Systems developed in garages can only survive as long as there are parents paying for rental of the main house and subsidizing the development of these innovations in that way. If a product can't be commoditized and capitalized by the time inflation overtakes savings of the last gen, the innovation will fail. But if found useful, can be sold to a ready network of earners and spenders with a different set of agendas. Cranks, pedals, chains, wheels, spokes, tires
this notion of "we had a decentralized network" pisses me off a bit. because it's crap. yes, email and usenet were kinda-sorta decentralized in the really really early of their days. but they had no security whatsoever. they could be sniffed and manipulated _at any point_. the real altervatives we have are darknets and other secure-by-design p2p systems, and they weren't very popular at any point in time yet.
Github? 2 million vs 2 billion users? And not everybody can and wants to code... B.t.w. i'm not a fan of social networking either where you have to give up a FREEDOM to be ANONYMOUS..
Jacob seems to want our governments to get involved in funding social media. I'm not holding my breath for that to happen. So the alternative is what... a non-profit company?
So,.. these talks should be shorter (cut up and mashed to nonsense) and just low-brow for the average American? Wouldn't that make every American an idiot for watching it then?
Talking postmodern anarchism with his new sneaks and designer tattoo, philosophical slights of hand by two privileged, highly educated white dudes, signalling their intellectual virtues and flaunting their transnational capitalist lifestyles as partisan heroes of the new age. These large and meaningless theoretical gestures are getting tiresome.

That's quite a rock star shirt Dmytri :)
"Look at me now, mom" hehe
That's not quite what he was asking for though. What's a pay alternative to facebook that doesn't use your privacy as currency.

Funny, I always saw "no perfect end-point utopia" as a small-c conservative ideal...
