Thousands of sky lanterns carrying people’s wishes lit up the night sky on February 12, 2022, in northern Taiwan to celebrate a local lantern festival. The Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival in Pingxi District, New Taipei City, happens every year. Participants write their prayers and wishes on the lanterns then release them into the sky in the hope they come true. The festival is world famous and has been listed as one of the ‘Festivals to attend before you die’ by Fodor’s, a publisher of English-language travel information.

I would imagine there were lots of speeches, mostly not in English, but SCMP cut this video directed to an English speaking audience, so it makes sense they'd include some English content.

I know this is a long standing tradition and everything, but we also need to consider we're not like in the past anymore where people are only a handful compare to now. The impact where in the past might be negligible, now dialed up ten folds. Those lantern will all end up being wastes, dangerous to everything from creating fire, affecting the animals, and else. I believe we can come up with more environmental friendly take of the tradition of sending prayers, so the prayers are not just for those who were doing it, but for all of us, human in general, and everything in it, the mother nature.
This is a beautiful sight to behold, yes. Me, as also a chinese descendant, want to preserve all the rich traditions which have been past down for hundreds of years. But we need to start taking into accounts, what the impacts are of those we have done so far. I'm not saying erasing them all completely, perhaps reducing or doing some modifications to minimize the negative impact. We don't want our prayers turn to be others' nightmare, do we?

I think they're mostly made of paper and strips of wood. The environmental impact is minimal, and certainly less than, say, our use of tissues on the office desk or in restaurants. Let's keep things in proportion.

I think it would be really interesting to look into more sustainable options for these kinds of floating lanterns, such as making them out of easily biodegradable material. Especially since Chinese people use floating lanterns so much, if a ton of people release lanterns into the sky, it could become a pollution issue.
