That's a tough answer to give, I'm pretty sure this may vary a lot internationally. They always say put sketches or hobbies when applying to university (masters) but I don’t sketch buildings it’s more of fashion illustration would it be a wise decision to include it under hobbies and skills ?
I believe when it comes to sketches or hobbies on a portfolio, it's always about showing a bit more of you and what you like. Extra skills, hobbies, or interests that add value to your portfolio. Any type of work really! From creative skills to more technical interests.
what size do you recommend for a digital portfolio? I initially did it in A3 so it could be printed but thinking it will be viewed digitally anyways so might as well use a digital format and avoid the black sides :)
There's no unique answer here. But thinking about filling the whole screen, you might want to choose a format that once it's opened as a spread, it occupies that 16:9 aspect ratio. Hey Marc! To design and create your portfolio we recommend Adobe InDesign. There`s a new course on our website that just launched and teaches you everything you need to know about it. I’m looking for ideas to go into a portfolio for a masters in architecture for students without an undergrad architecture degree. It’s a masters that’s a bit longer to get you caught up on design knowledges; therefore, I don’t have all these digital buildings under my belt like I see in all your samples. I’m going to the school hopefully to learn all that. I have a lot of art work and some floor plans. What do you suggest.
This is an excellent question actually. I am myself redoing my portfolio without an undergrad architecture degree to apply for a Master one; though I am an interior designer, have an architecture background and worked almost 2 years as an apprentice in an architecture firm, I still have some questions and apprehensions on how to process so I hope they will see your comment and make a special video for this particular matter!
what software do you recommend to create your portfolio? I'm thinking to create some sheets using photoshop and then create a pdf file to apploud it on Issuu. any recommendations?
That's a really personal answer, there's not just one answer. But if I had to take a wild guess and try to aim for the average, I'd say around 20 to 25 hours total? Idk, this just depends on too many variables to be honest. Maybe other people can comment here with how many hours they took to redesign their portfolios.

I've been wondering, most of the architects out there are using vray rendering engine , but I'm more comfortable with blender , is there any adventages that vray has over blender? Thank you ....
The biggest advantage would be that Vray can be used in software like Sketchup. And Sketchup is much more "architecture friendly" than Blender. Meaning that you can actually design and preview volumes in Skp, whereas in a more technical software like Blender you're there only to visualize and that's it.

For sure! Any type of image or drawing should go in a portfolio if that’s your strength. However from my point of view it shouldn’t be the only type of drawing. Especially if you’re applying for a masters, you need to show that you’re a full fledged architect. But also as we mentioned on the video, there are various types of masters, so curating your portfolio towards that application process will increase your chances of getting approved. Maybe looking at portfolios from people who got in before you. I hope that gives you some clarity!

The portfolios are uploaded to the website ISSUU, and they are in PDF format. I've added all the links in the video description if you'd like to check them out
Why would any reasonable person go for m.arch. its useless. Its just your bachelors its no different. Try getting an msc. A master of science in energy in buildings or urban planning. Or construction engineering or structural engineering I suggest energy in buildings. It has nothing to do with architecture. Its all heat transfer and fluid mechanics. Your job opportunities will increase. Right now in my country building energy analysts are paid twice as much as an architect. Plus we get to work in government institutions. And the energy and petroleum sector. They employ us as consultants and solution makers and people that just calculate. In simple terms imagine mechanical engineering and enviromental engineering had a kid. It would be that. The world doesnt need more artists. It needs people that are good at math. Hard math. Fluid dynamics. Heat transfer... etc related to mechanical engineering.
You certainly got a point! But maybe that's not the path everyone is willing to take. And also in some countries getting a master's is mandatory if you want to become a full-fledged architect, otherwise, you end up being an architectural assistant or architectural designer.
OK, here is the problem. People only look at the aesthetics of a project. Do these Universities only teach the design and how it looks? is that it? Would an employer or company only hire someone from these portfolios because of the layout and font selection? If one of those is going to earn someone a PHD, a Doctorate, in architecture then I think it is a gimmick. I don't care if any of you get offended, it isn't meant to offend but the truth often offends. Architecture should encapsulate the geography and the materials and their sourcing and logistics and the efficiency of the structure and how it impacts the surrounding community and business. Not just some nice looking, often useless excuse for art, waste of time resources and funding for someone's ego to put their name into the world. I am glad I didn't waste my time at an educational facility and pay them to teach me to limit myself to produce anything like this. But yes some of them have a very nice and neat layout and are very well presented but if I was reviewing Architecture portfolios I would say these are all lacking a lot of information and details and more like a coffee table pass the time pretty pictures book. I would not take any of those seriously.
Agreed. Architecture isn’t just art. It has to prioritize usability and structure. The artistic properties should lie within these two, not above them.
Correction: there are no master's in achitecture because it cant be measured. So called masters are usually use in martial arts or painting because you can measure it.
I really liked your videos and actually thought the links you shared would actually lead me to buy templates of the shown brochure designs...and I also thought that if I buy the package I would support those architects for their nice design work...Long story short: TURNS OUT I ONLY SUPPORTED YOU TWO FREE RIDING TRICKSTERS that are selling a skinny remake. Seriously, IF you use their talent and hard work for getting more clicks and then also monetize them even more by selling a self-made template package that is directly linked in your videos - be transparent about it or at least actually try to reach the quality of the televised brochures. I'm sure I'm not the first who falls for your scheme and I won't be the last. I'm sure you know exactly what you are doing, shame
Hey there! First of all, all the portfolios shown on the Portfolio Review series are from people who submitted their work to be featured on the videos. We’re not taking advantage of them in any way. It’s a mutual agreement. They get featured here on the channel and we get interesting and real portfolio to talk about. And although we would love to dive deeper into each portfolio and give a more in-depth analysis here, unfortunately it’s not possible due to the format constraint of RUclips. Second, these videos have no intention of selling anything at the end. It’s free content that we’re creating to share here on RUclips. You also are not forced to contribute with anything but your time. Sorry if you feel that way about the videos, it was never our intention to deceive anyone. And if you check the other comments (from this video and other of the Portfolio Review series) you’ll see that people like it and are eager to see more of this type of content produced. Also, the only portfolio templates that are being sold are from Show It Better. Which are not even linked on this video description. And what often happens is that people purchase them, use them incorrectly (a straight copy) and then submit their portfolio to be reviewed. And lastly, to add one more comment, our main focus has always been providing as much valuable FREE content here on youtube. If you’re interested in what we produce, you can enjoy it without paying anything for it. The courses and other resources are for those who want to support what we do here and learn in a more personalized and in depth way. But never with the intent of holding back information behind paid walls. Again, sorry you misunderstood our purpose and work here.

your examples of bad ones look like something my friend would do lmao it's as if he did it
now we need video lasagna review soon😂
“Testing Steven’s Recipe. Does he cooks as good as he designs? - Lasagna Review” 😂😂😂
