Terry Eagleton combines serious learning with lots of good humour (unlike some of the commentaries below) and represents the best sort of democratic Marxism - the very opposite of Stalinist / North Korean pseudo-marxism. ironic then that during the Korean war (and afterward on Korea as in general) the International Socialists denounced BOTH Stalinist and US/Western imperialism and the capitalistic oppression and exploitation of workers under both regimes
nonsense. You are an opportunist who opposes socialism. The working class is was emancipated in the USSR and Stalin was a communist revolutionary who fought reactionary and imperialist forces on the side of the working class. You are not serious about consolidating socialism.
YES, YOU ARE RIGHT - THAT IS WHY SOCIALISM MUST BE INTERNATIONAL - CORPORATIONS AND BANKS CAN TRANSFER CAPITAL AROUND THE WORLD IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE IN ORDER TO EXPLOIT CHEAPER LABOR - WORKERS ARE BOUND BY PASSPORTS AND IMMIGRATION LAWS - CAPITAL IS INTERNATIONAL WHILE LABOR IS STILL BOUND WITHIN NATIONAL BOUNDS.
Actually, Terry is to be commended for his work and devotion to this subject. Having surveyed all the videos on Marx on RUclips the public is barraged with propaganda passed off as genuine Marx. The ones that disable the comments sections are mainly the ones produced by the Ivy League institutions addressing lectures on some of Marx's most critical and important theories and writings. Small as it may be turning off the comments section might be a sign of weakness that an orthodoxy really does not have a monopoly on Marx and fears a challenging of ideas. In which case that in itself is an anti-dialectical action is it not to stifle opinion? The state and civil society are crippled by discrimination in their respective spheres of political life, therefore, people will never be wholly free by political means or wholly revolutionary by protest. Discrimination is the dominant force in both spheres of life. Humanity is forever protesting what it is not rather than moving toward what it can become. In 1843 the working class had very little to lose to take on the role of abolishing both these conditions and freeing humanity including itself in the process as Marx sought to prove it would. The working class of 1843 made an attempt, it failed, another attempt in Russia it succeeded to a great measure. But now they act as a agent of change for the bourgeoisie in the White House. Discrimination in both spheres worsening and a deconstruction of the state. When Marx wrote about discrimination in the state, he also noted discrimination develops in civil society, he observed neither sphere would be a vehicle for emancipation. Working class struggles have not succeeded was a practical question that revolutionary theory had not penetrated the consciousness of the masses enough for the masses to become revolutionary. Other process are occurring like it or not that help this learning experience along but whatever that is, the working class movement is charged with the responsibility of freeing humanity from the object that oppresses humanity is a battle-cry for a better world. Something more than just fighting for higher wages or collective bargaining, the labor movement was christened with a universal calling that has greater appeal than a good job.

Why not nationalize the banks, take them over completely, instead of just bailing them out so they can repeat the same greedy irresponsible behavior? At least if the banks were nationalized, we could perhaps have some public input into how capital is invested to serve socially useful purposes. Are bankers somehow uniquely qualified to serve as the directors of the nation's capital?
