It was a great car. I had one and it was fast and very reliable, stable at high speeds in narrow and twisting roads and bad weather. Not nearly as fun as the pre-GM. We still keep a 91 900 turbo bought new, and it’s so much fun to drive. But the post GM 900 and the 9-3 were extremely capable cars.

I love the NG900 and the classic 900 as well. I had a 1995 900S, 5 speed 2 door and currently have a 1996, 5 speed SE turbo convertible. It's a blast to drive. Thanks for doing this video and sharing.

The convertible models were a huge success for Saab. I do think the NG900 is underrated but on the whole if you can find a good one they are an excellent modern classic. Thanks for watching

Just discovered this and your 30th anniversary video. Outstanding. I'm on my 2nd NG900 - a red 97 2.0L convertible. The one that hooked me was a black 1995 900S. Underbelly rust consumed it. Cheers!

Even if the base chassis is "same" Saab actually modified almost everything....reason why 9-5 was nail into coffin when it was announced and developed.
But in case of 900NG, similar parts are here:
Floorpan, bulkhead, steering, brake parts(not all), and some suspension parts.
Rest is Saab 😊, yes you can crossfit fee other parts but anyway...
It's like comparing Saab 9000 vs Fiat croma
And Lancia Thema, they share same parts, allthough Saabs floor is hugely thicker and better material what was used on "Italo wonders"
Brgds from Finland, owned 23 Saabs by far, now only few ones left, 2.1 900 turbo, 900NG 2.0 and 9-5 aero Hirsch.

    Mine was M712DGT.
Black, beige interior, it was also a 900 SE 2.0T coupe. It didn't have the climate control but it did have sunroof and 3 spoke steering wheel. I always thought the coupes had 3 spoke steering wheel until I saw this video.
Saab did a fantastic job turning a turd of a chassis into something as good as this car.

I have the exact same model here in Massachusetts. Only difference- driver on the left. Mine is a 1998, black with a sunroof and 278,000 miles on the clock. Unfortunately lots of rust due to the experience of 26 New England winters. But engine and gearbox are as strong as ever- never had to service either in any major way. The rear wheel arches are a notorious weak point as damp gets trapped between the 2 layers of steel. I'm hoping to get to 300k and then I think we'll be done.

I had a brand new black ‘98 9-3 Coupe and I thought it was pretty good looking (except for the rear end) and fairly well made. However, I hated that the steering column shook on startup (poor scuttle rigidity that led to eventual MoT failures) and ride and handling were fairly poor as the chassis was, of course, based on the Opel Vectra / Vauxhall Cavalier floor pan.

    • @tjshill82

I used to own a M-reg 900SE, black, 3dr and it had beige leather interior. It didn't have the climate control but did have a sunroof. Interesting, I wonder why your coupe has a 4-spoke steering wheel? I thought all coupes had 3-spoke steering wheel.

these were OK(ish) but drove poorly compared to a 'real' 900. The bulkhead mounted steering rack didn't help matters..Really you'd only buy one were individuality was a priority - or the straight line turbo rush..Something lke an e36 3 series or even a mondeo was streets ahead as a driving experience...

    • @tjshill82
      @tjshill82  Год назад +1

Yes you are right. I’ve owned 2 E36 328i coupes. In 1994 the under pinnings off the NG were already a good few years old and mounting a steering rack on the bulk head is a very old school method. Mondeos are great cars but incredibly dull in comparison with only the 2.5 V6 worth a look
