If you're looking for a good reference book on detailing, I really like this one: thirtybyforty.com/constructing-architecture/ And don't neglect hand sketching (my best tips): ruclips.net/video/eNNAnSCrrBI/видео.html
30X40 Design Workshop Great topic and it's something related to what I'm working on at the moment. Do you think if you were moved to, or things happen and you decided to move to UK, Malaysia or Australia, (or any country where metric system is applied), can you get head around using metric system. Because it is a problem for me to understand imperial system, btw I'm from Aussie.
30X40 Design Workshop dude I’ve been the last 23 years of my life trying to find my passion and you helped me... I’m loving the architecture just because of the way you show it, just keep it up and thanks for every video.
Hi , could you make a video on how to do a perfect presentable plan, the technical aspect, all the lines needed(section/elevation/void...etc) 3:30. Thank you
I'm a design student from Nigeria, I really enjoy how you take us through the design process step by step! Your videos have been of immense help to me in so many ways. Keep up the great work!
As a former frame carpenter with a 2 year drafting and design degree, plus 25+ years as a commercial superintendent, I'm a fan of your videos. (When I have time to watch). I appreciate the amount of coherent information that you fit into a short video timeline, without a lot of fluff. Bringing any project to fruition is a complex balancing act , having to juggle the constant flow of budget, deadline, scheduling, satisfying client wishes/concerns, adhering to code, timely procurement of materials, etc. After viewing a finished project, I'm sure that for the most part, people are unaware of what is required to "get to paint". Great videos. Appreciate the effort.
Details are what makes or breaks something. Even the untrained eye will most times feel something is off somewhere, where the detailing has not been resolved. You sir showed a beautiful process of achieving a wonderful result. My favourite I have to say is the chimney viewed from the outside. That was very nice and perhaps unexpected touch. Thank you for sharing and looking forward to more of your tips!
Draw details by sequencing. I used to think that drawing details had to be complicated. I learned from this video that detail drawings can be and should be kept as simple as possible. Thank you, Eric for another awesome video!
You're the man - love that you create these incredibly informative videos. They're a great resource to educate both architects and clients. Also, gorgeous project!
Thank you so much for this video. I am a recently graduate Architrctural Technologist and eventhough I had 6months of internship and 9 months of part time job(mostly in project proposal phase) I feel directionless. Watching your videos helps me see which areas of construction and Architecture I really would like to work with. Thank you.
I found this super interesting. I liked the fact that you emphasised that a detail it’s not only about what it looks like but how it’s assembled. Once, my supervisor sent a ceiling detail drawing to construction and they called us after a while to tell us that it was pretty, but impossible to put together, as there was no space for the technicians hand in such a small gap 😂 these things happen and we need to remember it! I’d love to see more of this! You explain things better and simpler than many of my architecture teachers did at college! Keep it up... I admire your work and dedication!
As always great content. I like the 1 sheet = 40 hours graphic you posted. I worked for an architect that used to say, "A sheet per week." That was before computers but I think it still applies. Thanks again.
About to undertake my post grad masters degree in architecture and it excites me to see architects doing so well and producing such lovely work. The fire place looks magnificent but kudos to you Eric for designing such a house that pays tribute to its locality and does not impose on its context. I think to me that is a far more impressive feat and looking at the photographs, it appears to be a large home.
I enjoy your process. I hope there are more detail type videos to come; everything in the process from how did we get here to how to show this to the trades. This is GREAT! Thanks for sharing.
I love watching you videos, they are so humble and inspiring, much like the architecture projects. I'm an architecture student and at time I doubt myself, thinking if I'm in the right career path(usually when I hear others speak of how difficult and boring it get after school, with little pay). I always turn to your videos to get my passive back and reminds me how much I love it. Thank you! keep inspiring!
you make it sound like detailing is the most fun to do in Architecture - but yes def agree with this, lots of consideration form authorities approval to what the clients wants, extremely challenging where you can learn a lot!
I enjoy detailing and doing R&D work a lot, was my previous job actually. That chimney clamshell is an excellent example of a design element that can be very challenging to create. That firepit stone was totally awesome! Another great video!!
This was exceptionally helpful. I really loved this video Eric. It was great to see alot of what we're taught in school put to action in this So well thaught out way. Made perfect sense. It's amazing to see you make design seem almost effortless and remain with it's passion. The house is gorgeous.
Thank You Eric, this was very good to see. A quick refreshment on my - long gone - university studies. I which I spent more time on this subject. I did enjoy detailing in the office when I had an engineer and a good sales agent close by. Now trying to figure details out without them - I am just starting with my first project on board, without the first salary......A lot more challenging. So thanks for every drop of information. Cheers.
Wow, I like this! Not just the details - but the creative architectural design, forget that. Let's call it what it is - ART. Thanks for sharing some of your creative work in a training format.
Thank you for the video. You touched some what on the principles of detailing. but things I will come here looking for, as a young architect, are more applicable circumstances of detailing and building science. Things that I can carry over into the work I'm doing. Modern ways of putting a building together. I appreciate your videos that teach me about new materials that I could be using. Things with practical application. I appreciate this video though, and thanks for what you're doing.
Absolutely loved this particular video, Eric!! :) It's always great to see different approaches to problem solving ( and in details). I can say i learned a lot today:) You're awesome!
Dude! That´s awsome! Keep vids like theese comming. Detailing is something that´s super complex, and needs loads of practice before one actually feels comfortable making drawings at that scale. Cheers from sweden!
I just found your channel and this was the first video I’ve watched. Needless to say I’m hooked and look forward to binge watching your content. I am planning to purchase land and build a house. With that comes an array of ideas and learning how you process every detail is very helpful. Thank you for taking the time to show the intricacies of your craft.
This is so helpful, especially when this is not taught in the uni and during the third year you’re suddenly asked to produce construction detailed drawings for projects orz (however I found this after my deadlines....
Hello Eric i really enjoyed this video. I am interior designer. I hope to find a good interior designer in youtube who will show those details like you about interior spaces. For architecture you are the best so far.
now we are talking, this kind of videos are welcomed! waiting for more of them, and you should aim for a complete set of videos kind of tutorials as a playlist on this channel thank you my sensei
I have a love/hate relationship with details, especially staircases. I love "designing" them but can get easily frustrated when it comes to the detail drawings. I love the fire pit, despite the "grounded" boulder. I think everyone loves a good ellipse...
Much respect for this video. I've always seen your previous videos and thought they focused on rudimentary ideas, but this is a fabulous walkthrough of a well thought out design detail. Excellent video and excellent explanation.
Wonderful as always. I am an architect from Bangladesh and been practicing for the last 3 years. It would be great if you make a series or at least a video on Interior project detailing. That would be great. Thanks again.
More details in the future man!!! Good to see thoughtful and spherical approach at the desk. It really helps in the field for an ironworker/welder/artist that's minding the gap
Watching your videos makes me want to grab my art supplies and start designing! Maybe a video on how do you addministrate your time both in proffesional life and back in uni Greetings and love from México
I really enjoy your video, I teach landscape technology and I have a hard time showing the poetics of detail and why in need so many scales and sections. Thank you.
Yes Eric! This was so useful it gave me an idea of what's a design of something small and what kind of drawings we need to use and so.... thanks for this amazing job
Wow! This video was so helpful for an architecture student like me who's about to get into detailing classes this semester( a fresh 2nd year student in this September ). You just opened up my eyes on how things are done in a detailed level. Any advice that you got for me to know & understand more about detail DWG's? I appreciate if i get any feedbacks on my question. Ps: i'll definitely pay to be a member of your channel after I settle some stuffs. Have a good day and God bless you Eric. Cheers!🤘🏽
You've surely finished your course by now, how did you like drafting. Was it as interesting as you originally though- or as interesting as this video makes it seem? Do you still watch videos like this? You think your skills are as god as Eric's, haha let us know!
Aloha from Moreland Design in Mokuleia Oahu... I appreciate the design build approach to this detail in particular 👌 we go about our details very similar.. keep up the good work!
love the boulder firepit and the way you explained your thought process for sequence and even laying it down on a sheet. Shame it wasn't floating but it still looks beautiful regardless 😊
Could you do a video based on precedents? How should we approach it and learn from it to inform our own designs? Thank you I’ve started watching u I had a bad year in architecture 1st year after watching you I’ve been motivated and learnt my mistakes in my project I THANK YOU 30x40 KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!
I really enjoyed this video. Detailing is what makes Architecture possible. I understood that only after working in the field. There should be more emphasis on detailing in Architecture studies.
very nice video and wonderful idea with the boulder. Perhaps you could show more images of the finished product in context. Chimney on outside looks great, but IMO on the inside it looks very overpowering, but I understand that there`s like noway around it!

I would be interested in this as well.

Small monthly fee ?
Yes, I would love to see a set of plans you have produced as a reference for what I want to achieve. It's amazing seeing what you have accomplished.
grateful to you for sharing such an awesome video with us...🙏😊
Could you do a video on drafting? Like how to use parallel bar with triangles, tips, and stuff like that.
wait...are people still using parallel bars?
30X40 Design Workshop Sadly my school does :( Not sure if it’s a first year thing but we have to draw a bunch and not use a computer
tons of value in hand drawing for sure (esp. sketching)...wasn't aware that maylines were still a thing that's all!
@@30by40 yeah my school does
I just completed my first year and we had two drawing courses (freehand and using a parallel bar). It's only first year though. I enjoyed it too.
