    To be fair, the Last Giant is *just* a boss you can come across. In DS2, depending on where you go, your first boss can be The Last Giant, The Pursuer (you get one chance though), Dragonrider, Old Dragonslayer, the rat gank, Najka or even The Rotten.

      I've always wondered what the devs considered as the first area of the game, I think most players included myself went to forest of FG first but it's not like heides tower of flame isn't just as easy accessible. I do feel like the sotfs version of Heide is significanty more difficult tho to the point where it definitely feels like you're not supposed to go there yet, but in vanilla it's almost easier than the forest.

    I'd honestly say Grafted Scion technically is more of a first / Tutorial boss than Soldier of Godrick going off including Vanguard Demon on the list. You are supposed to die to it, but if you play correctly, you can beat it. you do get a reward but you have to jump off a cliff after to progress. It also is the very first enemy that you fight, and despite being re-used, it still has a boss health-bar and is less common than Godrick's Soldiers.

      @perrytran9504 Год назад +1

      DS3 was my first so disclaimer, but I think Gundyr holds up even after multiple playthroughs of all the games minus Bloodborne (no PS4). He isn't a pity win, but he also isn't one of those bosses they expect you to lose to because the odds are so stacked against you. Instead he is designed to test your fundamentals without worrying too much about godly performance for your first boss. You can beat him with rolls, parries, blocking, or using items, all of which you should be doing later as the game gets harder, but you're not going to win by mashing attack and facetanking him. It's more useful than something like Lost Giant or Soldier of Godrick which are too easy, and while it's a nice trope to get hit with the "impossible" fight it does get old and DS3 I think was able to be a tighter experience by not following it. What more can I say except that Gundyr does the best job at accomplishing what the tutorial should do - teaching the game.

The controls were very difficult for her but she began to get the hang of it and made it to Soldier of Godrick as a warrior class. It took her many attempts and she got frustrated and lost hope but eventually triumphed against him and was so excited and happy. The entire FromSoft experience of perseverance and victory, in my mom’s face. I’ll never forget it, so Soldier is Godrick is definitely for someone.

    How is ds3 starting area a C tier? For how you judge bloodborne after you include everything from the point you get control of the character. You spawn in an area with tutorial messages on the ground, weak enemies around to try your attacks, an optional hard enemy "hidden" to the side that gives you a solid starting soul boost if you manage to kill, the Gundyr fight which as you said is top tier for a tutorial boss and the npc before firelink drops you his weapon which is a pretty solid one too. Ds3 is at least an A tier tbh.

    Sekiro is a fascinating game because there is always a moment somewhere around Genichiro on top of Ashina Castle in the beginning where the game just *clicks* and you think about the game entirely differently. Before then the game is very, very frustrating because you can feel something isn't working right, then you finally slip into place like a square peg in a square hole and the game becomes the best game you've ever played.

    Gundyr is the perfect tutorial boss for me. Simple, yet not laughably easy for newbies the same way Asylum Demon or Soldier of Godrick is. Introduces the concept of phase 2 very well with the transformation and complete moveset switch, but also makes it obvious how a bigger size and higher damage is not always an advantage.
    I think its the perfect balance of being epic but noob-friendly enough so it won't discourage completely new players. Last Giant lacked that extra kick to the fight for me, Asylum Demon is more of a gimmick than anything, and Soldier of Godrick is just a basic enemy with a healthbar.

  • @cincameron
    @cincameron Год назад +2

    Last Giant is way better than Asylum Demon, especially with the build up in Forest of Fallen Giants.
    In terms of story, it's really good. You feel like you are learning the story of this region you are wandering through, then you face off against a wounded creature that is assumed to be the last of its kind, and it attacks you in what seems like a desperate attempt to crush any potential threats to itself, but in reality, you learn much later that you are the person who put this creature in its current position, and it wasn't just some lowly, desperate animal trying to survive... it was once a King. There are other reasons I like it for its contribution to the story, but that'd take a lot. For gameplay, it feels a bit lacking in its movements, but it's such a colossal monster trying to crush an ant. I think it is reasonably challenging given that it is in a visibly weakened state, yet its size is still used to its advantage. I like that it has an attack where it tries to fall on you ,but i feel like that is way too rare (and easily punishable). It's relatively easy for players who survive the initial couple hours, but challenging enough to prepare them for the following bosses (Pursuer especially).
    Shigenori was just a mini-boss, and a basic one at that. I wouldn't consider him the tutorial boss. Genichiro on the other hand is. Genichiro is pretty cool. I like that he isn't challenging enough to slay you within 30 seconds, but at the same time, I don't think he should do as much damage as he does in the tutorial if they are trying to teach you about the unblockable attacks. If the player could take 1 or 2 more blows before dying, it'd help the new players better understand the danger of certain attacks. Still a good introductory boss though, if a little too difficult.
    Vanguard Demon I can pretty much say the same. It hits a little too hard in the tutorial, but it even easier to predict the attacks of... It's a good learning tool for pattern recognition, but again, being a 1-2 hit kill will render most players dead within the first 15 seconds if they are going into the fight a little too eager.
    Asylum Demon, I don't particularly like due to it being the easiest tutorial boss of the bunch, but its visual design and gameplay are intimidating enough that new players will struggle to focus. I like that the drop-attack does a decent chunk of its health, letting the player know they are ready, and can be a morale boost.
    Cleric Beast in terms of gameplay is a perfect introduction to fighting large enemies. It isn't punishing enough to kill you easily even in your first fight, but it is durable enough to withstand some punishment which means the player would need to learn some patterns to last long enough to defeat it, i.e. a couple minutes or so. It's appropriately challenging after the trials the player needed to go through to reach the Great Bridge, and it is very unique to all of the other enemies in most of the game... Gascoigne was less interesting imho.
    Didn't mean to go on a rant lol.
    Soldier of Go--wut? If anything, the Grafted Scion or Margit should be used. Margit is excellent. Great challenge for a first-timer, the boss and arena each present different threats to the player, etc. Grafted Scion is cool, but it is similar to Vanguard and Genichiro in doing way too much damage and being thrown at the player too early. Still neat.
    For areas imo:
    Undead Asylum felt very jank, but i still liked it for the most part. Idk, it must just be the visuals.
    Thing's Betwix is beautiful, but the scattered fog-wall rooms were weird and might scare new players who thinks a boss could be behind some of them. I like the concepts they prepare you for, and how you get rewarded with the Ladle by exploring the entire area and lighting the braisers.
    entire Cemetery of Ash area (including right outside Firelink) was weird. It looked cool, but i don't like it. It's also really weird how they disconnect it from the main game despite, unlike Undead Asylum, it is right next to Lothric.
    Central Yharnam is the best tutorial area. So many nooks and crannies, and alternate routes (3 ways to go through it to reach Gascoigne). It was insane how I got lost the first time I played and I stayed in Central Yharnam until the middle of my 2nd session.
    Cave of Knowledge is pretty good. Idk how people can miss it. It takes place in a pretty well-lit cave and is a nice introduction to the smaller dungeons of the game. But unfortunately, the enemies are not interesting, outside of Godrick's soldiers... but one of them being the boss is quite pathetic considering there's only 1 other boss in the game at that level of quality and difficulty.

    S: Iudex Gundyr, DeS tutorial area, DS2 tutorial area
    A: Asylum Demon, DS3 tutorial area, DS1 tutorial area.
    B: Vanguard Demon, (Grafted Scion,) Sekiro boss and tutorial area
    C: Soldier of Godrick and ER tutorial area (just too easy)
    D: DS2 tutorial boss, Bloodborne tutorial boss and area. (Don't exist.)

    Last Giant is not a tutorial Boss, he is just usually the first boss you fight.
    DS2 doesn't have a tutorial boss. It is slightly more open ended that way.

      So by default last giant is the tutorial, got it.

      @@ryanvandoren1519 Not what I said mate. He could be the first boss you fight, or you could fight Dragon Rider or Orenstein first.
      Heck you could fight Aava the pet of the King first. Either way, being the first boss you encounter doesn't mean it is part of a developer manufactured tutorial area.
      He is not a tutorial boss, and judging him as one obviously nets him in a low tier.

      @martinwagner9699 Год назад

      @@YasonYou Counterpoint: Last Giant is the first boss you're reasonably supposed to fight, therefore *for the purpose of this video*, he should count as the tutorial boss.
      Also as a side-note, I got the impression that this tier list hadn't been created by Ember himself anyway, judging by the confusion he had with the ordering of the images and how he couldn't recognize all of them easily.

    • @YasonYou
      @YasonYou Год назад +5

      @@martinwagner9699 I agree that he is *reasonably* the first boss you are meant to fight, but I maintain that he is not intended as a tutorial boss.
      DS2's tutorial area is Things Betwixit, and it's tutorials are entirely optional (like Elden Ring). You may enter the various rooms and learn the basics of the game, or you can just go on straight and exit it immediately. It is quite clearly intentionally designed as a tutorial area by the designers, and the Last Giant is not part of this area.
      I understand *why* the last giant was put on the list - it was either him or nobody - I'm arguing he is not a tutorial boss.
      It is kinda like putting Anatstacia in a firekeeper tier list. She is indeed the first fire keeper in DS1, but she is not the token fire keeper like the rest of the games have.
      edit: typo

      I mean, let's be honest, this tier list wasn't the best anyway (not talking about Ember here, but the Tiermaker page).
      Who in their right mind would have called the General the tutorial boss of Sekiro rather than Genichiro? Even Soldier of Godrick makes more sense than that...

    Honestly, for elden ring I consider Tree Sentinel as the true tutorial boss. It's a really good fight by itself, but also can teach you some valuable lessons, chief among them being that it's sometimes the best idea to just avoid a challenge until you are better prepared for it.
    Also I do agree with yarnham's placement, but comparing it to the other, more contained, tutorial levels doesn't feel quite fair. Also I still say that, in terms of relative difficulty to the character's strength at the time, it's the hardest area in bloodborne's base game.

    I played a little of DS2, but I didn't head into that forest on my first attempt. I didn't realize I could go that way from Majula, so I headed down that tunnel and...yeah...it went about as well as you might expect. I ended up running past those knights even though them being so strong should have been a clue as to head elsewhere, but I'm used to difficult enemies in these games. I ran into the Dragonrider and had a very, very bad time of it. Didn't notice the switches to expand the area or anything. Got immediately kicked off the area by the guy. Bad enough of a time that I actually restarted to change my build and then I realized I needed to go the other way first. Whoops.
    For DS3, what about the area before Iudex Gundyr as a tutorial area more than the area around Firelink? That area is more of a tutorial area since it teaches the player all the controls and the plunging attack as well. It also has the first giant crystal lizard. I admit that I cheesed that fight. Got it to follow me and roll itself off the cliff for me. I made up for that by fighting the 2 in the Untended Graves properly. I also cheesed the Sword Master into jumping off the cliff (though I fell too) just so I could get the uchigatana early and use it until I got the Hollowslayer Greatsword.
    The Soldier of Godrick gave me a "wtf was that?" moment, followed by a lot of laughing. Admittedly I knew the tutorial area was more meant for people who'd never played a FromSoftware Souls game before. Especially given how obvious they had to sign post it for people to try jumping down. Instead of, you know, the usual yolo approach many take, including myself, early on.
    Yeah, the Central Yharnam area is the best starting area since it really isn't a starting area at all, as you said. They just toss the player into the game and expect them to sink or swim and it's great. Cleric Beast is great for showing players the beast bosses and then Gascoigne shows the player first how to fight other hunters and then that there are going to be multiple phases to nearly every boss (and that the phases could be radically different from each other). I seriously just finished my first run of Bloodborne earlier this week and it was amazing. I'd started the others at various points on PC before I got a PS5 and I got sucked into Bloodborne immediately. It's the first FromSoftware game I've finished and seen the end credits roll. For DS3 I've completed the main game and just have the 2 DLC to do. I took a break from it to focus on finishing up Bloodborne.

    wouldn’t really count the cleric beast a tutorial boss because it is totally optional and doesn’t prepare you to bosses like gascoigne does
    for gascoigne you need to dodge and use your gun to stagger, and you get shown that bosses can have more phases which can be totally different, and it shows you human and beast bosses in one fight
