So to Gadamer-through language and the dialectic we are striving ultimately to Become more compassionate and universal creatures capable of discerning the spiritual human richness beneath the grey, appropriated materials of the “empirical” world.

Yes. Nice introduction. But you have to love the irony of @2:50 "...avoiding the intellectual sins of the past", given that the concept of "sin" itself is a pre-modern Judeo-Christian idea. In short, it's THE idea that ALL modern thinkers UNANIMOUSLY rejected as archaic, and even barbaric, which of course it is.

Zizek’s Hegel/Lacan are very much alive in Gadamer.

Thanks, very enjoyable. Is it possible to use past tenses when talking about the past? When you use the present tense to talk about the past, you limit the range of meanings you can produce and make some temporal relationships uncertain.

His audience didn't have the historical or philosophical language necessary to uncover Gadamer's argument, which rather poignantly proves Gadamer's hermeneutical point!

Kant didn't base his deontological ethics on taste and thus make them "very subjective". He based his ethics on reason and the only thing "subjective" about it is that anyone can only use his/her own reason and is only obliged to perfect him-/herself. Kant uses "subjective" a bit different than her

Really, this is a short biographical presentation. Here; I find nothing objectionable. However, in terms of understanding his philosophical works -most notably in Truth and Method () or the collection of essays , there is no meaningful discussion or exegesis here: which would have been difficult in any case. Yet, it seems to me that even the opening lines of the presentation seem to go awry: Gadamer's notion of hermenutics is radical, quite literally in that it seeks to 'go to the root,' and difficult. It's untrue to say that it is the "standard standard account of truth and meaning in the humanities," -certainly not in terms of practice; though it may be true to say that his work is given lip service by most academics in literature, some in law (notably Dworkin) and other disciplines in the humanities. I leave out philosophy, since many philosophers who engage his thought do, in fact, give it more than lip service and are able to understand that radicality. I am afraid, in my opinion, Dr. Frazier does not.

G 7 meeting this weekend ,the intractable issue of Brexit with now Boris in charge his general demeanour as he meets Merkel and Macron gives a sense of a willingness to dialogue with the aim to amalgamate more than to dialogue with a view to dislocate. Time will Tell.
Or we might see a resurgence of Tribalistic Bipartisanship that can only lead to fragmentation disdain dissociation dismay and War.

What is the relation of Gadamers hermeneutics and the contemporary strains of philosophical and psychological constructivism? Was there ever a direct confrontation or did these developments/schoos ever exange their ideas and concepts? Because they seem similar, yet seem to emerge from different cultural backgrounds or, if you will, from different types of intellectual personality types.

You are so sooo mean Jessica !--- leaving me behind with a few simple questions- Where does our sense for truth come from?-What defines in simple terms truth? What is being truthful to oneself?-And why--in your Hindu-philosophy courses is it not much about seeking the Truth of life -but more about the reality beyond - or hidden within - reality. also would have loved to know --why knowing the search for or making a durable definition Truth tops a to be developed capacity of Love. Especially by these dry intellectuals you mentioned....Did Krishna ...not give us a huge hint?

Seeking truth (s) by observing and logic....a typical pastime for armchair philosophers and modern pillow-dwelling (western) mystics. Men who are afraid to surrender to live (inner and outer) full heartedly, truthfulness to Self is the entrance.

I have followed Jessica -always great regarding Upanishads - but this..??...what is this ??...her with this post-modern empty head of a philosopher--this philosophical stutterer Gadamer who like all such dry intellectual guys cannot relate to reality with their full soul , feeling and psychic life and produce very one-sided views -a reality reduced to abstraction and word. What about Jessica..have you forgotten? ...Moksha as result of 'realized' knowledge..(result from a lived life-genuine love and truthful to the core)...of life..that produces 'Personality" as an embodiment of conscious-awareness...living word and truth.
