    It isn't racist or disturbing. It's classist, but realistic. If your name is Jammall or Laquisha then your parents were most likely of lower economic status, whereas if you're black and your name is Jake or Kathy, then your parents might probably be college educated and higher income. Smart, successful black parents are not going to give their kids a name that sounds ghetto. But a teenage highschool dropout single mom might just name her baby something that sounds "cool" to her but which broadcasts the circumstances of her baby's origin and upbringing.

    • @waltereg0
      @waltereg0 9 лет назад +3

      +Jeronimo Vasquez V If all other things are equal, then yes. If there are two people who have exactly the same resume but one has a name that indicates that their parents are more educated and the other has a name that indicates that their family is more "ghetto", then the reasonable thing to do is give preference to the person who presents themselves better. So if there was an african-american named John and a white guy named Billy-Bob, then of course you're going to prefer the person named John. Everyone will at least do this unconsciously.

    • @animation1697
      @animation1697 9 лет назад +1

      +waltereg0 If i was a parent then i don't name my child Jammall because im poor or Jake because im a pimp and why do you think Billy-bob has no success in life? I don't know how employers in your world choose people to work with... A list with names maybe and you choose the people with the best names out?

    • @waltereg0
      @waltereg0 9 лет назад +3

      +A nimation Actually what you name your child does indeed indicate your socioeconomic status and education. So a child that has the burden (a tiny burden, but as the video shows, it exists) of that name will be less likely to be successful than a child that has a "regular" name. Employers choose the best candidate for the job, based on the information they have about a person they don't know, and a name is the first piece of information that they get. It's at the top of every resume, the first thing a stranger hears, the first thing an employer reads, so it has to have an effect, including in your world the same as mine. I'm sure in your culture or community there are names that signify a lower class. less educated background.

I am green eyed and on the pale side and I've had more than one person say "interesting name" or ask if it's a family name yet my mom never gets that and she is darker and brown eyed. I guess people expect Yolandas to be black or hispanic and when they see me, the name doesn't match the face

    How about going the opposite way. If your last name is Payne, for instance, does that make you more or less likely to become a dentist? I mean, would a person hesitate to go to a dentist named Dr. Payne, and should this discourage people named Payne from studying dentistry. Well, some very quick research on Google, I typed in "Dr. Payne DDS" and a whole bunch of dentists named "Payne" came up, so maybe being named "Payne" subconsciously connects a person to the study of dentistry. He/she is named "Payne", so this makes one subconsciously want to inflict "pain". Let the researchers dig into that.

    True story.
    I changed my name in 2012 from Richard to Rich, as in work, fb, introductions etc…. And I actually became Rich from that point. I went from a divorce at 26 to being able to retire at 35 this year 😂
    I believe that it’s a subconscious thing. If you say or hear the same thing over and over again… it is built into our subconscious belief.
    Some name it magical things such as ‘universal law’ some call it religion such as ‘speaking words over one another or prayer’ but it’s simply the subconscious mind and that’s why affirmations are so effective.

    There are alphabet surname effects as well. In the UK, we're 50-50 A-M and N-Z in the phone book (remember them?) But ... in positions of power, like MPs and military commanders, you're more likely to get 2/3 A-M and 1/3 N-Z. When you get to prime ministers, it's even more extreme: when I last counted, I think it was 22 A-M, and just 3 or 4 N-Z, including (of course) the last two. Before then we'd had only two (Wilson and Thatcher) since 1900, IIRC. Science and technology, by contrast, is heavily weighted towards the N-Zs, again by about 2/3 when I last looked ... and yes, I'm a scientist with a surname beginning with S.

    The reason behind name prejudice is actually more psychological than simple prejudice. This is because people are naturally drawn to other people with similarities to themselves as proven in several studies. Whether it be physical, mental, or by name. The best example of this would be public schools. All of the various cliques are clear as day with the nerds, jocks, geeks, and clowns. It's pretty easy to see that even within those cliques there will be smaller groups between race, hobbies, attitudes, etc. As such people with "white sounding names" are far more common than people with "black sounding names" meaning that people with those names are more likely to be hired over other people.

I have a white name. a Turkish white woman's name. i have experienced preference in workplaces and have gotten interviews very fast. the name bias is very true. also because I speak as though my parents taught at Yale employers make assumptions. my parents do speak like that lol. Several times when an employer was excited about my face to face after viewing my credentials and speaking with me on the phone i went in for the final interview and you should have seen their faces crack and drop when I came in....they were totally shocked and tried everything to squeeze out of hiring me for the project. they were literally at a loss for words and red faced. they could have assumed that i was a white female architect. lol. then they saw me. a copper toned almond shaped eyed not-white-by-a-long-shot female architect. lol experiences like this are LOADS of fun....

    I love that resume study. It's funny how everyone who cites it, leaves out the part where there's no difference in the hiring rate between the two resumes. Racist employers are no more likely to hire you if you're black, whether you have a white name or not. All putting a black sounding name on your resume does is save you the time of dealing with employers who were never going to hire you.
    Racism is a fact of human evolution. Same group preference will never leave the human genome. Making it illegal to harm people based on race is one thing, but this thought police BS is totally different.

    With how personal and almost primal one's name can be, is there a study about how one's feelings toward their name affects their personality or life? Since we ascribe so much of our identity to our name, how one feels about said name would have to affect us in many ways. Of course a challenge would still be the nature vs nature debate but if you take 2 people with the same name, one likes their name and one hates it what sort of difference could you expect? What about unique names vs generic/common ones? I have a generic name and never really liked it but seeing someone else with my same name and seeing how different their life seems always interested me. Some automatically assume a unique name will lead to bullying and thus parents shouldn't name their kids something that goes again the norm, but then what about those with unique names that rise to something greater despite or because of it?

    Max Powers, he's the man whose name you'd love to touch, but you mustn't touch! His name sounds good in your ear, but when you say it, you mustn't fear! Cause his name can be said, by anyone!

    This is actually really scary when you think of it. Names can affect the impression people have of you. Could you future be determined before you are even born? For example, Buzzfeed's video on names. What if your name is just an indication of what type of person you grow up to be? It's just frightening when you think of it.

    Let me say this up front: I'm a white dude with very, very common Anglo first and last names, the combination of which could be both "black" and "white." Like many white people, I too wondered about "black" first names, specifically those for females. Because I find the idea of ridiculing people's names repulsive, I became particularly repulsed by mockery of unique black female names once I discovered the method many of them are chosen: They are a combination of two or more names, most often the mother and father. For instance: Shaniqua could be "Shane" + "Monique" with an "a" added to the end to make it more feminine. I think this is a wonderful way to honor your forebears.
    To those of you who would criticize a name for being "made up," get this through your skull: ALL names were, at one point, made up. At some point in the future, I suspect "Dweezil" will be about as common as "Jimmy."

    What about the names that are for the opposite gender? For example, naming a girl Ryan, Brent or Tyler. I would say naming boys girl's names, but I haven't seen that happen, but I see girls named traditionally boy names all the time.

    What i heard that religions like islam, christianity , and Judaism believe that God put something into person's name that defines the personality. Like for example, all girls who have Sara's name are beautiful and have strong personality.

    Well people get my first name wrong all the time and it can also be used for a girl's name or a boys name. I got so sick of being called the wrong first name that I went by my middle name for a while. Everybody can get my middle name right but not my first name. I have a love hate thing with my first name. I like it but hate that everybody gets it wrong
