  • In part 2 of Jonathan's visit to the Angel Gardens, Kamila and Bogdan Kasperski take us on a fascinating journey through spherical gardens. They have been growing food organically in domes for over five years: vegetables, fruits and herbs. The domes were created in cooperation between Angel Gardens and the Renewable Energy Center from Sulechów as part of the "Innovation Voucher" project. The key construction elements were provided by the Polish company Fdomes, which made, among others: domes for the famous film "The Martian". Kamila and Bogdan are interested not only in the production of healthy food. They are interested in developing new cultivation techniques that will make it easier for them to work in the garden in the future. They are deeply concerned about environmental degradation, which causes climate change and a decline in biodiversity. They use domes to conduct various experiments. They try to learn the best methods of growing food in a rapidly changing world and in weather conditions that threaten crops (increasingly stronger winds, heavy rains, hailstorms, droughts, high or very low temperatures). They are worried about the loss of further species and the decreasing number of pollinating insects. Their decline may have a significant impact on people's ability to grow vegetables and fruits. As part of their experiments, they are creating elements of acoustic equipment for domes that allow them to imitate insects using ambisonic surround sound. Kamila and Bogdan note that, in general, flowering plants they respond strongly and positively to the sounds of insects and the vibrations caused by them. In the domes, they observe tomatoes and peppers exposed to the sounds made by pollinating insects. They also explain how they use spherical domes for cultivation at different times of the year. They present both the advantages and disadvantages of growing vegetables, herbs and fruits in such modern structures. At the same time, they do not sacrifice quality and ecology in their daily work on the farm. There is something for everyone who loves gardening in this wide-ranging discussion of complex issues affecting all food producers, gardeners, farmers, cooks, and homemakers.
In 2010, Bogdan and Kamila Kasperski moved from Warsaw to Budachów in the province. Lubusz Province to live with Kamila's grandmother. The Bytnica commune is one of the least populated in Poland. Over 85% of the commune's area is covered with vast forests. They moved to take care of their aging mother and grandmother. After moving, it turned out that it was very difficult to buy fresh and good food in village shops. You could forget about ecologically certified products. It was also difficult to buy local food straight from farmers. Their dream, but also a life need, was to transform their home garden into a source of healthy food.
Angel Gardens often appear on various television programs and on the Internet. In the Angel Gardens, materials for their programs were shot by, among others, Robert Makłowicz, Maja Popielarska ("Nowa Maja w Ogrodzie", Witold Czuksanow ("A Year in the Garden"), Mikołaj Rey ("Dzień Dobry TVN") and Maria Sikorska ("Z Klimatem and with Passion").
Kamila and Bogdan's annual goal is to grow at least one kilogram of vegetables per family member for every day of the year. They divide their time between working in the garden, processing crops for the pantry, taking care of Kamila's grandmother and running an academy for organic gardening and traditional cooking. They organize shows and workshops for visitors, as well as online courses. They are also socially active in creating gardens for children and protecting wildlife. They inspire people looking for knowledge, experience and ideas for starting a home or community garden.
This is the second in a series of episodes from Angel Gardens. The third episode will focus on homegrown herbs.
