- Today on Pokemon Character Study, I take a look at Riley, who has appeared in the Games, Anime, and Manga! He has some unique aspects, such as his ability to use Aura and how he is an "Attack Stat" trainer, and I dive in depth on all the lore and information on him!

My theory about Riley’s relationship to Sir Aaron and Ash:
Following Lucario’s death in Lucario & the Mystery of Mew, Sir Aaron and Lucario were reincarnated (which would explain why Riley and his Lucario looked like they never aged when they meet with Ash, Brock, & Dawn), but in order to hide their identities Sir Aaron changed his name to Riley & Lucario would not communicate to Riley via telepathy but rather through Aura.
In regards to Riley’s relationship with Ash, I would say Sir Aaron (Riley) most likely had a sibling, who he had little to no contact with, is Ash’s maternal Ancestor.

I was thinking the EXACT same thing. With all of the similarities between their abilities and choice in pokemon, it seems highly likely to me.

Tristan Neal maybe it is a hidden ability he unlocks from guarding and sacrificing his own life to the stone (i dunno the name of the stone) mentioned in the pokemon war. . . . which is (maybe) a legendary aural pokemon lives inside. . . . which in turn gave him the power to reincarnate over surpassing generations. . . .So much plot story on this one.

When I was little I was OBSESSED with Sir Aaron (and eventually Riley as well) and OBSESSED with Cynthia. I even tried to draw them. Wish I still had the drawings.

I'm glad you made Riley a part of your character study. Although I haven't rad the manga so I don't know much about him there, he was a part of Gen 4 I really enjoyed. Well, I enjoyed the concept of Stat Trainers as a whole mainly because it gives a little bit of depth to the world. Gives the impression that there're other trainer out there who are actively going around to battle (aside from your rivals) rather than just sit in one place and hope someone passes by them.
But Riley in particular really stuck with me and I really like his character, although little is revealed about him in the games themselves. He just always gave off the impression that he was someone important. Maybe that's because he has an apparent connection to Byron. Not everyone gets offered Gym Leadership. But yeah, cool character and one of my favourite parts of Gen 4.
Riley is the reason why Lucario is my favorite Pokemon. Btw, I believe that Riley is a relative of Sir Aaron. That would explain why they look so similar along with the aura powers. The Lucario might just be a coincidence, or Riley knows about Sir Aaron and wants to follow in his footsteps.
I have a suggestion!! Silver! The diffrences between his game and manga counterpart is really interesting to see. I know he doesn't have an anime counterpart sadly, unless you count Paul from Sinnoh.

maybe very late too say but Silver does has an Anime counterpart though very briefly seen in the special Legend of Raikou in the Japanese version. Paul looks like him but Paul is to Silver as Ash is to Red. Its different compared to Gary who really is Blues counterpart while Ash and Paul are more "based on" (Ash mightv been Reds counterpart in the beginning of the anime but after the indigo league he falls out of that role a lot more)

Riley's one of my favorite characters, but he's become increasingly obscure and forgotten since the end of G4,.so whenever I see people still like him (ayou in this video, the comnenters in this video, and all the people who requested Riley in the first place make me very happy.
I love Sir Aaron too, so you going into detail on him was great.

At the end of the last chapter in the Emerald arc, Riley is seen on a ship along with other supporting characters.

Current headcanon until Word of God says otherwise is that Aaron is Riley's ancestor. The main issue between the two is that we don't know who was designed first. Lucario and the Mystery of Mew precedes Diamond, Pearl, and Plantinum by a year in Japan but we really have nothing to suggest Aaron was designed first before having some traits transplanted to Riley or vice versa.

i didnt read all the comments but the design on aarons glove at 8:35 looks like rileys necklace. aarons necklace shows the 3 lines connecting into one where it meets the orb but i guess aarons glove is a more primitive design.

Damian Prentice While I can't promise I'll ever cover a theory on those wars soon (even though I definitely want to!), I believe that Proto Mario has done theories on the Kanto Wars in case you want to find a video that talks about one of the wars.

I always thought that Riley was a leftover Gym Leader, but his design was too good to just scrap.
The whole "I was offered a Gym Leader position but declined" thing just strengthens my theory.
The manga description of aura is just like a thing me and my friend made up when we were little: Wind sense, we could find people on the play ground. Of course it was completely made up. We were weird kids :D
My guess the sign is either for force or earth as Riley specialise in a lurcario which is steel and groundon is earth type there are similaritys in steel and ground . For force is because groundon is a force of nature and the abilities Riley is like a sense of force
Yellow from the Pokemon adventures manga seems like she has aura because she can read minds.
Brutal Noodles I didn't remember she could do that, but after looking it up, you're right! :D She can also do other things that seem pretty aura-y, like her healing abilities and whatnot.
I dunno if Aura is the right word. She can communicate and heal pokemon because she's one of the chosen few from Viridian Forest with that power. ( along with Lance, and I can't remember but I think Giovanni too. )
sourcream uwu I feel so out of touch with the Adventures/Pokespe manga right now ;_; I didn't even remember that Yellow was from the forest. I just looked at a list of all her abilities, and some of them do seem similar to Aura skills we've seen (such as her slight telekinesis), but others seem like their own thing separate from Aura (boosting a pokemons level? That's crazy O.o ), so I would agree that calling it Aura might be kind of a stretch, even though there are some similarities.

I saw Lucario and the Mystery of Mew before I saw the anime episodes with Riley (and before I played 4th gen), so when I played Platinum for the first time and met Riley, the first thing I thought was: Sir Aaron?! xD After that I did my research! Still a bit confusing though...

Can you please make a theory about how Riley could possibly be Sir Aaron's son due to the facts that they both use a lucario, they have a similar look, Sir Aaron is an aura guardian while Riley wants to become an aura guardian, they both use aura, and that Sir Aaron possibly gave his lucario one last job before he died, which was to protect his son Riley, so please consider doing this theory
It's likely, BUT Riley is more of a desendant than a son. Like, Aaron probably live a century ago, so the present Pokemon time is waaaaaaay far from thar

I don't know if u know this or not but Riley is not sir Aron. Yes Riley is dressed like sir Aron, has a lucario as a companion but that is only because he is a gaurdian of aura. He even says that he is a gaurdian of aura himself in the anime. Just saying to the people that he is not sir Aron. If anyone disagrees with me I'm happy to see what they think about Riley.
Emerald Guardian I agree that they aren't the same (some people in the comments have been saying they are possible ancestors to each other which is a pretty cool idea), but at least for this video, I consider them to be counterparts/versions of each other. That might sort of be a disservice to Sir Aaron, but it was the only way I could group him into this video and actually talk about him :D (Besides this video I don't think there would ever be a time I would talk about him).

Perhaps the symbol means said Pokémon or person is able to use Aura. I don't know if Groudon and Kyogre are able to but I know Dialga, Palkia, I think Giratina and Mewtwo can use it. And Lucario, of course, though I'm unsure if any other pokémon can use it.
