Hell yeah!
Funny that Animanics and Regular Show used Shakespeare to argue about how "mean" modern rap is.
Did the writers ignore all the political warfare, death of teenagers, bloody betrayals, and sexual innuendos in Shakespeare's works?
I thought about this while editing. 😭😭😭
That actually reminds of a Dorkly bit; it’s the one where R.R. Martin tackles all the criticism he gets for killing off his characters
Yeah, Shakespeare would probably have enjoyed rap if he lived today.
Literally what I was thinking XD Man Shakespeare may have practically made his own version of English, but he was FILTHY.
Titus Andronicus by itself goes beyond anything hip-hop, or even the pearl-clutchers' concept of hip-hop, does
The reason the boondocks has one of the best portrayals of hip hop is because it was written by black people for black people and the other portrayals of hip hop are written from a non personal experience with black culture so they see it as more of an aesthetic or a performance rather than a nuanced experience. It also touches on the theory of afropessimism where non-black people see blackness and black people as props that can used for entertainment without regard to how it effects the people they're taking from; which is why hip hop is so commonly used for a punchline in Entertainment.
Even though I'm not a fan of the Boondocks, I agree with this whole post. You can always tell when black people are involved in the writing when portraying black people in the media. Non black folks use hip hop as a mockery because it isn't seen as "real" music.
Are you talking about the show? Or the comic?
And why I never liked seeing ⚪ people rap on television half the time I was watching TV. Some are okay and some are 🤢 trying too hard.
@@PoliticalAbstract Exactly. Just look at some animes depiction of A "groovy black character". It's obvious the writers have no idea what Ebonics language.
@@yhb4682 Exactly. When you have no experience with other races, let alone actually being a part of a particular ethnic group, it's so evident that the writers don't know what they're doing. It's just like in the 90s with characters like Vince from Recess, why is the only black main character good at sports?
I was so captured by the novelty of having Tyler the creator and Childish Gambino in Regular show that I didnt really understand how that episode framed hip hop
The irony goes even further when you realize to play the big bad threatening rap bullies they got to of the least threatening rappers in hip hop but now that I think about it that may have been intentional also fun fact the creator of regular show was actually in freaknick
@@johndavis9321 To be fair around that time Tyler was known for lyrics like, "I tell em to eat a dick quicker than mexicans sprint over borders" and "Young enough to get the fucking priest to come flirt with us". Goblin had just released around that time with songs like Transylvania and Troncat.
That’s like my favorite episode of regular because it was fun even if they got defeated by pops

Early 2000s cartoons really had a lot of hip hop and urban influence given that gangster and bling rap was really poppin. It really felt a lot like white men pandering the same way Rocket Power radiated that “X-TREME MILLENNIUM” energy of the 90s or the “LOL RANDOM XD” of the ‘10s. So the fact that so many featured hip hop and urban elements in the day yet still had minimal black casts and made rap itself seem scary and intimidating is honestly infuriating.
So just white propaganda?💀😭
he really said “it’s fine, theres more Peanuts specials to do” 😭😭😭😭
I think now that loving hip hop is normal and part of mainstream pop culture, the suburban white boy fan energy has moved over to the internet kids who are activists but somehow get very confused when told about their use of AAVE.

Just letting you know about a small fact about Static Shock.
The reason the original comic, along with the Milestone Comics line, a black independent comic book company, failed is because there was a lot of corporate meddling behind the scenes of the cartoon, as merchandising was constantly pushed back, and that comic stores in the 90's and early 00's refused to sell black comic books because they believed black comics and stories wouldn't sell and it got worse when Static Shock's creator Dwayne McDuffie passed away just months before Static was supposed to get his reboot with DC, despite Milestone being sought by DC for Static alone.
As of December of 2020, Milestone Comics has finished the lawsuit against DC for shelving the many IPs, including Static Shock, Icon & Rocket, Hardware, and many others. Static is supposed to happen sometime this year, while others are to follow.
You can also see Static Issue #1 blown-up in the poolhouse on Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

I'm a white guy who grew up on cartoons but my knowledge and consumption of hip hop is woefully incomplete. Having you break down all these shows featuring hip hop culture that I grew up on gave me a new perspective that I hadn't considered before in many ways how it's portrayed. I remember when a white friend I had in highschool named Brittney Hennessy talked about how she thought rap wasn't music because of its structure. Meanwhile she liked Eminem because he "talked about real issues", as if a MAJORITY of black rap artists don't.
I had never heard something so idiotic! 😑🙄
Wtf structure she talking about that Eminem wasn't using??
Like. Don't get me wrong. I'm white, right? But I enjoy rap. And it drives me absolutely nuts when people think all rap is "fuck bitches get money" like. NO. There's tons of stuff by artists they've never heard of, rapping about anything and everything.

Yin Yang Yo is quite good not bad at all
The first part with the Boondocks and talking about idolizing people who do bad things reminds me of being younger and looking up to mobsters in mafia movies like Goodfellas - it wasn't until I was like in my late 20s to realize that these people are selfish criminals
Cartoons have a long way to go in terms of critiquing and paying respect towards hip hop culture. We need more people within the culture to help those that want to pay respect to it and understand the art form. The more animators keep trying to tell these stories the better it will get. With every fail there’s an Teen Titans Go. It’s gonna get better before it gets worse.
I met Jim from Nockforce a couple of years ago when I was 16, he was a really nice guy and he even gave me these stickers and I got a picture with him.
It’s that weird intersection of black culture and animation culture for me.

Glad you called out that Regular Show episode. I get what they're going for, picking a character like Pops as the foil. But it didn't feel like Pops really learned much about the genre, he just kinda Popsplained to them about positivity or whatever. I like that he did something true to himself (like Ron in that Kim Possible) but they didn't try to meet them halfway.

It's a beautiful way to show the culture of hip hop and how it's mashed and mushed into the life of cartoons and animation, two things most of us have grown up with our whole lives
It’s more of a section, hip hop is massive so to use a stereotype to generalise it is pretty simple

@@ToonrificTariq damn I feel like a fool. I just love that episode. My bad
The regular show and animaniacs episodes were very similar but carried different messages.
The animaniacs one said that it’s cool to rap/express yourself as long as you don’t disrespect others, which is why Yakko and the rapper compromise at the end (pretty rare conclusion for animaniacs).
The regular show one pretty much labeled rap “poetry but with insults”, and that insulting nature is why the rappers needed to “put down” via poetry and ends with them being defeated instead of making up with the protags like the animaniacs.
I believe the Boondocks is the only show that I can think of that has this understanding of hip hop. While it does mock the outlandish culture, its fine in a way that respects the art form as a whole. The atmosphere, the music and the tone all feel authentically hip hop.
While I agree that hey Arnold and Class of 3000 aren't hip hop per se, they do have a appreciation for jazz blues and other forms of music that hip hop is inspired from. Love the videos, keep up the good work.
50:54 I was appalled. Didn’t expect it
The fuckin “still waiting for that ok ko review” skit from the interview killed me 😂
I really liked how you put the end of the "misc." section. A lot of critiques of broader trends in media, especially with regard to representation, aren't *necessarily* about any individual depiction being bad. It's often more about the general trend. Really frustrates me when bad-faith arguers try to claim that a critique of X in media is inherently arguing that all media portraying X is bad.
you really be doin god’s work in the cartoon community
Whilst I get your point about Yakko also acting mean, that's kinda just how Animaniacs episodes play out. The Warners encounter an "special friend" (a jerk), then they proceed to annoy them by giving them a taste of their own medicine until said "special friend" gives up. I still like the segment because the ending is pretty rare for Animaniacs, usually the Warners win by making their opponent go crazy but here they come to an understanding. That and the rap battle was fun.
But I still enjoyed this video, it was very interesting to watch!
I wonder what you think of Deltron in Craig of the creek, hes like my absolute favorite character in that show and his whole entire thing is that the music he sings represents freedom and expression in the future, along with his mission which is literally to fight ignorance and bigotry

Upset that this only has 200k views. One of the best quality videos on this subject.
I really appreciate even just a basic run down of music as it relates to animation from any perspective. As a person with amusia (often referred to as "tone deaf" and is a condition where music just isn't... music, it's just a bunch of noise mostly, and can apply to loss of or no perception of rhythm, melody, or just the inability to process it emotionally- I personally don't process it emotionally) I can't even begin to comprehend how music effects people so deeply, but I understand animation emotionally. When anyone breaks down a sound track, or goes over why a certain style of music might have been picked for certain animation, it helps me put things together better.
"Magical Brooklyn is where they live , Elves and Dwarves is who they hang out with"
Screw bedtime stories, gonna show this to my children at night.
Even though it came out after this video did, "Karma's World" on Netflix is definitely worth a look on this front. It was developed by Ludacris and pretty much embraces hip-hop all over its sleeves, on top of being a very charming show on its own.
