Great info, You're to the point, and accurate in keeping it short and real. Speaking on keeping it real, Can you please let people know that the Music business is not always as lucrative as they think? At one point we had everybody in their mother calling themselves producers/songwriters because they put a beat together. Many are under the perception that that's all it takes to make millions. All though that may be true for some, many don't know about T.L.C and many like them That had deals and even in this digital age How much money did Pharrell make off Happy? ( ''copied from the web ''Pharrell Made Only $2,700 in Songwriter Royalties From 43 Million Plays of "Happy" on Pandora. Dec 23, 2014 ) The money is not consistent, the amount dwindles and it doesn't last forever for most. They see many artists like Marry J. and others going into acting and other businesses to maintain. I as well as many would love to hear your take and realism as you can explain on this matter. You will be a great lawyer. Peace, Blessing & please stay safe.

beegee8789 wrote, “You could have also said that any lyrics or tangible evelidence [evidence], you can just SNAIL MAIL TO YOURSELF [emphasis], like lyrics.”
NO, you’re mistaken! A self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE), aka the “poor man’s copyright,” is NOT a legal resource for US-based creatives to prove their copyright creation, as SASEs can be easily faked/manipulated.
When you mail a creative work in a SASE, all you’re proving is the US Post Office can mail a letter back to you.
And it’s easy to defeat the poor man’s copyright claim: I’ve actually mailed myself an empty SASE by folding the seal into the letter. When needed, I can take any on-line drawing, song lyrics, or photograph and place it into the unsealed envelop, lick it shut, and use the three-year old postmark stamp date as my proof. You can also steam-open a sealed envelope.
I’m recalling Tad Crawford, copyright attorney, stating that in one particular copyright dispute, the defendant’s attorney accused the plaintiff (copyright owner) of tampering with the envelope.
The US Copyright Office (USCO) writes, *“The practice of sending a copy of your own work to yourself is sometimes called a ‘poor man’s copyright.’ There is NO [emphasis added] provision in the copyright law regarding any such type of protection, and it is NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR REGISTRATION [emphasis added].* Source: www.copyright.gov/help/faq/faq-general.html#poorman
US creatives help PROVE their copyright creation by quickly registering their works with the USCO, as that statutorily grants them *“prime-facie” EVIDENCE (presumptive legal PROOF)* of their copyright creation. If the creative work qualifies, the USCO will mail the creative/author a *Certificate of Registration* which will include the “effective date of registration,” aka the official USCO date stamp. See 17 USC § 410 (Registration of claim and issuance of certificate).
*For US works, the poor man’s copyright protection is ineffective + has no legal standing + *is a myth that just won’t die!*

What happens if an American infringer (steals) your music composition and/or sound-recordings?
US and international creatives are encouraged to QUICKLY register their works with the US Copyright Office (USCO), especially if they are listing, selling, licensing, sharing, or further distributing their works on US selling platforms or selling directly to US customers.
If a work is being infringed/exploited in the US, and you want the copyright infringer to pay you money damages, you need to have timely registered your work to have any chance of receiving money damages (and possibly your attorney fees). “Timely” means to register before the infringement begins or registered within three-months of the works first-date of publication.
This easy-to-understand article explains why international creatives need to quickly register their copyrights with the USCO. Just replace the word “companies” with “writers,” “illustrators,” “photographers,” “artists,” “musicians,” and other creatives” to get the point: donahue.com/resources/publications/copyrights-registered-u-s/
Your issued US copyright *“Certificate of Registration”* (that the USCO will mail you) could be used in your and other Berne signatory (international) countries to prove (authenticate) your copyright creation and copyright ownership claims, especially if your country does not have a formal copyright registration system.

If you want to protect your music from copyright infringers, then QUICKLY register them with the US Copyright Office (USCO). By quickly registering your works with the USCO is how you *“presumptively PROVE”* your copyright creation & copyright ownership claims. If your music qualifies, the USCO will mail you your copyright “Certificate of Registration.”

Do Canadian musicians on digital streaming services need to register their works with the U.S. Copyright Office?

    • @cnlicnli
      @cnlicnli 9 месяцев назад +1

LenGreenblat wrote, “Do Canadian musicians on digital streaming services need to register their works with the U.S. Copyright Office?”
Canadians & other international musicians/songwriters SHOULD quickly register their musical works with the US Copyright Office.
Ideally, you should register your music compositions/sound-recordings in *BOTH* Canada & the US, if you have the time and financial resources. If you have to choose one country to register only, I’d go with the US, as it’s the place where your music will mostly likely be infringed/exploited.
If a US-based copyright infringer is exploiting your work without a license, your issued US copyright “Certificate of Registration” (that the US Copyright Office/USCO will mail you) allows you to pursue statutory damages & possibly your attorney fees against the infringer.
As well, by quickly registering your works, both you and US creatives are granted *“prima-facie”* evidence of your copyright validity - in short, you help PROVE your US copyright creation & copyright ownership claims with your issued Certificate.
I’m going to try and post USCO links music/sound-recording links on how to complete your registration. Search for my YT handle in the threads.
      Go Habs!

@@cnlicnli I registered my my music with the Canadian copyright office. I received gov't documentation from them as proof. I also signed with a digital distributor, so all of my music on streaming platforms have a catalogue number and a UPC code for each song. I don't see why this is not enough to prove they are my works. I searched the U.S. copyright website. They require you to list only 10 songs at a time per application. When I registered with the Canadians copyright office, I only have to submit one application for the sum of my entire works, present and future.

@@LenGreenblat wrote, “I registered my my music with the Canadian copyright office. I received gov't documentation from them as proof.
FYI, the CIPO (The Canadian Intellectual Property Office) does NOT vet your copyright claims; they just affix a date stamp when it was received. If you’re in litigation with a Canadian Infringer, only then will a Canadian court examine your musical copyright claims.
On the other hand, the US Copyright Office will ACTUALLY vet/examines your musical works to make sure it fits within the scope of US copyright subject matter. If so, and most all musical works do qualify, you’ll receive a *“Certificate of Registration”* in the mail, granting you *“prima-facie” legal EVIDENCE* of your copyright claim and “copyright validity.*
LenGreenblat wrote, “When I registered with the Canadians copyright office, I only have to submit one application for the sum of my entire works, present and future.:
That doesn’t make any sense. *Do you have a link?* And how much was your filing fee?
LenGreenblat wrote, “I also signed with a digital distributor, so all of my music on streaming platforms have a catalogue number and a UPC code for each song.”
You could have stolen those musical works from a third-party or used AI to create them and then uploaded them with your name.
If a US-based copyright infringer is exploiting your music and you want them to pay you money damages, you’ll need that US Certificate to be able to push them to settle out of court. *This short law article explains why US, Canadian, and international creatives need to "register" their copyrights with the US Copyright Office if they want the infringer to pay them money damages (just replace the word “companies” with “musicians,” “illustrators,” “photographers,” “artists,” etc.):* donahue.com/resources/publications/copyrights-registered-u-s/
LenGreenblat wrote, “I searched the U.S. copyright website. They require you to list only 10 songs at a time per application.”
If your musical works are *UN-published,* you can use the GRUW on-line copyright registration application to register from two to ten UNpublished music compositions AND their corresponding sound-recordings (20 works total) for a total filing fee of US$65. See www.copyright.gov/gruw/
If your musical works are *published* on an album, use the GRAM on-line copyright registration application to register up to 20 compositions OR 20 sound-recordings (and accompanying photographs, liner-notes) for a total filing fee of US$65 (you cannot include published compositions and published sound-recordings in the same GRAM application). See www.copyright.gov/gram/

Hi, my question is do songwriters really need a demo to be completed protected? I can just copyright my lyrics but say for example: if I decide to hire a session singer, giving them a rough recording of me singing ( just so they know the melody) so they can record it, couldn't they say we're gonna steal this melody and just add our own lyrics, and since I've only copyrighted the Lyrics and not the melody I wouldn't have a case?
And in the case with demos (I've never recorded one)
But let's say I want to record one and I use a session singer for the demo, if I haven't recorded or copyrighted the melody how would I convey to them how the melody should go without just trusting they won't steal it?
I hope I explained that ok. But basically just asking is just copying the lyrics sufficient enough?
    Thanks!😊

Once the US Copyright Office (USCO) RECEIVES your completed registration application, your deposited work, and filing fee, and assuming there are no issues with your application or deposit, that’s when your work has been “officially registered,” even though it may take a few weeks to a couple of month or longer to clear your application and mail you your “Certificate of Registration.” The USCO will back-date your Certificate to the date it received all three items.
