They say that monarchs do not marry for love. But this rule was bypassed by the Greek king Constantine. All his life he loved only one woman - his Anna-Maria, with whom he lived for almost 60 years. The love story of the dashing heir to the Greek throne and the youngest of the three Danish royal daughters began with a state visit to Denmark; King Paul and Queen Consort Federica of Hanover brought their children with them and decided to bring them to the circus in Copenhagen. It was the King of Greece who first noticed Anna Maria, who was only 13 years old at the time, and said to his wife: “Look, she is as graceful as a butterfly. I hope one day Tino marries her."
Tino - Konstantin - was the third cousin of the princess and he was 18 years old. At that time, European royal families were connected by blood ties, so the two cousins had many chances not only to meet, but also to marry.
After some time, Tino visited Denmark. He alternately accompanied all three Danish princesses (Margrethe, now Queen of Denmark, Benedict and Anna Maria herself). He managed to hide the real reason for his visits and the press initially suspected that the prince wanted to court Benedict.
Konstantin intended to get married and his parents did not deny him this happiness. The engagement announcement was made on January 23, 1963. in Copenhagen. Both royal families stepped onto the balcony of Amelienborg Palace to greet the crowd. But the wedding was postponed until the princess came of age. King Frederick, in addition to considering his daughter too young for marriage, wanted her to complete her education. Thus, 16-year-old Anna-Maria returned to her boarding school in Switzerland, and 22-year-old Konstantin plunged into his official duties.
This royal wedding was the first and last ever to take place in Athens, and of course its scale was truly cosmic. The truly royal ceremony combined the Orthodox Greek rite with the traditions of European monarchical dynasties.
