  • I gave a presentation at NARCON this year. The video just covers some build and flying techniques that I use for high-power rockets. This is a video for people who fly rockets. The general public won't find it very interesting (only one rocket flight, but it's a good one).

I've just modified my L3 project Extreme Wildman rocket with this main chute recovery method, but with one modification. The piston is attached to the E-Bay with 1/2" Kevlar tubing with a loop sewn in each end and carefully measured so that the piston only comes halfway out. I have 3 1/4" ports drilled in the main chute airframe that are normally covered by the nosecone coupler. And I am now using 2 grams of FFFG Hodgdon Triple Se7en Muzzleloading Propellent instead of black powder because its much cleaner burning and easier to clean from the piston, main chute airframe and E-Bay bulkhead. I've done four ground tests of the main chute ejection and it works perfectly. I'll be hoping to test launch this new L3 rocket on April 22nd but will only have my L3 certification launch after at least one test launch. I'm also planning to modify if with your zipper-less coupler method as well.

Good luck on the flight, Dan! I was able to see the recovery method a little more clearly on an SLI flight last weekend. Watch the pilot chute travel upwards. It''s fun to see.

Awesome info Jim. I learned more in those 42 mins then I learned from hours of reading

A fellow Texan :) and not far from the thriving metropolis of Weimar :) I wasn't sure if TX had any HP rocket people in it. I got into HP rocketry while working here in the 4 Corners (still am). I'm about to start on my L2 rocket. I'm looking forward to watching this.

I make those same huge fillets but I also do tip 2 tip and embed the carbon into the fillet before it sets

That's really interesting, even though I have no interest in doing rocketry myself, it's fun to learn stuff!

I used your filet technique to replace and reinforce the filets on my fiberglass Mad Cow SDX3 after the back of one of the filets had shown cracking, from transonic turbulence of a large K motor. No problems on 3 flights with L1000 motors.
I'm now building an Extreme Wildman for my L3 project and will be using your filets to strengthen. Will be using main chute piston ejection configuration. This will also reduce BP flame damage to chute, deployment bag, shock cord and pilot chute.
Where do you get the thick plywood for your bulkheads? Next Rocket will have long, unbroken fiberglass airframe. Do you have detailed plans anywhere?

Hi Dan . One thing to keep in mind is that the fillet technique is intended to be done in combination with tip-to-tip something. You want a fillet that can be applied and will hold its shape. I could argue that if there was only a fillet to be used, then perhaps a structural epoxy would be better (speculating here, as I have never used a structure epoxy myself). The plywood is nothing special. I think I got a good size piece years ago from the local wood shop and finally used most of it up. I don't have any plans for the air frame method, other than the NARCON video itself. I like to mount a 1" ring in the air frame for the bay to sit on, but there isn't much else to show. Try the deployment method. It really works. Flew yesterday with the same method and it worked well.

@@Jiminaus50 Thanks for your prompt and thorough response.
When I use your filet technique before I use West Systems 101 and mixed 406 Colloidal Silica and the chopped carbon fiber that Wildman Rocketry recommends with a 5/8” radius filet. And furthermore, I added a 2” carbon fiber laminate tape to one of the fins, but after consulting with Steve Shannon, I decided to go forward without adding the cf laminate tape to the other two.
And the proof of the pudding that this worked was that the transonic fin flutter that had been previously threatening to rip off the fins was no longer a problem.
For my L3 certification, I haven’t yet decided whether to add the 2” carbon fiber laminate tape to the fins, but I will be using the large 5/8” or 3/4” radius filets with Colloidal Silica and chopped carbon fiber.
But equally important, I’m planning on using your piston technique for the main chute, and as much of the zipperless technique on the drogue as the Extreme Wildman design will allow without major modifications.
On my next L3 rocket I’m considering using all of techniques you show in your video in addition to your vertical control system.
      Thanks for your video.

I think you'll like those techniques! Good luck on the L3 when the time comes. By the way, at the moment, there aren't any more systems available. It is possible that there may be more in the future, if a replacement control board is produced, but that's out of my hands. I am more optimistic now than a few weeks ago, so we'll see. I'll let you know if there are more in the future.

Jim do you use peel ply on your rockets or tip to tip reinforcement? I've heard it can cause micro fractures.

    • @Jiminaus50
      @Jiminaus50  3 года назад +1

I use peel ply when I want to finish the surface. It gives a flat results. In the past, I have used it on fillets prior to the tip to tip, but I don't do that anymore for the reason mentioned.

No, it was not recorded. I looked at the powerpoint for it. So much has happened since that time. Two flights above 100K (175K and 142K). Major improvements in the stabilization system. Much fun.
