  • Health and Safety doesnt appear to have been a thing back in 1979!
Profile of the one and only Lancashire steeplejack Fred Dibnah. Fred demolishes unwanted chimneys the old fashioned way - brick by brick, starting at the top - or by taking bricks from the bottom and lighting a fire underneath. His scant regard for health and safety made him something of an anachronism even in the 1970s, while his infectious personality turned him into a beloved television institution. This is his first ever TV appearance.
Needless to say, don't try this at home or - more pertinently - on any large chimneys.
This clip is from Fred Dibnah: Steeplejack. Originally broadcast 6 September, 1979.

Aye, being from Yorkshire, I too find it slightly grating, but he's a northerner, so we'll let him off.

Imagine a bad day at work; you get up there, you've had enough, you start working and the hammer falls out of your hand...

Bolton in the 1970s80sand 90s was a pretty decent town, now it's as dead as the grave just begging and shoplifting, but even that's dying away due to the lack of shops. But it's always nice to know we lived in a different time then, tough but good, and we always had fred to cheer us up.

7000 then was probably worth a lot more then compared to today's money, because the cost of living then was cheaper against today's inflation boomed country
