For those who just want the answer (I still recommend listening to Granger since it's less than 5 min):
    1. Read in the morning and evening
    2. Read when you're traveling
    3. Read while you're waiting around
    4. Basically just read more by just reading as often as possible
    5. Set a page goal to reach by the end of the day but read more anyway.
    6. Enjoy what you are reading and alternate between books that interest you to those that don't.
Since you are already reading this you might as well get off RUclips and read that book now! No distractions just books!
    Will power! let's go!

And you didn't even need to make an annoying video boasting about the amount of books you read.
I work about 14 hours a day and as a teacher generally am expected to prepare classes in my free time, I have kids to look after and after my work day also teach privately to make up my poor salary. I used to cycle to work and over the last two years worked 9 hours a day without a single break.
Sooooo reading was a challenge when it used to be all I ever did.
Any please people, don't read Harry Potter and think you've read something.
      Read ....
      Camus
      Marquez
      Carson McCullers
      Dylan Thomas
      John Steinbeck
      Nietchze
      Llorca
anything by a Russian Author preferably Bulgakoc
      Margaret Atwood
      Dickens
      DH Lawrence
      Arundhati Roy
Anyway, those are the highlights after a few glasses of wine.
Potter's alright for a movie but don't think of it as serious reading. Unless you're under 12

to be honest, I was a little hard on Harry. The writing quality and story lines are excellent so I would recommend them for improving langauge, but if you want to read to learn about life and become a better person then there are better things to read.
Any reading activity will improve your cognitive ability, just not necessarily feed you great ideas worthy of thinking about.
Yes Austen definitely and the Brontes (Wuthering Heights is a masterpiece).
I have read (In English of course) The Stranger (Outsider) and The Plague.
You're writing in a second language. Excellent. I teach English and also speak spanish as I live in South America. Reading is where we can enrich our language skills.
One of my favourite books, Le Grande Meaulnes. read it 30 years ago.
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_Grand_Meaulnes
Currently reading, Wolf Solent so from one very French book to a very English one.

I find it bizarre that a few people in this comment section believe you need to read 102 books in a year to be a good reader.
I consider reading 30-40 books in a year to be a crazy high number. When I read I like to take my time with a book (that I enjoy) I'll re-read sections along the way, make small notes about things in the book and after I've finished a book I'll take a week to reflect on it.
Reading should be about finding a book you will love and getting as much enjoyment from it as possible not approached as
a number to hit in the shortest time which some people seem to think, especially in the Booktuber community.
To me, reading 102 books doesn't mean much if I haven't enjoyed them how I want to enjoy them.
It's great to want to read more if you never read or only read 1-2 books in a year, but for those reading this that "only read" 30-50 books that are putting themselves down because they don't read 102 books, don't feel down! Reading 12 books a year (300-500 pgs) is already a fantastic accomplishment, and I personally believe that some part of the enjoyment of reading gets lost when you begin to get to the triple digits in a year.

    • @EenhoornPrinses
      @EenhoornPrinses 6 лет назад +128

Agree! I especially like to take my time after I've finished a book to reflect and appreciate it a little more (and to keep the story alive for a little longer!). Jumping to another book immediately feels too rushed and makes me feel a bit disrespectful to the book I read prior to it. So it's totally okay to read at your personal pace and with your personal habits, whatever suits you :)

    • @matildaclewes4388
      @matildaclewes4388 6 лет назад +24

Luca Dolan Ruiz I strongly agree but Ruby is just showing the people that want to read a lot even if it isn't the best idea. I also think that if you read around 100 books a year then you will struggle to find books you like. All I'm saying is that Ruby is just answering a highly asked question and also in no way am I trying to be rude I'm just trying to state my ( very similar to yours ) opinion :)

Summed up tips as I undertood them:
    1) set aside time to read
    2) read when you're traveling between places
    3) always have a book with you
    4) use page goals per day ie: read until page 49
    5) love what you're reading
    6) alternating between heavy and light novels helps you with the mood throughout the day

bybyrei what do you mean there’s no reason? She’s absolutely intelligent woman! anyway i kinda agree with you there are some people who read so many books just to show off but I don’t think that’s the case with her, there’re people who are very passionate about reading and you can easily tell she’s one of them

    • @bybyrei1079
      @bybyrei1079 6 лет назад +10

ror ror Even if she's personally passionate about reading, the title of this video gives off a very wrong idea and same goes for her stating how many books she reads per year. That is because the number of books you read is completely and utterly irrelevant. What matters is that you find challenging and enjoyable readings that help you develop new ideas and understand new concepts. As I said, you could read 1000 children books with 2 words each and you would've still read 1000 books.

    tips:
    - set aside a time every day when you are going to read (she reads when she wakes up for 15-30 minutes & before she goes to sleep for 1-3 hours)
    - read when you’re travelling
    - always have a book with you
    - use a page flag to say how much you want to read in a day
    - love what you’re reading

Studying 14 hours a day? Let me give you some advice. Professional musicians dont practice for more than 2-4 hours a day. I love studying just as much as you and honestly admire you for your passion. There's not many people like us that really enjoy studying even when it's not during school! I once told a girl i was trying to date (she had no interest in me anyway so it didnt work out) that i liked studying and she didn't understand. Anyhow, your brain cannot compartmentalize that amount of information unless youre doing it in chunks, but even then. 14 hours is way too much. The most ive studied was probably up to 10 although probably not as intensively since i often daydreamed. At the very least find some time to set apart in taking care of your health. Sitting for long periods of time can be counterproductive. You're a truly bright girl, but you're very young and still have lots of life left to live. Work your way in having a balance in your life. Especially since you're on your way to college. What i carry with me from high school is not how much i learned but the memories and experiences i made. Ill end with this; Elon Musk has mentioned that he barely gets to enjoy life because he works so much. This isn't to discourage you, but to help you grow because book smarts != wisdom. Hope this helps Ruby. Never stop learning. (But always keep in mind that life isnt always about learning because life itself is a process). I'm 20 btw and i definitely plan on continuing to learn for the rest of my life just like you.

I completely agree with all of these tips and apply them to my everyday life. I love reading and I am currently reading the Harry Potter series and a couple other smaller books on the side. I am on the fifth book, Order Of The Phoenix and I am absolutely adoring it. I love reading so much. However my mom no longer allows me to read at night because I normally end up staying awake until 4:00 AM reading. I may be slightly.... slightly nerdy but who ever said that that was a bad thing. I absolutely can not wait for school to pick back up. We will be reading small peices of Shakespeare in literature. Don't tell my mom but I've already snuck a tiny glimpse at Romeo and Juliet. Ohhhh I love school!!!!!
I enjoy your channel very much and appreciate all of your tips to a productive school and home life.

    Hello Ruby:)
I recently bumped into your channel and started watching your videos and ever since i have been wanting to ask you this: how come a school student like yourself finds it necessary to study for such extremely long periods of time. Obviously you love studying as an individual, it looks as if it comes from inside but still why so so many hours? After all it is school, not even university. I don't think that any school student is supposed to study that long.
Yet, i really admire your discipline which leads me to my final question: do you never ever get bored of studying that much, have you never spent a day without studying? How do you manage do stay both so disciplined and motivated?
    Thank you:)

It is not about how many of what one reads, it depends on what one reads. For example, I believe that some books are useless and are not worth of reading at all. Yet some books are worth to read and should be read anyway. To sum up, reading is good, yet it also depends on what you read.

This is the best advice. I used to read so little. But started doing similar things like her and went a long way. Although I read way less than her, my goal this year is to read 20 books (never achieved even half in a single year).
I use goodreads app to feel accountable and proud of the books I read and make sure I really really really pick the right ones in line. As I read 1, my line of books changes just to make sure the next keeps the bar for me.
Since I work a lot and like to use nights to go out, usually I read in the morning and in the night minimum 20 mins or until I get to the mark I want to get (which could be 1 chapter per night or a number of pages per night), that way I know how long it could take me to read it all.
    Good luck!

I used to read so much when I was young, but I find that the older I get, it becomes harder and harder to find books that I really love. I agree with all the tips you said. When I was a bookseller, I read many books from many different genres that I didn't necessarily liked, and although it was a good experience to step out of my comfort zone and sometimes be positively surprised by books I wouldn't normally pick up, I didn't like many of them and sometimes I even didn't finish them (a thing I would have never done before, leaving a book unfinished!). Now I'm studying literature and I have to read lots of "heavy stuff" that I don't necessarily enjoy, but they make me appreciate the lighter stuff even more :D I'm currently reading one of my favourite book series of all time, four books with each 600 pages or more, and honestly, if I didn't stop myself, I would read day and night and I would finish them all within one or two weeks because I love them so much xD Even though I'm not a fast reader. I must say I could read faster but I don't enjoy a fast pace. I want to be mindful of each word and enjoy every sentence to the fullest, so I'm not a fan of fast reading.
On a sidenote, you seem so lovable and educated, just like Hermione! I admire that :)

I’ve only started reading for leisure again when I started college, last I did so was middle school. 100+ books is crazy! Nikt Szczególny sure, but it seams like its really important reading 100 books in a year. I read, a lot, because i like it, but you don’t have to strees it out. Read whenever you want e how much you want. You don’t need to read this much to improve yourself. Read with the intention of improve and learn, not because you have to. yes, that's what I thought. Why do you need to set a goal like to read 100 pages a day or 100 books a year? What is the point? For me it makes reading stressful and instead of enjoying your time you are thinking about the "deadlines" you made up

Fabiana Milone In my personal opinion I think we ALL should read. At least a little. But I can see what you say. It's about the amount of books you read (which shouldn't matter because this is not a competition). But for example, in my case, I want to read faster because I have 100+ books that I haven't read and people still give me books because reading is my favourite hobby. That's why I want to read as many books as I can this year. And it'll be fun to do so!

      blessed Muslimah
      I'll help you with that.
Step 1: throw your phone out of the window. Don't go out to pick it up.
      Step 2: read a book.
      Hope that helps!

I highly recommend the app "Forest" :) It helps me focus on the tasks I have to do and I find myself being more productive when I use it. How it works is you set a timer, say, you want to work on your homework for 30 minutes, you plant a tree (Thus the name "Forest") and once you've planted it, you cannot leave the app! If you do leave the app, the tree will wither (tbh, it's really depressing) and that will serve as your motivation not to use your phone while you're working on something! You should totally check it out!

Turn off your phone if you feel you get distracted. The next time you try to go back to your phone, your phone will be off and stop yourself from turning it on

I set reading goals mostly for the books I don't enjoy much, because I often find myself in the middle of a series I'm not too excited about, but I don't like to leave the story unfinished, so I have to find a way to get through it as fast as I can.

You know I actually thought the opposite because she is taking English lit , RS and chemistry for her A levels. It would be interesting to know what she wanted to become though!

. مَۣـۗڪﮩًۣۖـرﯠهْہۣۛ. Just because you work hard doesn’t mean you will become a doctor you idiot, a doctor isn’t the only job in the world that shows you are smart because most doctors in the world are dumb people anyway. She’s more of a scholar kind of person and a creative person, so that just shows how dumb you are that you would think a book reader would turn to a medical, limiting position.

#1 way to read more books: Read easy material. Keep on reading, but don't forget to challenge yourself. She gives good advice.

I think the purpose of reading is not to actually remember everything from the book but to get little bit of this and that along the way through the end of the book. I read a lot as well and I do remember some parts i like or the quotes that related to me. It’s not like study for test so I think just get the main idea or the relating-to-you quotes is fine. Most people read for entertainment anyway.

You dont remember the whole damnplotline😂 you just remember the main stuff and more importantly the *feeling* you felt while reading. For example my favourite book(s) which were pretty dark and solemm in nature had such extensive plotlines that it took me weeks to explain it to my friend. months later i have no idea what had happened. But the emotions it took me through were such a rollercoaster ride😊
