- Luckily for me it wasn't a very good impression! 😅 PLEASE NOTE: It was clear that this saddle was not fitting correctly which was causing discomfort when it slipped and general tension in anticipation of the saddle moving/slipping, so Magic's owner got him a brand new saddle a couple of days after this lesson which fits him really well and Magic is now back to his normal happy & slightly less spicy self!! It really is amazing just how much tack fit can change a horses behaviour from one day to the next, which is why it's always important to regularly check your tack still fits correctly! Horses often change shape throughout the year and so often 'bad behaviour' is put down to the horse just being 'naughty' or 'fresh', when in fact they are uncomfortable. Fortunately Magic's owner and this yard are on the ball and so lucky Mr Magic gets whatever he needs! ❤️
I feel like this lesson needs a bit of an explanation, so here we go!: Magic warmed up in this lesson really nicely - he was pretty relaxed, but also very off my leg which was great! He even relaxed a bit more in the canters than usual and opened up his stride a little bit which is something that can be quite difficult for him in the school. You can see we also trotted over the poles on the ground with no issues as he was feeling pretty chill about life.
The first little incident was when Magic spooked at some bikes going along the road by the arena (it was very wet so they were making a funny noise and whizzing by very fast), so he had a quick bolt down the school to try to get away from them - he’s done it before so I wasn’t too worried about it, but during the little bolt the saddle unfortunately slipped slightly which Magic found uncomfortable, so he bronced round the school to try and get it off (nothing naughty about that, a perfectly natural reaction to the circumstances!). Luckily he was a good boy and stopped once he’s realised hopping around wasn’t getting him anywhere so I could get off and fix it. Also massive apologies to the other rider who I yelled “STOP!” at, I wasn’t sure if she’d seen what was happening and I didn’t want to crash into her as she cantered past!!
Once the saddle was fixed it was too late, the spicy dragon had been awakened and of the rest of the little broncs and squeals after I re mounted were mainly Magic being a cheeky monkey! 🙈 The saddle stayed where it was supposed to be for the rest of the lesson, but rather unhelpfully the horses turned out in the next door field suddenly decided to have a mad galloping rodeo party of their own, and a bit later an unknown horse came trotting down the road by the arena at full speed (something that sets Magic off at this time of year as his "YaY hUnTiNg!" brain kicks in and sends him a bit loopy)!! He was also most likely anticipating the saddle slipping again over the poles, which set him on edge until he finally realised it wasn’t going to happen again. From that point on, Magic decided that actually, jumping around all over the place was really much more fun than schooling and he’d like to do some more of it please!! This was made even more obvious by his squealing and snorting - something he only does when he gets over excited and wants to go zoomies, so please don’t worry thinking he was uncomfortable or hurting after the initial saddle slip!!
Once he’d got out some of his excess energy, he actually worked quite well and relaxed back into his normal self. He did the pole exercise in trot calmly and we decided to call it a day there as we had finished on a positive note with a much happier & more relaxed pony (and a relieved human)! As mentioned above, his owner was aware of the issue of the saddle slipping and he now has a brand new saddle that fits well and that Magic seems really happy in!! 😇

The second his head went down i was thinking sit back, hold on! But you sat through it really well
well done for staying on! I had a saddle slip incident and ended up with it rolling to the side so much I came off. Fortunately it was whilst the horse was stood still so it wasn't too bad. Girth was a bit dodgy so that ended up being thrown away and replaced.

I too had a saddle slip incident but because of how 'fast' (cantering but he spooked and someone took off) my horse was going I ended up falling off and fracturing a vertebrae

Equestrian Jess In this instance I knew there was something wrong (saddle) that was making the horse act this way, so it didn’t knock my confidence as I knew there was a fixable reason behind it and that he probably wouldn’t do it again. When something unexpected happens on a horse or where the ‘scary thing’ might happen over and over again, like bucking, bolting, rearing etc, I always think it’s best to take things back to basics and build back up slowly, so both you and the horse have time to clear your heads and forget about the bad thing that happened. It also means you can pinpoint exactly what it is that sends the horse over the edge and makes it act up (assuming it is not in any physical pain). The worst thing you can do when you’ve had a serious confidence knock is to push yourself really hard, because you’re bound to end up scaring yourself even more, which then translates across to the horses behaviour and it all spirals out of control from there.
If possible, and if you think it would help, it sometimes helps to try riding a different, ‘known to be safe’ horse for a while - a safe, sensible horse can do absolute wonders to get your confidence built up before jumping back on to more challenging horses. It’s also really helpful to work with a trainer/instructor who understands what you’re feelings are so that they can encourage and gently (but safely) push you from the ground, without making you do anything you’re not comfortable with. A lot of experienced trainers will know exactly how far to push a client in order to make them feel confident and happy in their riding and can help you with any problems or fears that arise along the way. x

QOTD: yes. She was so happy to work again I couldn't even get on her. She reared up and when she got down she just gave me a look "why aren't you on my back yet. LETS GO HUMAN". It was also during a jumping lesson so she jumped the fences higher and activated her kicker and would buck after the jumps. And she would get mad at herself if she touched the poles which resulted in an angry mare stare and buck😂😂 it was a fun lesson

My horse Jacob gets excited doing all most anything 😂 he gets excited doing grids, going hacking , going to the field , doing cross country , being with other horses in a lesson so he's very excitable 😂

QOTD: Well boy do I have a story for you. About two weeks ago I was riding a horse named Ike. He decided while my trainer was fixing my stirrups (they literally fell off of the leathers) he was trotting in tiny circles around her and he wouldn't stop despite me pulling and leaning back, so my trainer got frustrated with me when I literally couldn't do anything (Ike was getting antsy). After that I couldn't get him to slow down so he was basically always about to transition into the trot, but when we actually tried to trot he just wouldn't go. Lots of excitement and then he turned stubborn. I'm probably going to ride him again and I'm very nervous lol.

Great video. QOTD: I've been on a horse that bronked cause she was fresh kept spooking at something in a corner and it was always the same corner. We were outside as well. Another few times I've rode a 13.2hh pony and she bucks everytime I asked for the canter. Never fallen off when that happened. Only once another pony but 14hh bucked cause she was happy and enjoying a jumping lesson.

QOTD: There's a lovely warmblood at the stables where I ride on a Tuesday, his name is Charlie! When we jump, however, he suddenly turns into a stag - a cross pole turns into a jump over the moon 😂 He also loves a good bolt around the school when he decides the lesson is going too quietly for his liking! I haven't ridden him too often, but generally other than the infrequent bolting, he is quite a good boy :) (He has had his saddle and back checked in case that's what made him bolt, but all seems to be well, he just enjoys life in the fast lane!)

You may never see this, since I'm posting two weeks after this video was shared...I love your videos, but this one is especially wonderful, because you and your trainer handled all of that so well! It's frightening when stuff like this happens, but you handled it so calmly and had empathy for Magic. Impressive stuff.

He also gets very annoyed if u don't let him go, like one time I was in a group lesson and he really wanted to go fast so he bucked rly high and bolted straight to the back of the ride 😂

I was riding my pony a month or so ago (black one in my profile picture) who is only 4. His girth wasn’t tight enough whilst we were cantering and it slipped and he bolted around the arena. I stayed on for a while but when it turned fully to under his stomach I fell with it, resulting in me almost falling over the fence as we were on the long side or getting trampled when I fell underneath him (he was careful with his legs so he didn’t trample me bless him) but he continued around the arena with the saddle under his belly and it was the most terrifying thing that’s ever happened to me. Now my first instinct is to check my girth. Be careful riding everyone! Ps. You sat him so well Claire, well done! 💞
Your a great rider and ik you go through many situations like this and it’s very hard to control your horse when he’s spicy!

In my riding school there is a gelding named Kalle. He has been in the riding school the longest but he is probably the hardest to ride. He is EXTREMELY stubborn and never does what he is told right away. You have to prove that you are the alpha to him first. Once, there was a banana lying on the fence by the arena during a lesson, he had his eyes on it the entire lesson and suddenly, he decided that he should eat it and so he did. No other horse thought about it.

@@hanniras I know I just want to know where you got this "leader" idea from in the first place. I've had horses and dogs alike, all well and fully trained and I've never had to be a "leader" towards them. People who don't believe that you and an animal can have a functioning team dynamic kind of upset me, the animal should want to be good, not be forced.
@@youreinvalid8493 I understand where you are coming from, it is important to work with the horse but (this is just a guess!) I think what he/she meant was that the rider is meant to be telling the horse what to do, not the other way round. I think he/she worded it differently and that's what made it sound a bit odd.. Again this is just a guess

I rode this pony yesterday and her name is Maisy. She gets quite strong and quick when jumping and refuses a lot. She’s still learning and quite young so hopefully she’ll break her speedy habits!
Well sat and well done for continuing with the lesson on him. From the video he appears quite fresh and then him bolting pushing the saddle back definitely didn't help. He is an owned horse rather than a school horse and they can be a bit more firey. Luckily you stayed on but it will be a lesson you won't forget. Over the years I have had several horses and ponies rodeo with me, never nice. Glad the tack has been replaced.

I had a day like this last week. I have been back in the saddle for a few months now. We are working on my confidence in general and in canter. Well pony had other ideas, first of all didn't want to go out of the stable couldn't get him to move, warmed up nicely then when we moved onto the transition section sand went into canter he threw a massive buck, scared me half to death. Turns out it was because when I went into canter I tensed (a thing I do a lot hence the confidence building) and told him to slow down he basically told me to make up my mind he did it another time for good measure. Slightly nervous for tomorrow. Sorry for the long comment and love the videos!! ❤️

The last thing you need is internet trainer but what I do when my horse is a psycho I make sure she's on a bend. It stops her looking an spooking and makes in difficult to run away with me! Just a wee bit of advice! You're an amazing rider and I admire you so much! 💚💚💚💚

Was riding one of the horses at my stable who is prone to the occasional spook but is also considered probably the most ‘bomb-proof’ of all our horses. However this particular lesson he decided that jumping was very fun indeed and was speeding around as fast as possible (including throwing in a tighter turn than expected that ever scared him). When we were supposed to finish off the lesson with a nice calm canter to the back of the ride, he decided this was all very very exciting and decided to canter at full speed sideways down the long side and just bolt another lap around, blatantly refusing to listen to me asking him to stop so yeah, unsure if he was uncomfortable or just really enjoying a good run, I believe his ears were forward so it seemed more like he was enjoying it

PonyCam he truly is an honest gentleman though and I know he would never have done it if the person riding him had not been confident
Sophie Wood We have a pony exactly like that, he’s so capable, but will test any riders who push him a bit harder, but he’s an absolute sweetheart when it comes to young or unconfident riders. It’s east to forget how intuitive and kind horses can be ❤️
PonyCam that’s exactly like this horse at my yard honestly, he’s getting old but he’s the sweetest horse going and he can really show his young side when he’s feeling spicy. They really are some of the smartest animals the way they can understand the feelings of their riders

You sat that really well! It's funny, from the angle of the GoPro, the bolting and bucking seemed much more severe. But the video from someone on the ground made it look a bit tamer. Just goes to show that things feel worse (or bigger) when you're sitting in the saddle!
Yes it certainly wasn't as bad as it looked on the GoPro version, everything always seems a bit faster from higher up!
My horse gets REALLY excited when he sees a jump even though he does dressage😂 so one day I jumped him and after he just bucked me off and jumped the cross pole over and over 🤣 love him still

QOTD: I recently started loaning a pony who hadn't been in the school much for a while before I got on her. After being told by her owner "she's lovely to ride, and so well behaved!" she got completely over excited and we had squealing, rearing and bronking! No horse has ever done that to me before and it scared the pants off me! But I've persevered, and a month later she's back to her normal self, she's really enjoying her schooling, and if we do have an excited moment it doesn't scare me any more, we can work through it. I keep telling myself all experience is good experience!

Claudia & Giulia No I’ve actually never competed in my life!! (Not sure a riding school competition, jumping a 5x 1ft cross pole ‘course’ [just round the edge of a field], in walk/trot, where I came 5th out of 6, when I was about 13, and won a ‘well done for taking part’ rosette, really counts) 😂❤️

QOTD: Yep a pony called Bonnie at my riding school. No one in my group rides her but I’ve jumped her a few times and she’s definitely wild and crazy. Bolting in the canter. Rushing after the fences. The rushing after the fences I’d be fine with if it wasn’t for her also putting her head down causing my reins to slip and me to end up on her neck🙈but she jumps with me. I’ve seen many people from my other group try to jump her and she always stops. My instructor always says that Bonnie likes me riding her or else she wouldn’t jump so I guess that’s great at least😂haven’t fallen off her yet but I’ve sat on her neck once and hung on the side of her neck once as well😬

rode a horse in my last lesson that was having a little bit too much fun on an unusually windy day and just happens to know a little trick for how to get people off his back 😂 got me off then looked all sorry and sad so i forgave him and got back on. The little jerk had the audacity to do it again and try snd look pitiful the second time! My trainer had me go get a different beast while she got on him for a bit 😂😂😂

QOTD: I rode a pony yesterday called mickey who is known at the yard for being a lil bit of a spaz monster - it was only my second time riding him and the first trot was really nice and he looked gorgeous but in the second trot he decided to zoom and we cantered around the arena 🙈then we were trotting a pole course (that the older people were gonna jump) and he was a complete mess 🙈 one of the older girls had to try and lead him round the course while I sat there and tried to stay on 🙈 I couldn't tell what he was doing but I think there were some bucks in there 😅🙈 eventually we 'trotted' down the long side to the back of the ride 🙈 it was a fun lesson overall and he is now my favourite to ride xx

Adele Wolfton I used to feel like this too! It was only until I rode a little Welsh x Shetland on a weekly basis that I didn’t anymore! It think it’s a case of letting your instructor know how your feeling, and not pushing yourself too far until your ready! You handled that really well however you came across very nervous you could tell in your voice and the way you ride, If you relax a bit more it might help xx
I wasn't really nervous, just surprised as this horse has never done anything like this before. I was definitely extra focussed and ready for him to spook/bronc again, but just thought it was funny by the time he started squealing! 😁 xx

Have you tried looking at if the saddle fits him right? Is he always done this? Was that the first time he has bucked? Just asking because my horse would buck, and we would never know why. Until we found out that the saddle didn’t fit.

you don't have to tell him good boy when he refuses to cross the sticks on the floor or when he bucks

They also aren't sticks there polesjust to clarify and aswell it was sort of comforting to the horse so he knows everything's okay
My horse does just that but not because of the saddle itz because she was a rescue
