Jeremiah 1:10 in it’s entirety: See, I have set you this day over nations and over kingdoms, to pluck up and to break down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant.” (ESV) In context, the Lord was calling Jeremiah. Jeremiah said he didn’t know how to speak, much less become a prophet to the nations (Jeremiah 6). This man failed in his usage of this verse. Carry on….

This gentleman used this verse to apply it to “wrong thinking, wrong mindsets” etc. When in reality, this verse in its actual context applies solely to the Old Testament prophet Jeremiah being called, by God, to the prophethood. The way you capture the meaning of a text is through what’s known as exegesis and interpreting through means of hermeneutics. The simplicity in exegeting scripture is reading and studying verse by verse. The “context” of a verse as I mentioned sheds light on what is being communicated. If you were to read the verses preceding the verse this gentleman quoted, you would arrive at the truth of the verse, which is what I commented originally. What he’s doing is known as eisegesis, forcing himself and his congregation into scripture, when it has nothing at all to do with us. So he’s cherry picking verses from scripture in order to qualify a point he’s attempting to make. He like many other Christian “pastors”, such as Mike Todd and Steven Furtick do this. I’d encourage you to search out Bible believing and teaching preachers, such as Steve Lawson, John MacArthur, or a Voddie Baucham (too many to list)… who conduct expositional teachings of scripture in order to extract the actual meaning of Gods word and teach how to faithfully apply it to your life.
