People, especially largely non-politically active Gen X folks, wanted a meme that was not politically charged and started spreading the Hawk Tuah meme despite it being only kinda funny. Eventually Gen Z latched onto it in a satirical way because of how unfunny it is for the most part and that’s how it really spread.
