I was playing with my phone and checking out different ringtones and found this one. I couldn’t stop playing it over and over, it was just such a happy tune; I started thinking of it as part of the soundtrack for my son’s travails: a little bit of whimsy in the face of a bleak future. I still like playing this over and over again, reminds me of better days.

I turned on sound recognition last Sunday (May 28 2023) and for some reason, set this as my alarm sound for sirens, and all of a sudden when I was out all by myself, sirens were going off like crazy and this ringtone kept playing. Later a huge mushroom cloud casted over me and later I found out that thousands of helpless people had to be evacuated because a forest fire. Those sirens were from forest fires and people who didn’t have a clue what was going on had to leave their homes unsure when they were able to return. This is currently happening in Nova Scotia, Canada and most people are returning but many fires are still out of control. It is a pretty catchy ringtone, ngl, but whenever I hear it now I think of me packing clothes into a bag wondering and fearing when we will have to evacuate our homes. May everybody who had to evacuate be okay and god is with you.

This reminds me of when I was 16 during the summer holidays. I had this as my alarm on Tuesdays and Fridays an hour earlier than my regular alarm. I would wake up earlier than the rest of my family and bike down town to volunteer at a cat rescue. There was an old man, about in his 70s who seemed to have a learning disability who also volunteered those days at the same time as me. I felt slightly uncomfortable around him and he was hard to understand but I remained polite, smiled and engaged in conversation with him as best as I could. One day while I was doing the washing up, he was about to leave and said he wouldn’t be in for a week and would miss me. He asked for a hug, which I found slightly strange, but thought “why not? He’s a sweet lonely old man and thinks of me as his friend. The least I can do is give him a hug.” Although I felt uncomfortable about it, we hugged and he left. Except he forgot his watch and came back. He wanted another hug. After doing it once I felt more comfortable doing it a second time and gave him another hug. Then without saying anything he went in for another hug and suddenly kissed me on the lips instead. I was shocked and turned my head away in surprise. He laughed it off, waved goodbye and left, for real this time. I stood there in shock for a few minutes. Finally I moved to wash my mouth out and then have a panic attack. I biked home that day spitting on the ground every few minutes because I couldn’t get the feeling of his tongue out of my mouth. True to his word, the didn’t see him for a week. I didn’t tell anyone about what happened because I assumed that due to the learning disability I thought he had, he didn’t fully understand social cues or something. I went about my duties as normal. At one point we were both alone in the office where some orphaned young baby kittens were being kept in a playpen so that they could be closely monitored. We gave them cuddles and put them back in the pen. I was about to leave when he suddenly pulled me into his lap. He kissed me again. I was paralysed with fear. He groped and licked my breasts and made me stroke his penis. I thought he was going to rape me but was too scared to move. I closed my eyes and thought “just get it over with and leave me alone. He pushed his penis into my clothed crotch while pulling me close. Then he got dressed again and left, telling me to wear something easy to get off next time. I was disgusted and ashamed. It’s taken some time including several delays due to COVID-19 but I am determined to get justice and stand up for my 16 year old self who was too terrified to say anything nearly 3 years ago. It hurts to hear this ringtone. It was engrained into my brain that this sound means that I’m about to be sexually assaulted or raped. Don’t ask me why I’m forcing myself to listen to it late on a Monday night. I just can’t wait for it to all be over.
