ticks all the boxes for me. Your bikes really remind me of mine. Except for the full sus stuff. I don't like those. So I guess I'll rage un-sus now.
    Not really.

Renovations builds always suck period. Anyone that tell me they are doing projects like that I would say but why unless you have to. You need to get out of the shed so thats a for sure even if you didnt have a youtube channel.

Were your "cheap builds" ever cheap? Sure the price of these popular retro frames have gone up, but as you said you recovered it from a dumpster that isn't the case. The rest of the build: replacement parts have always been not cheap imo. I always find that its better to be picky about the craigslist score and to only buy someone else project bike that matches what you want and has already been converted to what you want. Because as you said, the bikes will never be worth what you put into them. Then again, just building them is half the fun.

That and decide you DON'T need top of the line $200/pair tires on a cheap build. There are *many* cheaper tire choices out there - even tubeless.

$50 for an Origin-8 seat post? Why did you go for a more expensive brand instead of an unbranded Kalloy that would have been $30 if you were trying to keep the build as cheap as possible?

ngl, the parts on the streetstomper are really overpriced. Someone as experienced with bikes as you should be able to find parts for reasonable prices.
$50 for an aluminium seatpost and $200 for stupid colored tires is nuts

    • @Spindatt
      @Spindatt  Год назад +5

USD to CAD conversion absolutely DESTROYS the viability of most builds. Weird seat post sizing doesn’t help either. Could I have hunted for months to find deals? Yes. But what’s my time worth hha

@@Spindatt So how are you justifying the $200/pair tires when you could have gotten a pair of Nano 40's for $70 US (lets call that $100 CAD) - so half what you spent.
