I'm puertorican and i love Kalapana music. I lived in Oahu for ten years when i was stationed there with the Army and Kalapana was my favorite. When hurricane INIKI hit the islands i was moved to Kauai next day for 3 month and loved to help them. Hawaii is my second home and will keep them in my heart forever. Mahalo to all Hawaiians.
Mahalo for your service brahddah. You still hanai for living with us for ten years. I'm transplant at 10 y.o. from Guam personally and have been local for 40 years. Nothing compares to Hawaii.
Kalapana is one of my favorite groups since da '70s. In 1981, I dated a Hawaiian baseball player named Joe DeSa who played for the St.Louis Cardinals (also Chicago White Sox). We'd play Kalapana and "The Hurt" was our song. Joey was killed in a car accident in 1986, then Mackey died in 1999. l cry for both of them... they were filled with such aloha spirit. - Bella-
The bass player is AMAZING, the harmonization is amazing, all together and amazing combination of musical talent, I wish we still had people like this is Hawaii. Times have changed.
Tradegy of Mackey Feary, loved his voice. The whole band at their prime was spectacular. Perfect local jazz band at their prime. Nothing like them since.
Rest In Love, Mackey! This song brought so many of us great joy in our childhoods. Too bad you didnt stick around to share your immense talent some more. What a uniquely beautiful voice you had. I hope you have found peace in the great beyond...
Mackey Feary. He was a master vocalist. His effortless delivery so much vibe and energy. He just turned on the light switch inside the listener. His vocal style unreal fabulous, he had that natural "place" from where he sang from; it was all his own. Ultra memorable, signature sound.
my favorite song THE HURT by kalapana...it was redundantly played in 96.3EasyRock yet i still love listening to the song!it was beautiful!magnificently splendid!
It hurts, but Mackey lives forever in his songs. Listening in 2018 & on. Magical tour down memory lane I drive daily with Mackey. "I'M A SINGA". Love you Mackey (and Kalapana).
I had the pleasure of meeting Kalapana and designing one their concert posters. They are all great people, very warm hearted. Like all the girls back then I was in love with Macky! I miss his voice and the songs of Kalapana. Thank you for bringing back good memories of long ago.
Of all the videos on RUclips, honestly this is probably my all time favorite. Every single time I watch this I get mad chicken skin. All elements were on point, firing on all cylinders. The magic and the magnificent energy is palpable to all who witness this performance
Wonderful video! I saw Mackey the summer before he died. He was playing in a Hilo bar. Just him and a guitar. SO much talent. album is basically their first album and a couple more songs. All of it was great.
Mr.Mackey Feary went way before his time ..his death broke my HEART and how he died he deserved better...may God Bless and keep his Family allways thanks
Mackey boy. A beautiful spirit, God given talents - the voice, the song writer. I grew up in Hawaii Kai in the early 70's. Mackey was not quite 16, no license so he would hitch rides with us to Sandy Beach, the guy was an excellent body surfer. But mele was his thing. I remember, he would listen to a song, "Take Me to The Movies Tonight" comes to mind. He would play it after listening to it a couple of times. Unreal. Many nights of solo jams by Mackey, before Kalapana. So lucky us guys. RIP bro
Thats how Hawaii concert goers were back in the day - polite and stayed in our seats - no dancing and standing up blocking other people’s view. And everyone used to dress up to go concert. Not the same any more.
The best Kalapana song ever! The song was originally a hit in the mid '70s but this video's gotta be from the mid/late '80s judging from the clothes and the hairstyles (mullets lol!). awesome...mahalo! Old School in da house!
Thank you very much, jgirl. Yup! I'm already one of the 2k+ fans of Kalapana on facebook. I've posted two photos there. I just can't get enough of Kalapana and Mackey Feary. Mabuhay, from the Philippines! ... Aloha! ;)
I'm so mental, I never realized this song was by a band from Hawaii. I had heard this loads of times growing up, and when I realized who Kalapana was and that they did this, my mind was blown. So solid. What a groove. I don't want to start a debate between modern Hawaiian music and this, but I totally go with stuff like this any day over a lot of Hawaiian music now.
Mahalo for sharing...a little different recording from the original with Malani's background additions... LOVE IT ! ... We Miss Mackey - Lucky Angels - He's singing in Rock & Roll Heaven !

This song along with Nightbird hit the charts in the Philippines. One of the most played songs in the 70s on Y101, Rhythm of the City, Cebu City.
