  • Probably too much HP and a used up life span are showing the end of the road for this transmission. 8v71TA N75 injectors are not helping this transmission that is rated under 300 input hp max. Shear forces and gear wear are ending its life.

I use to work for an Allison dealer and rebuilder called RTS here in Florida and got to swap a couple of those V-drive units. To my understanding its one of the few places that will even rebuild those anymore. Loved working on those beautiful old buses though. Way easier than newer buses short of metro buses with the B400s. Those things were a 2 1/2 hour job start to finish lol

As a newbie would be nice to have a few wide angle shots of the transmission to to fix in my mind a frame of reference of were on the transmission your working in. Good video.

Somebody turned it way up and didn't do any transmission maintenance.

It's not about the the level of transmission maintenance. The issue is the V730 wasn't designed to handle that much horsepower from the modified 8V-71 on that coach.

Finding good hi temp bolts can be problematic these days depending on who makes them. They can be over done and have weak spots

I agree. Not many choices with a V-drive, so when I get myself a Fishbowl, I would do a T-drive conversion with a 6V92TA and an HT-754. BTW, can those V730/731s be rebuilt to handle the higher horse power with hardened bevel gears?

Besides being over powered, would the wear on the pinion gear also be caused by incorrect backlash ?.

So, question: I have a V-730 with an 8V71 with N65 injectors in my 4106. I thought the original motor configuration was 318 bhp and slightly more with the N65 injectors. Would that be correct and is it too much power? What is recommended?

318 is the n65 hp. A V730 is designed for 262 net HP and 815 ft lbs net torque input. Minus your hp loss to alternator, fan, ps pump, air compressor and other accessories gets you much closer to the max net input to the trans. That’s just a the book number there is some leeway. Over 350hp you really see issues.

@@BusGreaseMonkey Thanks for the Response and explanation. I love your videos. I had one V730 get torn up similar to the one in your video. The bevel gear had a whole tooth missing from it and a completely disintegrated main bearing (or at least that'w what they showed me at the shop). Somehow, it got us back 1000 miles from Nova Scotia to Maryland. Had it rebuilt by Johnson and Towers for $8k! Hope it doesn't happen again. Wish I had my 4-speed back!

You need to call Detroit Diesel to find out what size Allison transmission is needed for the horsepower rating you have, you might also look at the injectors to make sure that no one has upped the power rating of the injectors.Ex-bus mechanic Trailways Bus Company 1978-1990

That’s the only auto trans available for a gm V drive. And yes it’s rated for much less hp

What sort of horsepower are the V730 transmissions rated for. I ran across a 62' GM 4106 that has a Cummins 903 engine retrofitted to the bus. My understanding is the 903 Cummins that's currently powering the bus is putting out around 600 HP?.
