  • Designing a Successful Zero-Energy Building Incentive Program:
In 2015, Gabriela Martin, a long-time pioneer and advocate in the energy efficiency field, set out to design a Zero Energy Building Program for the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation. She contacted PHIUS, among other zero energy certification programs, to explore ways that the PHIUS certification programs could be integrated and help designers to reach the ultimate goal of ZERO energy.
To qualify for financial assistance under the program, projects must attain and maintain site net zero energy building performance or better, and obtain at least one of these certifications: PHIUS+, PHIUS+ Source Net Zero, Full Living Building Challenge, Petal (Energy) Living Building Certification, Zero Energy Living Building Certification. Since its inception, the program has funded several successful Zero Energy projects.
The presentation will walk attendees through the structure and design of the program, and how the PHIUS certification staff collaborated in the process. It will also showcase first completed examples. Monitored data is not yet available but eagerly anticipated, and will be reported at a later time.
    Learning Objectives:
    - Learn about ICECF's requirements for their zero energy incentive program
    - Learn about what project types qualify for the program
    - Learn about how PHIUS+ tools have assisted project teams
    - Learn about the first successfully completed Zero Energy Building projects
    - Describe key energy efficiency strategies for multifamily passive house construction, including a continuous air barrier, managed solar heat gain, and a balanced mechanical system
    - Explain key differences between multifamily and single family passive house design strategies
    - Identify potential building code challenges and possible solutions for passive house design strategies
    - Identify architectural challenges identified and solutions implemented to achieve the Passive House design requirements
