  • Originally intended to be in the charge of 35028 Clan Line with a power classification of 8-P it was an almost certainty that 45596 Bahamas with a power classification of only 6-P would have a diesel shoving on the back. On the day however we were presented with an unassisted “Jubilee” at the head of 10 coaches tackling the Westcountry hills in excellent weather, which left everyone lineside and
onboard treated to the most wonderful “sight and sound festival” from this immaculately turned-out machine.
The outward leg is captured in the last mile of Honiton Bank from Wilmington to Honiton Tunnel where N.R. are undertaking major works to consolidate earthworks and protect the line for the future. Much was cordoned-off but N.R. staff were in attendance and kept their eye on us photographers who were allowed excellent access. Definitely the highlight of the day and one to play at high volume!
On then to Exeter Riverside Yard where I am still putting up the camera gear as she leaves the station, hence the editing and mega-traffic volume!
The return leg is captured at Exeter St David’s Station where unfortunately the camera was seriously impeded ( a perennial risk at stations!), so I have put together a few “stills” whilst we enjoy the soundtrack before getting back to a relatively acceptable view of the depart.
Finally to Woodrow Barton, a favourite location of mine but no more as the riverside trees have grown to such an extent that views down the valley towards Exeter have now virtually disappeared. As a compromise I used a static camera looking down the valley through a gap in the vegetation and the main camera capturing the crossing of the River Exe before heading away to Westbury, Salisbury and eventually London Waterloo.

Now this is what classic British steam is all about. No diesel banking from behind. Just a locomotive and it’s carriages. Bahamas proves once again the power of steam!
Great video, lots of wonderful shots. I always love to see tunnels on these videos.

Alan Steamclips had always enjoyed watching from the lineside. One day, he decided to ride the rails instead, something many of us enthusiasts love doing best.
The young man found his way on to Chester Railway Station.
"Am I on the right platform?" he remembered to ask a member of staff.
"Spot on," came the reply. Alan parked himself on a bench and waited expectantly. Bahamas was scheduled to appear with a West Coast Railways special train. Sadly, the Jubilee never made it. She was sidelined with leaking firebox tubes. Another Jubilee, Leander, was called in to help, but she was busy with another railtour. The managers were wondering what they could do.
"Any steam engine will do," Alan told them smiling. "She doesn't have to be of LMS status."
"Peep!" came a shrill Swindon whistle somewhere in the distance. Clun Castle steamed in with The Shakespeare Express, and Alan got onboard. A nice surprise to be sure.
In the middle of filming the journey,
"AATCHOO!" sneezed Alan, turning his head away. "Bother my hay fever!"
"AATCHOO!" sneezed another voice. "I suffer hay fever worse than you." The young man turned and found himself face to face with another RUclipsr, whom I love scaring out of his wits: Sam's Trains. You can't win them all. Oh, and don't let the Hay Fever Bugs bite.

I don't think it was ever intended to have a rear diesel as the load was always going to be 10 coaches - very easy for an 8P and very manageable for a 6P (some are saying a 6.5P!) in summer (i.e. good adhesion conditions).

    • @Steamclips
      @Steamclips  Год назад

Interesting comments Ian, thanks for that. I based my assumption on the Train details on Realtime trains, presumably supplied by the operator, which gives a load of 715 tonnes, which invariably means diesel assistance on the rear. Whatever the case, it was wonderful to experience a Jubilee working hard. Kind regards, Alan

@@Steamclips It's necessary to take the loads quoted on RTT with a cruet of salt as they are intended only to show the expected performance (acceleration, mainly) rather than an actual load. The return load (same train) was shown as 420 tons at 75mph! The train weight was actually about 380 tons.

Brilliant, working like a sewing machine. No bag of s**t on the back. The meticulous hard work of Bahamas lads shines through. Clean pick up on injectors, drain cocks tight and not even a whisp of steam from the piston or valve glands. It pulled out of Exeter with ease well done lads. The camera work was excellent too.

    TIMING TRAINS !!
A proper train ! No daft diesels swinging along on the tail (banned in BR days on safety grounds !). And Bahamas seems to be doing well entering Honiton tunnel at what appears to be around 35mph. With 10 x Mk1's around 340-350 tons tare or around 360 tons loaded (rule of thumb 16 passengers = 1 ton).
Indeed such a formation can be timed by the mileposts against the known gradient profile to discover the horsepower being exerted by the locomotive, and reveal the average speeds. Assuming someone on board still remembers what "train timing" was all about in steam days and takes a stop watch !!!

@@Steamclips TRAIN TIMING - It's what the famous Charles Rous-Marten was employed to do by the GWR, when he timed (the now preserved) "City of Truro" doing 102.3mph down Wellington bank (Somerset) on 9th May 1904. He was employed because of rumours that had reached the GWR Directors that their trains were reaching terrifying speeds. The result recorded was buried for 20 years by the Board. Because it was felt such horrendous speeds would be regarded as "Reckless" by potential passengers !!!! He timed the train using a stop watch against the quarter mile posts.

Big Beautiful Beast! I can breathe again... not wanting to miss a sight or sound. Well done, Alan, even with the caveats you posted, this is a splendid video. You say 'N.R.' - is that Northern Rail? I am confused, at this remove... I had assumed you are by the old S.R. ROW, but you mention St David's, which IIRC is GWR territory. Whatever - it is just lovely to see and hear the raw (unassisted) power. Thankyou for the post.

Hi Peter, thanks once again for such nice comments and questions. N.R = Network Rail (a government body) looks after all the infrastructure, trains are operated by private companies. The route was westward from Waterloo on Southern rails to Exeter Central. Then Exeter St David's (shared by the Southern and Great Western where Southern trains face West for London and Great Western trains face East) which effectively turns the train for the eastward return to Westbury on Great Western rails then back onto Southern rails at Salisbury for Waterloo. Best regards, Alan

@@Steamclips Thankyou Alan - I was able to trace the route. I believe there's a fairly steep nap from St D's to Central, so this way around circumvents that. Westbury threw me - Salisbury I recall, but between there, and until the red cliffs at Dawlish, most was unmemorable.
I recall my old Geoggers (sic) master asking us if we knew where 2 trains going to London went in the opposite directions. And where there's a station where trains don't go (pre-Beeching... the teacher would have to say 'active station' nowadays). You will know both answers.
