Having received word from patrols in the Formosa Strait of an Austrian task force moving north, a Japanese fleet assembled and, predicting the enemy fleet's likely course, began a barrier patrol not far from Liancourt Rock.
On the morning of the second, the Austrian fleet was sighted by the leading elements of the fleet, and a pitched battle commenced. However, the Japanese, expecting a powerful, modern fleet, were instead caught off guard with older vessels from nearly a decade prior.
