  • A Music Theory IV Response to COVID-19
This piece was written using a 12-tone row. Each section of the piece has a specific meaning, which is outlined below.
    Mm. 1-8: dance-like rhythm; cheerful
-This is the week leading up to the announcement that, due to Covid-19, we would all be going home for the semester. I was oblivious and carefree,
Mm. 9-10: Descending notes as fast as possible.
-This is the world as I knew it falling apart literally in a matter of hours as I heard the announcement we’d be going home and not coming back.
    Mm. 11-17: Very slow; melancholy
-The sadness I felt as I processed leaving SAU and life as I knew it
Mm. 18-26: Notes played as quickly as possible interrupted by a few very slow notes.
-This is the chaos and stress of trying to pack up my room in time to catch my flight. In the midst of the chaos though, you can hear spots where the chaos is interrupted and time literally slowed down as I stopped to say goodbye to those closest to me at SAU.
Mm. 27-32- Light and cheerful again with some loud exclamations
-This is the hilarity my brother and roommate and I experienced while trying to get home amidst Covid-19. The loud exclamations are all the obstacles we encountered along the way such as canceled flights, missed flights, airport changes, and lost baggage.
Mm. 33-37: Moderately slow; tranquil; with humming.
-This is the peace and simplicity of life at home during quarantine. It also represents laziness and lack of motivation and a moment of high stress because of procrastination on homework. There is an undertone/sense of something not being right represented by the extended technique of humming and playing at the same time.
