Part of my annual (soon to be more regular) visits to the BERA Museum up in Branford CT on 7/16/16. I went up with another New York Transit Museum volunteer, Emil ( / mrrailfanbve , who graciously helped me record these clips of me operating Redbird R17 6688. Check out his channel and give him a sub!
Anyway, we booked four round trips (shorelinetrolley.org/guest-ope...) and split the runs between the two of us; here are my runs. Note that I run through a bit of a learning curve on my first outbound run, figuring out where the points are on the master controller and getting a feel for the full service and minimum application notches on the ME-42A SMEE brake handle. Once I get it, the rest of my runs are as smooth as I can make them. In particular, the second run (inbound) is notable for the fact that due to signal issues, we must stop at every red ball and proceed through under rule 504 (stop and proceed), and the third run (outbound) is notable because, after getting a feel for the brakes, I am able to bring the car into the short beach platform at a relatively high speed, making one brake application and bailing off as necessary in order to come to a stop right at the stop marker.
We do experience voltage / amperage issues throughout the day, making it difficult to wrap up the controller, as putting it in full parallel below 15 MPH results in the car trying to pull too much amperage from the line. Once the amp draw exceeds 175 amps (there's an ammeter in the rear of one of the cabs), the substation automatically cycles, cutting out for a split second, causing the lights to flicker and power to be cut from the motors. Once that happens, you must throw the MC back to coast for a few seconds before moving it back to Series (second point). This problem is exacerbated by the fact that the line voltage is already below 600 VDC (closer to 500-550 near the maintenance barns, and dropping to 400 or so out at the far end of the line). This means that to attain the same rate of acceleration, more current must be drawn (V = IR [for you physics nerds]).
As a general rule of thumb, Switch position (first point) is only to be used in low speed yard moves. Leaving the controller in Switch for too long causes too much current to be fed through the resistor banks, heating them up to a dangerous temperature. In fact the R17s were notorious for resistor grid fires back in the day. So typically, you want to either notch up to Switch for 2 seconds, then proceed to Series, or just like you would on the main line, start off in Series.

Very cool!! Glad the younger generation is learning about and operating SMEEs!!! I got to operate 6688 almost 30 years ago when it was on BERA property only a short time and many times between then and 1991!!! Relax and Enjoy!!!!!

NYC is an interesting area for me as Train Daddy took over as the head of our organisation yesterday.
I echo a lot of other comments - the instructor was well harsh and pushy. Maybe he wanted to demonstrate how strict training is in real life but in London it's not like that (I'm an Instructor Operator on my line so have trainees), the way he was talking would make trainee operators nervous which is not the aim of the game.
When you're paying money and wanting to enjoy yourself there's no need for things to be so strict, you're supposed to be enjoying yourself : )

I have driven the old streetcar #10 at the Shelburne Falls trolley museum but no other real trains as far as I remember.
i hope to go down to Transit as an RCI. my dads and our friend who is a superintendent are helping prep for the future.

lots and lots of politics lol. Big oil has a lot of power here. Additionally, there are a lot of logistical issues with electrification of railroads in a large country with MULTIPLE RR companies each owing thousands of miles of track. They don’t have a speedometer because back in the day, you operated by “feel”, no speedometer. Trains didn’t have speedometers until after the 1995 Williamsburg bridge crash.
@@fh4709 Are you sure? The Kawasaki B-IV Broad Street cars were built in 1983 and they came with speedometers from the factory.

At 1:09 he said "2nd point." They said it was against the rules to go into 2nd point in the yard when I was there about a year ago... I was there a day before you were there last year lol
As long as you only use 2nd point to get to about 4 mph, then its fine. Take 2nd for about a second then notch off back to coast. Remember, you're not supposed to leave it in first for more than 2-3 seconds at a time.

R46-R68A all fall under the SMEE designation. Propulsion is controlled by an electrically driven cam drum sequencer. The NTTs are computer controlled.

+Fan Railer Also, at 2:44, I see you releasing the brakes in steps or notches. Were you just doing that and the brake has smooth transitions, or is the brake notched?
The brake is a continuous range; the only reason I release in notches there is because its coming off of a charge after I dumped the air and sent it to emergency. It's my version of a static brake test.
