Woody, I totally LOVED that you just stopped reviewing the insides of your DX-7 for checking out that car, even taking us with you! As Carlo said, you reviews are personal and that makes them really enjoyable! Thanks again!
Hey Woody, the way you make these videos makes me feel like I'm there with you! These are not the classical "pro videos", these are YOUR videos and I'm there with you, in your home, in your everyday life, this is so human, fantastic! :D
I really enjoyed this video! You seem like such a nice guy and your passion and reverence for the Yamaha DX7 is equal to my own. Your respect for this instrument shows that you do care that these pieces of history deserve to be passionately preserved and (thankfully) shared on the internet. Oh and that car ....!!!
I can remember that lots of craps used to come in by the cartridge slot ! The metal ones could be armful... But nothing compares to the crazy things I found in the Fender Rhodes I had to fix during more than 15 years. Could fill a drawer of curiosities !
The ease of access to the innards of the DX7 is genius. A real contrast to let's say a D-50 which requires a lot of disassembly especially if you need to remove the keybed. (Which is required from time to time due to failing keys)
I admire your courage for opening a device outside and putting screws in the pocket of your shirt! It's like asking for losing parts very easily and making them very hard to find again.
Thanks for this interesting video! I looked at it with emotion, because I was the proud owner of one of the very first DX7s in France in 1983. One day I took a friend on my bike and we drove 200km to Metz where I knew this brand new DX7 was on display. After trying it, I managed to convince the boss of the store to sell it to me. Finally, the three of us left on my motorcycle: my friend, me plus the DX7 packed in a box with strings 8-) A memorable trip; we were young and maybe a little crazy :-) -- Merci pour cette intéressante vidéo !
The DX models are rock solid! So cool to see this clip! I am familiar with a few of the later models, dx7S and dx7FD, and love them! Vintage performers! :-)
Great page Woody! I acquired a DX7 and used one of your videos to help me restore the factory presets, which has also in turn opened the possibility of accessing hundreds more patches, presets and ROMS. Thank you! Jake (London, UK.)
My DX7 MK1 had obviously been stored under a bed for years since it was full of carpet fluff. And used by a smoker, as the keys weren't far off the same colour as the body... I took them all off (they simply press towards the back and "unhook"), soaked them all warm water and a little bleach... It looked fantastic when finished!
Wow wow!! both engines were GORGEOUS!! :-)) I love vintage cars, too. As much as vintage synths, buy my pocket don't...LOL. Great vid Woody, thanks 4 the uploading!
Hi, learning about frequency modulation just lead me too your channel. Thank you, the DX7 and D10 were the sounds and instruments of my teenage years. x
Nice surprise from 1966. We had a 64. Around here (southern California, US) they were turned into low riders. In 1981, the neighbor went psycho and shot several nasty holes in the side. Luckily, they didn't puncture the gas tank. That is a wonderful purr from the engine.
What’s inside my DX7? A programmable engine with a the mathematical number of possible sound variations totaling into the millions True sound making power! This is the greatest synthesizer in the history of the world No other synthesizer can make this claim
3:54 that was SICK!!! a lot of people wouldn't stop their video to check out a car. They would probably get annoyed and film everything over again. You're cool keep up the cool vids.
Thanks to this channel, I now know how to open my DX7 and poke around it it. My Dx7 is having a problem where when I'm playing it, it, for some reason keeps automatically switching to either patch 8 or patch 24. I'm thinking that there's some kind of problem with those membrane switches in that area of the keyboard considering that they're right on top of one another. It looks like that board is easy to get at and I'm willing to bet it will be easy to check for shorts and very easy to clean or replace those switches.
I just came across your channel while looking up Yamaha dx7 videos. I’ve been watching a RUclips called the 8 bit guy and I’m always fascinated at the insides of keyboards and electronics. I’m highly considering buying a Yamaha dx7 because I’m super into 80s music. My dad was in a band in the 80s and has prophet keyboards such as the prophet 2000 prophet 1!
I use to work for an electronic company soldering and desoldering... thanks and sorry for the typo.... I live in the states do you know of any American companies that sell those particular synthesizer batteries?
Hello Woody I’m having a problem with my dx7 and can’t find it. Has I play in the keyboard sometimes randomly I have a note playing « ghost note » without me playing it. It wasn’t hookup in midi or anything like that. It’s the A note ToP right. Now I’ve tried to Cleanup the keyboard but it didn’t again, well less then before...if you have any ideas , thank you :)
Any advice on how effective this instrument is as a mother/MIDI keyboard? Any comments on its general touch sensitivity, whether or not it has aftertouch yes/no (although not important), the weight of the keys (light/heavy) or how (as an older synth) it's MIDI volume range only goes to 99 whereas the standard now is 127 (does it really matter?) would be welcome thanks...
You're lucky the stapler didn't short circuit some of the electronics, or you'd have one nasty surprise. Also, moving loose junk around isn't the best thing to do. Having given unsolicitedadvice, I enjoyed watching the video. Keep them coming!
Nice car, better than my 1972 Pontiac Grand Prix I had that I sold early 2017. I just picked up an original DX7 for $140 but button 25 isn't working or the mod wheel. Thinking about opening it up and having a go at fixing it. Nice video!
You seem to know a lot about these Yamaha DX7’s . I seem to have altered all of the voices on my DX ‘1’ cartridge. Do you know of a way to get it back to the normal instruments please ?
If I heard something rattling around inside a synth I wouldn't switch it on to check functionality first. i'd open it up and remove the foreign objects before plugging it in. That staple could easily have lodged between components on the boards and shorted critical connections. That aside, it's in great condition inside considering its age!
thans for u video is very very nice, i have 4 (DX7) and 2 DX7D, are great souns, and the detail of the car, is great, Beautiful car... bestregards from Guadalajara Jal Mex,,,
I see a lot of old Chevys being that I am from Flint, MI aka Vehicle City (they assembled some 66' Impalas, a mile or so, from my house) but I don't often see that particular 66' in Marina Blue. Very nice and that thing was as clean as the day it passed inspection - top notch. Nice, brown DX7, too. I've never seen one of those. I had something loose in my Yamaha SY77 and it turned out to be the transformer and it's screw(s). yikes... I opened it up (not nearly as easy as the DX7) and "fixed it" but it's came loose, again... Still works, 100% but I need to open it up and fix it, for good, as I don't want it breaking on me.
@Woody Piano Shack where did you buy your Yamaha DX7? i live in the United States and i want one for my music idk any good websites to get one i film videos on my youtube channel and i wanna use one for my videos how do you like the DX7?
Nice inside view. It is build with 8- bit Hitachi microcprocessor HD63803 at 2 MHz, compatible with Motorola 6800. You can also see PIO 8255, M5M5118P static RAM's banks 2KB, EPROM and lots of logic chips. And yes classic transformer.
It's a good thing you got that paper clip out. If it had somehow worked it's way into the power supply you could have had some major damage done there.
the vst comparison is in the can, will upload in a couple of weeks. the result was very interesting, you will like it. i know somebody with a voica, will ask him. does it load dx7 patches straight off so I can do a shootout?
Mate. I've just discovered your awesome channel so forgive me if you've been told this loads of times - but you sound so so like the English comic Adam Buxton doing his reading out youtube comments routine :) Subbed. Keep up the great work.
Nice electronics when quality was quality. Good Japan components not like today’s cheap China parts. That’s why things like this last 30 years and more. Built to last. You could mod the internal battery and get a solder in clip for it so will be easy to replace in future.
Built to last, and built to repair when something does go wrong. Things now are just built to throw out when it breaks, cause they want you to just buy another, or buy a newer version. It’s so wasteful.
Watch a video about a DX7 and it turns in to a car related video. :) Thanks for the look inside the DX7. I used to share a place with a friend who bought a DX7 that he said was previously owned by Oscar Peterson. I remember experimenting with the programming of the synth. My friend moved away many years ago. I don't know if he still has the instrument. BTW, the drive around in the car made it possible to locate your house. I don't live on the same continent so I won't be dropping in for tea any time soon.
This video made me subscribe because I love the sound of the DX7 and of the V8 engine :) (I have a Volvo with a straight-5 engine, which is the next best thing sound-wise after a V8, at least to my ears)
Did you notice there is no Earth on the mains wire, my DX9 looks exactly the same inside, I'm currently changing the battery and adding a battery holder so future battery changes will be a sinch to do in the future.
Mine has a "twinflex" power cord which is odd for an appliance with a metal case. I noticed where it is soldered to the board the soldering job is pretty rough so reckon it's been re-corded by someone dodgy .
Hey Woody! I have a question about my Yamaha DX7. A small piece came off, that I would like to send you a picture of to see if you may assist me. Once the small piece came off, the key does not want to play anymore. Is there a way that I can send you a pic of what I am talking about?
Yeah those antique cars are super cool. But maybe that's why the arctic is heating up faster than the rest of the planets- because Scandinavians are driving those gas guzzlers!
The DX-7 mk1, and the Ensoniq Mirage, are the only two synths I've ever seen that have a hinged front panel... Not sure which copied from which though... ;-)
but man, what a ride! I remember those old big ass GM cars. my family always had Buicks. they were huge, roomy, smooth. but man they did suck the gas. and yes, I opened up one of the DX7 I had years ago. nothing wrong with it - I just wanted to see what was in there.
Woody, I totally LOVED that you just stopped reviewing the insides of your DX-7 for checking out that car, even taking us with you! As Carlo said, you reviews are personal and that makes them really enjoyable! Thanks again!
thank you so much, made my day!

hi carlo, awesome comment thanks. that's pretty much what I'm aiming for, so thank you for the feedback, it's very encouraging to me.
This is what drew me to your channel as well - you're like an old mate I've known for years somehow, haha!
"Flippin'g heck!" I'm loving these videos. Keep them coming. :)
"Flippin' Heck"...? Are you a fellow Yorkshireman?
I feel this video deserves two likes: Excellent view of the inside of a DX7 and a bonus classic car video.
Everything i love, cool sounds from synth AND cars.. WOW. And also great weather.
yeah, everything came together for me that sunday!
@@WoodyPianoShack TMI ;-) LOL
I loved your video! And yes: my best friend had one of these in the 80s, and it always amazed me that it was wonderfully BROWN!
Whats inside? A heavenly glow appears , some say its the soul of an angel.
think Pulp Fiction, just like that
I really enjoyed this video! You seem like such a nice guy and your passion and reverence for the Yamaha DX7 is equal to my own. Your respect for this instrument shows that you do care that these pieces of history deserve to be passionately preserved and (thankfully) shared on the internet. Oh and that car ....!!!
stan, very much enjoyed reading your comment, thanks buddy.

Great to see the quality of the construction. And that your neighbours also have interesting hobbies....
The image of a kid slipping those bits through the slit on the back made me chuckle. That's cool the guy let you go on a ride in that sweet car :)
MacGyver would have made it an DX7 II with the parts you took out.
The ease of access to the innards of the DX7 is genius. A real contrast to let's say a D-50 which requires a lot of disassembly especially if you need to remove the keybed. (Which is required from time to time due to failing keys)

i'm glad other people maintain these classic vehicles, i sure don't want to but I enjoy seeing them
Yep, same to me, already rewarding to see these gems on the asphalt, in so mint condition.
Me, too!! ;)
Thank you Woody that was an awesome video right here to classics in one video all the best to you brother/

thankfully that kind of thing never happens over here!
Awesomeness! :) Look at the size of the individual components. This was a considerable amount of time before surface mount tech was main stream.
Wow, they are so well put together
the don't make 'em like they used to...
Woody I really love this channel! Cheers from Argentina
great video! love how you just had to capture that Muscle Car.
What’s inside my DX7?

Wow, Yamaha on a Roland stand, fun. That car was cool, source eI live in Michigan so it was probably built here back in the day.
wow, fantastic synth and a brilliant car too!
hi. I just subscribed to ur awesome channel. love the variety from synths to video games, tutorial, reviews, etc...
glad to have you as sub, yeah we mix it up around here!
Your videos are very interesting and diverse :) Thank you!
What a cool neighborhood. What a cool Chevy Super Sport!
Mate , be careful of vacuum nozzles I think they can harbour a lot of static charge for some reason and can zap components
5:37 Oh my god this tune again!!! And this time with reverb on the drums. I'm in love with that track!
Back at this video again! I love. these, more random, videos! Also you buying synths was cool!
I found a pound coin inside my SuperNova...no idea how it got there! I bought a lottery ticket with it and won...£10. Get that for an investment!
such a flippin' nice guy! what a dude.
That car is SWEET!
This is great, the car part.. just so nice haha !!
Do you drive this car without one screw on the front left wheel?
you sir, amaze me! how the hell did you notice that? very observant!

You are so lucky!!
Yamaha DX7 is immortalized in many hit songs from the 80s
Brave man opening that where it's easy to lose things through the table and into the long grass
Great fun video. Loved going off on a tangent with the car lol.
Was the very last piece of music from the DX7?
hi, yes it was a fun project! the music was from the DX7 although I didn't compose it myself.
I found in mine Grey Matter Expand .Thank you Woody
you won the lottery!
How would I reset my DX7 to get the factory sounds???
My dx7 volume slider is not working properly. Really don't know what to do. Volume is not gradual, either it's too loud or it cuts off completely.
Woody Piano Shack, do they still selll batteries for all model DX7's and how often do you have to change out the battery every 10 years?
yeah, not an issue to get batts, but they are soldered to the motherboard, so you need some skills. probably 10 years or so.
I use to work for an electronic company soldering and desoldering... thanks and sorry for the typo.... I live in the states do you know of any American companies that sell those particular synthesizer batteries?
To hell with the DX7...That Car! What a beauty!

it's a really nice feeling synth keyboard, some say the best ever, but the 99 is a problem if you're playing synths/pianos that expect to receive 127.
great video Woody....I see that you have done a trip this American car🚘😁awesome 😁happy weekend.
Daro 🖒
first time for me in a big classic yank car, hope it won't be the last.
Got me interested more in the vintage car then in the keyboard! 🇲🇹😊
applies probably to 99% of viewers!
You're lucky the stapler didn't short circuit some of the electronics, or you'd have one nasty surprise.
Also, moving loose junk around isn't the best thing to do.

Keep them coming!
Nice car, better than my 1972 Pontiac Grand Prix I had that I sold early 2017. I just picked up an original DX7 for $140 but button 25 isn't working or the mod wheel. Thinking about opening it up and having a go at fixing it. Nice video!
Did you fix it?
You seem to know a lot about these Yamaha DX7’s . I seem to have altered all of the voices on my DX ‘1’ cartridge. Do you know of a way to get it back to the normal instruments please ?
LOL nice video man :-) Thanks for sharing. I hope yout DX7 lasts another 35 years :-)
Very nice video! Greetings from Brasil!
Very cool! The burn-out is a great lead-in to to a song / music video. I may borrow it! (Naw - you do it!)
go for it!
That's great! Loved the ride in the Chevy.
DX7 on a roland stand - yes! Match made in heaven.
If I heard something rattling around inside a synth I wouldn't switch it on to check functionality first. i'd open it up and remove the foreign objects before plugging it in.
That staple could easily have lodged between components on the boards and shorted critical connections.
That aside, it's in great condition inside considering its age!
Awesome videos!

found it locally on equivalent on craig's list, they are plentiful, you see them all the time! it was great, really enjoyed owning one.
@@WoodyPianoShack Nice i wish i had one do they still them still? also i got my PSR-SX900 back in 2019 and i love it

awesome video
Got mine yesterday. Very good condition almost mint. Lol I seem to like the same synths you do. Last one on my to get list is a wavestation.
How much was it?
Notice the new Korg WaveState ;-)
loving that hinge
Did you compose that track around 6:00? It sounds so very DX-7...
it was all dx7 but not my composition
What’s the name of the song playing while he’s cleaning it?
it's the "dx7 song" on soundcloud
Can anyone tell me why my DX7 is reading 4.6 volts? Tune adjust doesnt work either
cool!i ve done clening in some of the keybords i had and i removed each key and clean it individually...a mess
yeah, hope i never have to do that...
The 5th screw on my dx7 at the rear is on the opposite end as yours. Odd. Mine has a pretty low serial number.
haha, great observation Ross!
MERICA! lol Looking forward to the DX7 vs VST's! Maybe you could find a Volca FM to compare too?
the vst comparison is in the can, will upload in a couple of weeks. the result was very interesting, you will like it. i know somebody with a voica, will ask him. does it load dx7 patches straight off so I can do a shootout?
