That's a great experiment, I'm going to give it a try,but going to use mulch since I planted the fern in south carolina zone.

What zone are you in? I’m right on the 5b/6a line. Wondering if this would work here.

Thanks, it's still growing today in zone 7. It's worth a try. All you need is a big pile of leaves to insulate it from the cold. It got down to -14f for a few days here.

I've never had one make it through the winter unprotected.

But fern may get a fungus or insects...from these leaves... Better u cld take it inside home or kept in a box or someother way but covering with leaves can make plant get fungus
