Jon... "I'm not so familiar with aviation technology in the 19th century"... I'm not surprised! It mainly consisted of jumping off a tall building with feathers glued to your arms. Wright Brothers' first flight was 1903.
Before reading your username I never actually thought about what Many A True Nerd was named for. Very good :)
Haha oh god what if its true and thats why we never see Jon in any videos
Supernintendo Chalmers ....but you see Jon in his very first video..
Reign That was just swamp gas.
MATN isSpokenUndressed what about zeppelins and lighter-than-air travel? They were already invented but quite slow and prone to fire.
Jon, small spoiler warning:
In the 1800's, there were these wonderful thing called Steam Boats. With them, and with the help of sails to boot, you could, yes, go over the Pacific Ocean!
Marvelous is it not?
I'm guessing they were quite slow, though...
Many A True Nerd 12miles is the maximum for a steam boat if I'm correct
Actually, the Great Eastern (built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel in 1858 (well, some other chaps _helped_ I guess)) managed to get up to about 30 km/ph before it exploded!
Ross James ok
Well, I stand corrected. But this book is set in an alternative universe, so there's that.
This game is set in like a steampunkish Victorian era, so it'll definitely be up Jon's alley. My favorite route is to cheat and cross the North Pole into America. Every separate route has a story, and all of them are fantastic. Exactly what I think the natural progression of the Choose Your Own Adventure games should be.
@@komradekradles8731 yes
Is that cheating? 4 years later I tried it and died a few days before the North Pole.
@@johnmartinez7440 no, you just really need to keep Foggs health up during the day or asking members for help
Ah! I remember this game!
In my first run, I almost thought I was going to be 1 day late but miraculously I found a boat that took me from Iceland to London in a day. I arrived there in the evening with a huge debt and with Influenza but I think it was worth it. I mean... I'm pretty sure Fogg didn't want anything else to do with me after that (probably because of the cash issue... and that time I ended up almost marrying an Indian woman) but... At least, uh... Yeah, I can't think of anything.
Anyways, you're going to enjoy this game Jon. Don't forget to comb Fogg's hair at every given oportunity!
I froze to death in Antarctica once. That was unpleasant.
Should've tended to Fogg more often. Why would you even go to the south pole in the first place?
I had to send 16 grand to speed up a car to leave that day from Gibraltar to Lisbon just so I would arrive in London on time
I remember that boat! Best thing that ever happened to me. Unlike that airship from Ceylon to Singapore.
I kicked a robber off of an American train and fled from the gustapo in Russia. Also tried to start a mutiny in the Pacific.
I loved Around The World In 80 Days, one of the best books I have ever read.
Full series needs to happen.
If you fail this run, Jon, I doubt any here would blame you for trying again.
Taolan8472 Suggesting there's a chance he wouldn't do a second run
Good god I love this game. In my first ever go I was still in Australia after fannying around enjoying the journey when I realised I only had about 20 days left... I ended up finishing with 4 hours to spare. It was glorious for me AND my neighbours.
32:24 Bersaglieri are an Elite Italian Infantry type that originated ever since the times of the Kingdom of Sardinia-Piedmont
Sardinia-Piedmont were not able to afford proper cavalry so they made regiments called "Bersaglieri" as light infantry that serves most of the purposes of cavalry
They are noted for their special fast jog especially compared to other military units in Parades
I just finished my first play through in 79 days and 45 bucks left on the bank! A real nail biter.
I went through the most tortuous rout. I left europe through istanbul, crossed the arabic desert by camel, took a ship to india. From there to australia through singapure (Where, by the way, there was a mutiny in my airship, a gun went off and we found ourselves submerged before being rescued). From there to new zealand (where we went down again, this time in a hot air ballon). We went to peru and then panama. I wanted to go through brazil, but there wasn't enough time, I reckoned. There we made a very expensive trip to haiti and then to DC. After getting to NY, I was almost out of time and funds. The trip straight to london was too expensive, so we left all the luggage behind and took a ballistic missile to iceland and from there took an air ship to london. I only got home in time because I bribed the capitain to leave early.
Oh, man, the last leg was really tense. In the end the journey was almost 30k miles. To think that If I spent £45 ponds more anywhere around the journey I wouldn't have made in time... unbelievable.
I keep unconciously inverting the colours and wondering since when there were so many island places in the middle of the ocean
listening to jon's stories and commentary makes any game delightful.
Waiting for the market to gave me flashbacks to Rivet City.
I thought the Altimeter was to answer questions and to some extent predict the future...
Yay to more of this sort of thing!
I had a strange delight from hearing Jon so happy over this. Gave it a much more real feel.
A lovely game to rather honest
I always liked going to the North Pole in this, that and the trip on the hovercraft thingy from Yokohama
Ten seconds in and the Earth is revolving the wrong way.
NEEEEEEEEEERD
Richard Urwin
And not spinning correctly.
watch the video through a mirror or maybe your looking at the world upside down in fact whats is up or down in universe fucks me man or maybe your Japanese and read a book back to front then its revolving the right way.... what if the world was inside out??? HOLY FUCK
Calm yourself Jackson.
Yes, Jon, he's one of the True Nerd...., srsly tho, it is rotating the wrong way
My boyfriend introduced me to your channel through your fallout yolo series and I enjoyed it thoroughly! Yet it wasnt until i watched this and your Ryse: Son of Rome playthroughs that I figured out what's gotten me hooked. It's all your experiences! As an American who has never set foot outside of the United States, I fascinates me how much history can be explored in Europe and its surrounding countries and to hear you recall all this information with such joy, its truly infectious! Keep being amazing and I look forward to more content from here on!
Around the World in Eighty days is my all-time favourite novel so I wish to help you in your journey: From London you go to Paris and then on to Brindisi; through the Suez canal to Bombay; Bombay to Calcutta; Calcutta to Hong Kong; Hong Kong to Yokohama, Japan; Yokohama to San Francisco; San Francisco to New York; and finally New York back to London. You're welcome :)
Fun fact: until very, very recently, there were no female gondoliers in Venice. One or two women acted as private gondoliers, but none held a public license until 2010. There really wasn't much in the way of sexism there, either: the various physical tests are so physically demanding that most women are physically incapable of passing them (biological difference in upper body strength and all that). That's not to say sexism was completely absent; there was still a lot of controversy over the few women that tried.
Now, there's one: Giorgia Boscolo, who took the gondolier assessment by storm and became the first woman to hold an official, public license.
My sister actually met her father while she was in Europe, which is how I know about it (although if you just Google her name, all kinds of stuff pops up). Probably one of the most interesting conversations she's ever had.
I enjoyed this playthrough so much I had to stop halfway through to go and buy the game! On my third playthrough now, after completing in in 45 days (Trans-Siberian railway) and then dying at the North Pole.
Logic of jon: learns a dead language, roesnt learn about cars and science
Doesn't*
Beastly Form Look at it this way, if enough people learn it. it won't be dead 😀
Still useless outside of pretentiery
Or religion............ and demon exorcisms, but I doubt that John wold become a hunter...... or a priest.
Aaron Sikes Or a Priest that hunts
I used to listen to this when I was a kid, so this is quite the nostalgia blast. I love it! :,)
I'm having just as much fun learning of your own travels and exploits IRL as I am watching you play. Consider me intrigued!
Your personal stories as this plays on adds a lot more than other playthroughs of this that I've seen.
I love 80 Days, just a fantastic game.
Really enjoyed this, I think your play style is really suited to this due to the little narrative pieces throughout, and as others have said, it's nice having you share your own experiences of these different places as you go. Looking forward to seeing more of this!
Hooray! Always a pleasure seeing a video from you in my inbox, Jon.
I remember my first time playing this game. The writing is amazing. I hope you enjoyed this game
I remember my tricks for this game... all I can say on my best one is, after Paris, keep north, as north as north gets that early on, but remain prepared for an abrupt papal detour.
Yay! Jon has finally pronounced a Welsh word properly. First step was Aberystwyth, next step is to work on pronouncing Prydwen properly
I just finished the game. I managed to finish in 69 days
Being part Greek, I can confirm that ouzo is in fact still delightful even in my thirties.
I'd assume that the routes shown are those of previous players who have already finished.
"I'm not so familiar with aviation technology of the late 19th century." Well, as I recall, the Wright brothers first flew in 1902, so it's probably not too great.
the game, and I think the book, take place in an alternate reality. In it, technology such as cool aeroplanes and submarines is developed much earlier, and women gain the same rights as men much earlier as well!
it literally takes place in a different universe
You pronounced Passepartout right.
I played this on Mobile. Great game.
As a Turkish person i cracked up so bad at 24:47 . Just talking about Turkey and Antalya comes up "that's not useful". I know you didn't know but it's still funny to me 😅
There is a distinct lack of Jackie Chan in this.
Is game is soooooo cool, I just got it and I have done 2 runs already, first run i got stuck in the Amazon after my wonderfully fast ship was hijacked, the thing is I spent all my money on that ship and with no banks what was I to do?
You sound like a well travelled fellow, Jon. I've not gone further afield than western Germany
This is fabulous, hope it does well enough for a full series
Try to go to Agra. You'll be surprised that the city itself can move. Like that's amazing
its crazy how u can play so many games at once Jon.. to a pretty high standard .. even if your not a seasoned player in a game u still usually pull through and put on a good show.. hats off to you and if i was a lady pants off to you
and i got bored after 5 minutes
“Did he just go to space? I think he did” Yes amazing 19th century maneurisms
Happened upon this video today and I’m happy to report this game and this play through are both still delightful.
this game is a gem. I played it last year, so underrated!
Might just have to pick this up.
Looking forward to seeing more. =)
I got it not long ago, it is pretty good
I watched around the world in 80 days just before Christmas it was a wonderful musical this was interesting seeing another take on the story
(Is going through Italy as a dapper English gentleman) This game is sort of a... *Grand Tour*, wouldn't you say?
I feel you need a steamer's pause button in this game, where you pause the game to explain all the various options possible. You spend minutes discussing what you could do instead of what you're going to do, and miss the opportunity.
Streamer's curse, that is. Aaarrrr.
I ended up with over 10 thousand near the end but in a huge time crunch, ending day 70 near the bottom of the west coast of America, but was able to miraculously find an airship in New York that would take me to London within 2 days, which was exactly what I needed! (For the small price of 14000 dollars!) It was pretty exhilarating!
Please more this is really interesting
holy tangents Batman!
I love this game. It is actually extremely fun and has a lot of content.
Hey john, you should buy parts of sets (i.e. Desert traveler, gentleman traveler, etc) to make journeys easier where those boosts would help.
Guess you could say.....80 00 leagues ABOVE the sea.
OMG!!!! This is like my favorite game on iPad... I would play this games for hours on end! This is great that one of my favorite RUclipsrs is playing this!!
I was thinking about getting it on iOS, is it any good?
Maximus TV ye
A bush from the Island of Borneo I really enjoy it on iOS because it is nice just being in a restaurant or in the car and being able to just play it even if it's for only a few minutes.
I know you will not read this comment but for those who read, Around the world in 80 Days was actually a chapter in my english book but this game don't quietly match that
What?
I've had this on my Steam wishlist for years now. Don't wanna watch too much to spoil it but I might have to go pick it up finally -- when it's on sale
Hi Jon, Thanks for making great videos!
Notbob :3
We played this at school for enrichment.
Not sure if this is an English education expression. If you don't mind, what does "enrichment" mean your educational setting. Grateful for the response.
IM IN ABERYSTWYTH JON! you made my day
Looking forward to more 80 days, this is quite excellent
I'm happy jon said Aberstwyth is important at the the beginning since thats where I attend Uni
Jon its time for a skyrim series(like you promised) don't bottle it like the assassin's creed 2 series
Jack Webb He said it *might* happen after Mass Effect 2.
lets also not forget the Fallout New Vegas Kill Everything return for the DLC's
Ahahaha. I love it. This is where Jon's Dilly-dallying bites him on the arse repeatedly.
Reign I learned early on that you have to seize opportunities for long journeys as soon as they come up
Where's "our" Astroneer gameplay?????
you said paspartout pretty good (i read the whole book, its great) but THX FOR AN OTHER GREAT VIDEO
It would be pronounced Pass-é-partou as Claire will tell you. The middle e isn't silent
Just checked with Claire - she reckons my pronuciation is correct. FOR ONCE I'M NOT WRONG.
*gasp*
Many A True Nerd i thought that was how you pronounce it...... I guess I may know a little less than a person that actually has french as their native language
Its official Jon can French! He can communicate with the French better than Boris Johnson can, even if Jon can't speak French perfectly
Goten Fan1 Jup, Jon was indeed correct, you would've been correct if there was an accent on the "e", like you wrote it (as "é"). :-) But in this case it is an "e muet" (or simply "silent e") :-) Great pronunciation Jon! Cheers from Belgium :D
Speaking of incredibly British games Jon, have you ever heard of one called Her Majesty's SPIFFING? It's a point and click adventure game that came out recently which is one of the most British gaming experiences I've ever had, it's pretty funny!
I think that's one of the problems you run into Jon , you miss things by talking a good video , But I realise this is in fact the way you play these types of games and I like watching you make those type of mistakes and seeing how you handle the consequences.
A gay couple in the Edwardian Era test the strength of their relationship by taking a three month whirlwind global holiday.
39:22 represents my love for Jon
I really dont think any game i have played fits the vibe of 1800s steampunk adventure like 80 days.
For sure my dude
Yeah Berlin has the river spree but there isn't and wasn't ever something like a big water transport on it. And if I think about Berlin I've a lot on my mind but not herring!
I'm loving it
berlin is on the rhine river which is massive which is the reason for the harbour
Jon, you're trying to cross the go around the world, not making money.
Agree
Yes, Jon, it is very nice music. Probably. I can't hear it over the sound of you rambling on about how good the music is.
I grabbed a bowl of popcorn. I had to.
Right, just started the video, and got a bit confused by the world map. I thought the land was water because it was blue. Thought I was looking at the bottom right part of some random country.
this music sounds quite familiar...like final fantasy
By the way, Berlin got a habor but no great ones. In the past Berlin was all about trade over the rivers wich flows around and trough berlin beacause it all was swampland.
Jon tell us more of your adventures
85 quid for a train ticket in 1872?!?
It's an alternate reality
7 days from London to Munich...
I saw Jules Verne and clicked on it
This is a lovely game.
You should try the sorcery! apps. They're from the same developer, i believe.
Puff Your right. I'm currently on the fourth part of the Sorcery! series.
ZAP
around the world in 46 minutes
Jon, please make this a series
I really loved this game.
I went on an expedition to antarctica and ended up dying with my gay lover.
Loved it Jon, very neat game and good fun to watch you play it. Pip Pip!
at the start...the city in ''central europe''
it was ''Bern''
capitol of switzerland
Please do more!
this is my brothers favorite game
when he said Munich to nice i died
how is this so stressful, i have to stop to relive stress
The most British game except it is based off of the book by the France man
